Building Homes, Building Community

Why rent when you can own an affordable, GREEN Habitat-NYC home?

We build attractive, quality homes that hardworking, low-income New Yorkers can afford.

Build pride and a sense of community while keeping your hard-earned dollars in your pocket.

Our program is unique. Our homeowner families:• Help build their homes with professionals and volunteers;• Get free classes in financial literacy, building maintenance and more.• Receive an affordable 2%, 30-year fixed mortgage;• Contribute a cash down-payment of just 1% (compare to the standard 20%);• Enjoy property-tax abatements;• Live in a healthy, green, well-built, energy-efficient home.

Here’s How You Can Qualify:• Must earn between 50% - 80% of the city’s area median income;*• Have good credit (a FICO score of 620 or higher);• Be willing to contribute “sweat equity” to help build your home;• Must be a first-time homeowner.

Become a Habitat-NYC Homeowner

For a quarter of a century, Habitat for Humanity - New York City has been transforming lives and the city itself—one of the most diverse places on Earth—by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of decent, affordable housing.

Founded in 1984 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat-NYC works in all five boroughs of New York City, building quality homes for ownership by hardworking families and individuals in need.

We build the homes with the “sweat equity” of our family partner homeowners, who work side-by-side with volunteers. Each year, thousands of New Yorkers from corporations, faith institutions, schools and civic groups come to build with us and learn more about how to help solve New York’s affordable housing crisis

A safe, secure home can make an immense differ-ence to a struggling family. Compared with renters of the same age, income and race, homeowners in the United States are:

• 12 times wealthier;• 15% more likely to vote;• 16% more likely to belong to school or community organizations;• 28% more likely to repair or improve their homes.

Children of homeowners are:

• 25% more likely to graduate from high school;• 116% more likely to graduate from college;• 59% more likely to own their own home within 10 years of leaving their parents’ household;• 20% less likely to become teenage mothers.

What a Decent Home Can Mean to a Family

In addition to building homes, Habitat-NYC is a leading advocate for affordable housing. Our goal is to ensure that every New Yorker has a decent, affordable home, by creating a social movement to end the housing crisis plaguing New York City and by calling on elected officials to make affordable housing a priority.

Additionally, our Loan Rangers campaign seeks to educate low-income New Yorkers about predatory lending practices and helps them to make wise financial decisions.
