Bishops’ Award Recipient~Mark and Karen Weishaar~

Established in honor of the past and current Bishops of the Diocese of Kalamazoo without whose lead-ership and vision Hackett Catholic Central would not be in existence, the Bishops’ Award is presented each year to members of the HCC community who have embodied the spirit of volunteerism and car-ing. Since their arrival in Kalama-zoo in the 1990s, Karen and Mark Weishaar have worked diligently to promote and support Catholic edu-cation and causes in Kalamazoo and are the deserving 2013 recipi-ents of this distinguished award.

Mark’s many roles in support of Catholic education include school board president of both St. Augus-tine and Hackett Catholic Central, finance chair for Hackett, and co-founder of Project Hope at St. Au-

gustine. He was also a member of the Blue Ribbon Committee and served on committees to renovate the HCC gymnasium and the foot-ball field. Mark’s volunteer stints extended to coaching as well—for St. Augustine and Hackett basket-ball teams. He continues to serve HCC today as a member of the Bannister Fund committee.

Thank You.....

A huge thank you to all who helped make the Shamrock Auction a huge success. We appreciate all the hard work by so many people. Thank you so much.

Office HoursMay 27th - Memorial DayNo School - Office Closed

There are many traditions at Hackett Catholic Cen-tral, but one that has continued to gather our friends, parents and supporters in droves for more than 25 years is the Hackett Catholic Central HS Shamrock Auction. The event was held on March 16 in Hack-ett’s gym to celebrate “all things Irish” and impact the mission and students of our school.

With nearly 300 attendees, the evening was a re-sounding success. Guests enjoyed different food stations and delectable desserts while bidding on over 200 silent auction items. The live auction then featured four premier tickets to a sold-out Justin Bieber concert in Chicago, tickets to the NCAA bas-ketball tournament, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Bulls/Pistons games as well as two passes to the 2014 Masters practice round—and much more. Through the incredible generosity of sponsors, do-nors and patrons, the 2013 Shamrock Auction net-ted over $80,000 and proved to be one of our most significant yet.

Auction proceeds will be used to support our athlet-ic programs and fund needed upgrades throughout the building. As it has for so many years, the 2013 Shamrock Auction brought together HCC supporters and friends for a night of fun and fundraising. Many, many thanks go to co-chairs Barb Nitchman and Dei-dre Smith and their tremendous team of volunteers who made the event such a success.

Middle: Molly Ryan, Grace Smith, and Katie Balaguer take a break to pose for a picture.

Bottom: Fr. James Adams with Dan O’Brien, Joe Amat, Brian Aldrich and Conor Gillig, all volunteers at the auction.

-SENIORS - COLLEGE ADMISSION

DECISIONS

After you receive your college admission office decisions, you must notify each college or uni-versity who accepted you wheth-er you are accepting or declining their offer. You should make these notifications as soon as you have made a final decision as to which college you plan to attend, but no later than May 1. (It is un-derstood that May 1 will be the postmark date.) Confirm your in-tention to enroll and, if required, submit your enrollment deposit to only one college or university. An exception to this arises if you have been put on a deferred/wait list by a college or university and are later admitted to that insti-tution. You may then accept that offer and send a deposit. How-ever, you must immediately no-tify the college or university at which you previously indicated you would enroll that you will now not be attending. (Not all college enrollment deposits are refund-able.) When you make your final decision, inform the guidance of-fice so that your, required, final transcript may be sent to the ap-propriate college/university ad-mission office.

Work a Thon On Friday April 26, 2013, Msgr. Hackett Catholic Central will con-tinue our efforts to provide service and assistance to the Kalamazoo community. The entire Hackett stu-dent body will go directly to many local agencies in our 2nd Annual Work-a-thon. Depending on the loca¬tion, students may be doing grounds clean-up, sorting or stock-ing items, book binding, clean-ing, sewing, and a variety of other things. We will be working with many of our local parishes, Catho-lic Family Services, and many other community agencies. Rain or shine; the day will proceed as planned.

Students will be assigned to vari-ous locations around the city of Kalama¬zoo. From 7:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., students will work in various capacities to support their assigned location. Students will then return to Hackett for our cus-tomary picnic lunch of hot dogs on the grill (or veggie subs), pop, chips, vegetables, and dessert. Students will then be released for the remainder of the day.

We are in the process of finaliz-ing locations and student/faculty assign¬ments and will release those when they are complete. One of the agencies that we will be sup-porting is the “Bronson volunteers”. We are seeking a few parents with some sewing ability and also seek-ing donations of fleece and satin in order to craft pillowcases and “snugglies” for newborns.

If you have any questions please contact Pat Byrne, Service Coor-dinator or Tim Eastman, Principal at Hackett (296) 381-2646. Thank you very much for your continued support. We are looking forward to a great day.

