With the beginning of each year, we renew our goals and commitment to ensuring the success for all of our students. One of our continued goals is ensuring that our students are safe on campus. One new security measure you may have noticed is that we are closing the gates to the campus during the school day. With this new measure, we know that you will support us by remembering to sign in in the office to visit the classrooms. All volunteers on campus need to acquire a yellow visitor sticker in the office. Many adults on campus may know you, but many of our students may not. At the end of the day the gates will be opened for students to be picked up. Please remember to remain in the patio area and meet your child there. Please refrain from going into the wings, or even into your child’s classroom to look for your child. Often times students are released from classes a few minutes after the bell rings. This is usually because of last minute unfinished business in the classroom, and is not a common occurrence. If your child has an appointment, please come into the office and request that they be dismissed a few minutes early. The office will call the classroom for early dismissals if necessary. Another continued goal is instilling the love of reading in each child. Please make sure you encourage your child to find ways to read at home. Borrow books from the library or your classroom teacher, or find magazines that interest your child. Reading is the foundation for all other subject areas so please help support us with this goal. Time is flying by this year with February marking the halfway point for the school year. It is time to reenergize our efforts and strengthen our Snow Community’s commitment to student achievement. The ways in which we can strengthen this commitment are through our home and school connections and increasing parental involvement. Report cards will be distributed in early March and will record the progress each child has made up towards master of grade level standards. This might be a good time to make a connection with the classroom teacher to continue to find ways to support your child towards mastery of those standards. Research has shown that the stronger the relationship with the teacher and parent, the more successful the child will be. Stop by the classroom, make an appointment with the teacher, or send an email. Keeping an open dialogue with the teacher will help to give you insight on how to best support or challenge your child towards academic success. Research has also shown a correlation between parental involvement and the success of a school. Whether you have an hour to come work in the classroom, help with Movie Night, or work on a project at home for your child’s classroom, ever opportunity is valuable to your student’s success. Take some time over the next few weeks to find one way in which you can support your child by being involved at the school. Don’t forget to bring in your passport and get a stamp. The more stamps earned, the more prizes your child will receive, but more importantly, the more your child will see the importance of his or her education. One great way to stay connected and be involved is to join us for our Family Bingo Night on Feb. 1 st . We will have a fun family night full of laughter and dancing. Come enjoy a nice spaghetti dinner and get to know your child’s friends. We will have raffles for some exciting prizes like tickets to Great America, winning a new bike, and much more. Join us and earn a free homework pass! To help support our goal of loving to read, bring in a new children’s book and receive a second homework pass. Sincerely, Robin Sehrt, Principal

January’s Value of the Month

Tolerance

Rights have been an important part of history since the ratification of the Constitution in 1789. The denial of civil rights because of race, gender, or religion reflects a larger intolerance of difference. Intolerance is also at the heart of much bullying behavior, and we encourage students to contemplate the importance of rights and the role of tolerance in making sure that everyone has access to their rights. The principles behind creating rights to ensure fair treatment apply not only to history, but also to the school.

Remember the world would be a boring place if everyone was the same!

A good place to start practicing tolerance is in your classroom. How can everyone be treated fairly and safely?

What is tolerance?

Tolerance is respecting others, not matter what they look like or what they believe.

Tolerance means you do not have to agree with others, but you accept that everyone is different.

Accepting each family and person can decide what to believe in and what to think

A tolerant student:

Accepts diversity

Accepts others have a right to be who they are

Does not prejudge others on the basis of religion, race or gender

Gets along better with other people You are being tolerant when you:

Seek cooperative solutions to conflicts

Focus more on our common humanity that on our differences

Understand and learn from our differences

Accept we can learn from our differences and have fun together

Do not criticize others

Do not discriminate other people who have difference abilities from yours

World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor

— it requires only that they live together with mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement.”

February’s Value of the Month Honesty

Honesty

What is honesty?

