H.265 replaces 16×16 pixel macroblocks, with coding tree units (CTUs) which can use larger block structures of up to 64x64 samples and can better sub-partition the picture into variable sized structures.

H.265 initially divides the picture into CTUs which can be 64×64, 32×32, or 16×16 with a larger pixel block size usually increasing the coding efficiency.

H.265 allows predicted blocks to be coded in different block sizes. Each top level coding unit (or CTU) is first coded as a prediction quad-tree, where at each depth the encoder decides whether to encode with merge/skip, inter, or intra coding. The residual from those predictions is then coded with a second quad-tree which can optionally have greater depth than the prediction quad-tree. For instance, this allows the residual error from a 32×32 inter coded coding unit (CU) to be represented by a mixture of 16×16, 8×8, and 4×4 transforms.

- More compression is not the same as “different method of encoding” as the first compromise the quality if the video as the other is made not maintain the same video quality at a lower bitrate

- You can record H.265 and Live can be H.264 (Our cameras can send both H.264 and H.265 at the same time)

This is beneficial for integrating with 3rd party systems that don’t (yet) support H.264, allowing installation of the best camera and migrating to H.265 once VMS support is provided.

What is WiseStream?

Wisestream is an intelligent codec for H.265 and H.264 to lower bandwidth and storage needs.

WiseStream works automatically based on the scene and adjusts as needed.

WiseStream 1.0 Reduces Bitrate using the following Methods, and allows independent configuration and enablement as needed by:

1. Identifying motion areas of the scene and providing higher compression to background areas while retaining high quality for motion zones. This happens automatically and dynamically. WiseStream provides a setting of high, medium, and low for the relative quality desired. Configured globally as needed.

2. Dynamically adjusting the GOV (I-Frame Interval) which is the biggest frame size depending on the scene, amount of motion present and network activity. Configured per profile as needed.

When motion occurs, it immediately inserts an I-Frame, and then continues at the normal GOV interval.

This drastically reduces bandwidth, as I-Frames are bandwidth intensive.