New/Used Book Sale News

Once again this year, we will be collecting used books on the last days of school. Listed below are some important dates and pricing informa-tion:We will collect used books on the following dates:

May 23, 2013 Seniors June 7, 2013 Underclassmen

Please use the following procedures for preparing used books for re-sale:

1) Check the list of “Books Not to Buy Used” for the 2013-134school year. Any books on this list should not be turned in for resale, but you may donate them back to school for recycling. Each student will re-ceive this list when I go around to the classrooms in May.

2) Place a piece of masking tape on the outside cover of each book you will be selling. On this, legibly write your student’s name, and selling price of the book.

3) I will be going into various classrooms to help students with preparing books for resale. We will give each student a personalized carbon form to list the books (and their prices) that they will be turn-ing in. This form must be used to turn in their books. Please help your student in preparing this form and pricing their books. NOTE: When filling in the original form, they should list the name of the book, not the subject the book is for.

There will be a 15% service and handling fee for each book sold. There-fore, if you ask $50 for a book, you will receive $42.50.

To help control costs, the LAC has determined that price controls should be put in place for used text books. A chart with prices will be distributed to students when I go to the classrooms. I will use Amazon and e-bay as guides to determine what the books are selling for online .The goal is to provide guidance for resale prices and control costs.

The combined new/used book sale will be on Saturday, August 10. Times will be posted at a later date. We will need lots of volunteers to work at the sale in August. If you are interested, please call Linda Pickornik at 381-2646 ext. 108. Parents who help with the sale and/or collection of books will have the opportunity to purchase their books at an earlier date.

·Combination locks purchased here orig-inally can be used year after year. Have your student tuck their lock away in a safe place and use it again next year.·The 2013-14 book list with prices will be available in the office the week of the book sale.·You can use credits earned at your church or elementary school for new or used books purchased at the Hackett book store.·There will be no refunds for used books purchased and only in the event of a schedule change for new books. New books can only be returned in perfect condition!·Used books that are left after the August 10th sale will still be available the next week. This is a nice option for those that are not able to make it here on the booksale day.·Since we will continue to have the re-maining used books available for sale, we will not issue checks for used books sold until the first week in October.

“Books Not to Buy Used”

A list of the “Books Not to Buy Used” will be given to the students when I go around to the classrooms. All work-books and lab books cannot be turned in to sell because the students write in them. Make sure the books you are buying privately from friends will be used in the 2013-2014 school year.

If you have any questions, please call Linda Pickornik at 381-2646 ext.108. I will try to help in any way I can with your questions.

Call Linda Pickornik at 381-2646 ext. 108 if you would like to

work the book sale.

Lowie van Staveren

A teacher and coach at HCC for 11 years, Lowie van Staveren’s impressive tenure included 14 regional championships and 19 KVA titles. He led 36 All-State athletes, coached seven teams that placed top 12 in the state and was nominated for Michigan Coach of the year five times. Lowie’s girls’ Cross Country team earned second place at the MHSAA Finals in 1996, and, during one of his highlight seasons in 1997, the girls’ Cross Country team won the state championship, was named Academic All-State and Lowie earned MITCA State Coach of the Year. He worked with the commit-tee that raised funds and built the first track at Hackett. Coach van Staveren’s influ-ence on HCC students went beyond athletics. He was involved with the Haiti project, traveling as a school representative five times, and was honored as the Southwest Michigan Diocesan Teacher of the Year.

Caitlin Bowman

Caitlin Bowman is the most decorated goalie in HCC Soccer history and perhaps the most decorated player. Her athletic talents also extended to the basketball court. A three-time All-Conference basketball player, Caitlin was named to the Honorable Men-tion All-State basketball team and honored as a Third Team All-State Student Athlete as well. From the beginning of her freshman year, Caitlin was the starting goalie on the Irish Soccer team. A four-time All-KVA athlete, she was also All-District, All-Region and First Team All-State four consecutive years. As a senior, Caitlin was selected as a member of the All-State Dream Team, was the HCC B’Nai Brith honoree and won the Rita Hane-Long Award. Caitlin took her talents to Albion College where she was named All-MIAA four years in a row and was twice named the team MVP. During her tenure at Albion, Caitlin’s team won two conference championships, and she was even honored as an outstanding player in the MIAA one year.

Arianne Christine Field

Arianne Field’s accomplishments in Cross Country and Track at HCC are numerous: She captured two KVA and two regional championships in Cross Country, and was an All-State performer both her junior and senior years, placing sixth and seventh at the MHSAA Finals respectively. She boasted 4 All-State performances in Track and earned two KVA and regional championship titles. Field was named MVP in Track two times. Arianne continued on to compete at the University of Michigan where her teams captured a collective nine Big Ten Championships in Cross Country and Track (indoor and outdoor seasons) and she earned the team captain spot. In 2007 the Wolverines placed as high as third during the outdoor championships. Arianne was also an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, placing 10th nation-ally in 2006. She continues to pursue competition and has completed marathons, placing third in the 2008 New York City Marathon.