Honesty is telling the truth. Honesty is straightforward conduct. Honesty is being sincere, truthful, trustworthy, honorable, fair, genuine, and loyal

with integrity.

Honest, trusting kids:

Tell the truth despite consequences Voice their opinion in a kind, thoughtful way "Tell on" someone only when necessary Show and share their feelings Know their classmates and teachers care and want the best for them Feel and react without guilt Express themselves positively as well as critically

You are being honest when you...

Do your own homework Tell a friend the truth Explain the real reason you didn't turn in your homework Keep your eyes on your own paper Clean up your room after making a promise Give the cashier the extra money she gave you by mistake Write a report in your own words instead of copying Admit you made the mistake Keep a friend's secret Turn in a wallet full of money that you found Thank someone in your family for being honest.

8 great reasons to tell the truth

1. Telling the truth lets everyone know what really happened. There's less chances of misunderstandings, confusion, or conflict.

2. Telling the truth protects innocent people from being blamed or punished. 3. Telling the truth allows everyone to learn from what happened. 4. You usually get into less trouble for telling the truth than for lying (and getting

caught). 5. Other people trust you more when you tell the truth. 6. You don't have to tell more lies to keep your story straight. 7. You gain a reputation for being truthful - a trait that most people value. 8. Telling the truth helps you feel secure and peaceful inside.

SECOND CHANCE BREAKFAST

We have a new program called Second Chance Breakfast. Any student interested in buying breakfast at recess will be able to go into the cafeteria and receive one. Students who have free or reduced lunch are allowed one breakfast and one lunch a day so they may not have a breakfast, second chance breakfast and lunch.

PASSPORT to SUCCESS Parents, bring your Passport to Success with you when you attend our school events or volunteer at school. Each time you attend an event, your child will receive a stamp. Your child will be rewarded monthly if he/she has one stamp in his/her passport book. At the end of the year, those parents with 12 volunteering stamps in their child’s/children’s passport pages will receive special recognition in June at the Passport Celebration and Awards Celebration.

DAILY ABSENCE VERIFICATION Calling in your child’s daily absences is very, very important. The office phone number is 510-818-3900. This number has voicemail so a message can be left at any time day or night. Absences should be called in each day as soon as possible but no later than 9:45 a.m. When doing so, please leave the following information:

Please say your child’s name clearly. Spelling the first and last name is very helpful. Teacher’s name and room number. Reason for the absence, i.e.: illness, dental or doctor appointment, out of town, etc. Please leave a call back number for any questions the office may have.

It is a parent’s responsibility to do this with each absence. The office will make phone calls each day to clear absences but it is most helpful if parent’s helped us by calling first! Snow School appreciates all our parents very much!

RECYCLING/COMPOST PROGRAM

Last year we started a successful food scrap recycling (compost) program. In order to continue this program, we are looking for volunteers to supervise the food recycling by the upper grade students during their lunchtime (12:20-1:00). Please contact us if you are interested in helping with this valuable program!

6580 Mirabeau Drive * Newark, CA 94560 * (510) 818-3900

COMPUTER INK/TONER RECYCLING We are recycling empty inkjet, laser, fax, and copier cartridges. Every penny counts and helps! If you have empty cartridges and wish to donate them to Snow School, please send them to the office. Thank you!

PARENTS ON CAMPUS

All parents/visitors/volunteers are required to check in to the office. If you need to pick up your child for an appointment, come in to the office to sign out your child. The officer will then call your child’s teacher to have your child sent to the office. If you know ahead of time that your child is to be released during the day, please send a note to the teacher so that your child will be ready to come to the office when the office calls the class. If you need to drop off your child’s lunch, homework, etc., please come to the office. The office will be sure your child receives his/her lunch, homework, etc.

Enero / Febrero 2013

Escuela Primaria H.A. Snow Boletín del Oso Polar

Robin Sehrt, Directora

Esquina de la Directora Estimadas Familias de Snow,

¡Feliz 2013!
