Hackett will be participating in Reading Together, the yearly community-wide read sponsored by the Kalamazoo Public Library. This year there are 2 book options:

The American Way of Eating: Undercover at Walmart, Apple-bee’s, Farm Fields and the Dinner Table by Tracie McMillan

“McMillan went undercover in three jobs that feed America, liv-ing and eating off her wages in each. Reporting from California fields, a Walmart produce aisle outside of Detroit (and Kalama-zoo!), and the kitchen of a New York City Applebee’s, McMillan examines the reality of our country’s food industry in this “clear and essential” (The Boston Globe) work of reportage. Chroni-cling her own experience and that of the Mexican garlic crews, Midwestern produce managers, and Caribbean line cooks with whom she works, McMillan goes beyond the food on her plate

to explore the national priorities that put it there.”

Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer by Novella Carpenter

“Urban and rural collide in this wry, inspiring memoir of a woman who turned a va-cant lot in downtown Oakland into a thriving farm. Farm City is an unforgettably charming memoir, full of hilarious moments, fascinating farmers’ tips, and a great deal of heart. It is also a moving meditation on urban life versus the natural world and what we have given up to live the way we do.”

All members of the Hackett community are invited to participate in two reading discussions in the school media center. Thursday, March 13, 2014 - 2:35 - 3:15 PMWednesday, March 26, 2014 – 7:00 – 8:00 PM

The authors will be speaking at Kalamazoo Central Auditorium. Tracie McMillan is scheduled for March 5, 2014 at 7:00 PM, and Novella Carpenter will be here on April 15, 2014 at 7:00 PM . For more information on related activities, please consult the Kalamazoo Public Library’s website - www.kpl.gov.

2014 Advanced Placement Exams

The Advanced Placement (AP) Ex-ams will be given at Hackett begin-ning Monday, May 5, and will continue through Thursday, May 15, 2014. AP Exams are required for all students who are currently enrolled in an AP course. Students with documented learning dis-abilities who have regularly used accom-modations in school should contact Mrs. Smith, ASAP, if they would like to apply for accommodations for AP Exams. Doc-umentation must be up to date (within the last three years for either an initial diag-nosis or a reconfirmed diagnosis) and all past and current documentation must be on file in our office.

2014 Michigan Merit Examination (MME)

Attention Junior Students and Parents - All juniors will be testing the three day MME, Tuesday, March 4 through Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Fr. Bart Memorial Hall located at St. Mary’s Church. Letters will be going home to all junior parents with more information.

Please contact the Guidance Department if you have any questions regarding ei-ther of these tests.

Junior College VisitsNow is a good time for juniors to plan vis-its to their prospective colleges. Hackett allows three absences for this purpose during their second semester; these are treated as school-related business. It‘s best to call ahead and schedule a meet-ing with the admissions office. While students are wise to start their college search on-line, visiting a college may be key when deciding if a particular school is the right fit for you. A typical visit includes a tour of campus, attending a class, speaking with an admissions officer, and meeting with an athletic coach. When

choosing a college, you should con-sider: academic curriculum, admission policy, cost, opportunity for financial aid, location, size of enrollment, reputation in a specific field, and affiliation (such as private, public, religious, etc.).

FAFSA/College Financial AidSenior Parents: It is time to com-plete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for your senior. The form, which is the center of most grants, loans, scholarships and other need-based financial aid, is available on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov Students planning to attend college or postsecondary training during the 2014-2015 academic school years should complete the online FAFSA by March 1. You should also be aware of your individual college deadlines for financial aid, which may be earlier. Check with the Financial Aid Office at your particu-lar college. All applications are proc-essed online.

ScholarshipsAs scholarship opportunities are re-ceived, they are posted to the HCC Daily Announcements, on Mondays only, by the Guidance Department. While a majority of these opportunities are directed toward seniors, we occa-sionally post scholarships which are available to underclassmen. Please be aware of scholarship scams. Do not pay anything to anyone to search for scholarships. Juniors and seniors: we have listed some of the more popular scholarship web sites which are avail-able to you in the Hackett College Plan-ner that you were given at Junior Parent Night.

Seniors: All local Kalamazoo Com-munity Foundation Scholarship appli-cations may be found online. www.ka-lfound.org (Most of their deadlines are by March 31. Apply now!)

Testing is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, at 8:00 A.M. Stu-dents should arrive at 7:40 A.M. and bring several #2 pencils as well as a calculator with extra batteries.

Sign–ups have already begun and will continue through February 7, 2014. The cost is $20.00 during this period. Students will need to sign-up in advance. No drop ins are allowed this year! Your child will be considered registered upon receipt of your check, made pay-able to Hackett Catholic Central.

Midyear, Seventh Semester Grade Reports

Seniors: Many college admissions offices require midyear, seventh semester transcript grade reports. If you need a transcript sent, please stop by the Guidance Office and re-quest this from Mrs. Byrne.

EFE/EFASophomores and juniors: 2014-2015 Education for the Arts and Education for Employment ap-plications, are available in the Guidance Office. Completed ap-plications are to be turned-in to Mrs. Byrne, but are processed by the school district you reside in, by March 1, 2013. Please contact Mrs. Byrne if you have questions.
