Color

The table below has been developed over 10 years to help students master the color palette of Hawaiʻi. Colors can be oil, acrylic, oil pastel, watercolor or gouache. BOLD colors you will need.

This course is focussed on making water-based paintings on location. That means we will focus on using watercolor - pan or tube - as well as gouache and acrylic if you wish. Students who are wishing to learn about watercolor, but already have kits that are oil or other media are welcome to join.

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Prepare supports for water-based media painting. 2. Select brushes for appropriate media - watercolor, gouache, acrylic - for washes, highlights and details. 3. Mix colors with correct media - water, retarders, extenders - to achieve flow and saturation. 4. Use drawing materials - watercolor pencils, pens, inks - to create structure and composition. 5. Demonstrate a complete understanding of starting, working and finishing a painting in one session.
