HABITATS

A HABITAT A habitat is a place where living things live: animals, plants, fungi, humans, microorganisms…

LIVING THINGS LIVE

A habitat provides

FOOD, WATER,

SPACE

and SHELTER

to all the living things.

DESERT

Page 6: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

CLIMATE

In the desert it is very HOT during the day. (40°-50°)

And really COLD at night. (-5°)

Page 7: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

The soil is very SANDY and sometimes there are sandstorms.

Deserts are very DRY because it rains very little.

Page 8: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Not many plants or animals live here.

Plants and animals have adapted to survive with little water.

Most of desert animals get their water from the food they eat.

Page 9: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

WHAT ANIMALS LIVE IN THE DESERT?

Scorpions, spiders, camels, dromedaries, lizards, snakes...

Page 10: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Many animals sleep during the day, because it is too hot, and are active at night.

They come out at night to eat

Page 11: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Many plants have thick leaves in the desert to retain water.

There are a lot of kind of cacti.

Page 12: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

THE TUNDRA

Page 13: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

CLIMATE

It is very cold and windy. It is freezing. (-30°C in winter 5°C in summer)

It rains very little.

Page 14: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There is snow and iceon the ground most of the year.

It is hard for plants to grow in the tundra.

There are no trees. Only a few plants grow in the summer.

Page 15: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There are six months of daylight

and six months of darkness

Page 16: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Animals have thick white fur to protect them from the cold and to camouflage.

The grassland

Page 23: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Glasslands are areas where the vegetation is

dominated by grasses and

some flowers that grow

among the

grasses.

Page 24: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Climate

Temperate grasslands have warm and humid summers (±15°C) and cool and dry winters (±5°C).

THE SAVANNAH

Page 28: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

CLIMATE

It is quite hot during the day

and warm at night.

It rains very little

and it only rains in the summer.

SUMMER

Page 29: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There are only two seasons in the savannah:

there is a wet summer and a dry winter.

It is difficult for animals

to find water in winter.

Page 30: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There are few trees and the plants are mainly grasses.

The Forest

Page 35: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

CLIMATE

In a forest it is warm and cool in summer (±15°C)

And cold in winter (±5°C)

Page 36: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Forests are large areas rich in vegetation, especially tall trees and grass.

Page 37: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There are different types of evergreen and deciduous trees, bushes and grasses.

Forest Plants

Fir tree

Pine tree

Maple tree

Bush and grasses

Page 38: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

When autumn arrives the leaves turn redred, orangeorange and yellowyellow.

Once winter comes the trees lose their leaves.

Page 39: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

In the forest there are different ANIMALS:Foxes, mice, owls, birds, rabbits, snails, bears…

Forest animals

Page 40: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There are a lot of mushrooms in the forest.

Mushrooms absorb nutrients from dead matter.

Fungi

Page 41: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

RAINFORESTS or JUNGLES

Page 42: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

CLIMATE They are very wet because it rains almost every day.

They are very warm (about 20-30°C)

Page 43: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

They have very dense vegetation : very tall trees and many plants on the ground.

Page 44: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Many types of trees, flowers, vines, carnivorous plants, lianas, and very tall trees live here.

OCEANS AND SEAS

Page 49: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Oceans and seas are saltwater habitats.

They cover about 70% of the Earth´s surface.

Page 50: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Dolphin, whales, seals…

Many fish and some mammals live here.

Page 51: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Jellyfish

Starfish

Anemones

Zooplankton

RIVERS

Page 56: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Rivers are streams of running water flowing towards an ocean, a lake or another river.

Page 57: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

A lake is a body of water that is surrounded by land. There are millions of lakes in the word.

The most important rivers in Spain

Page 58: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

There are thousands of rivers throughout the world.

The most important rivers are:Amazon River (The largest)

Page 59: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Nile River (The longest: 6,516 kilometers long)

Page 60: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Mississippi River (The largest in North America)

Page 61: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Many animals live in and around the rivers and lakes.

The river banks are habitats for mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects.

Page 62: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

PONDS

Page 63: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

A pond is a small area of fresh water.

It doesn’t have moving water.

Page 64: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

In a pond some animals live in the water (fish, crayfish, tadpoles, etc.), some live above the water (ducks, insects, etc.), and others live in the area surrounding the pond (raccoons, earthworms, etc.).

Page 65: Habitats. 4ºPrimaria

Fish, frogs , turtles , birds , dragonflies and mosquitoes.

The most common animals in and near the pond are:
