Advanced Bridge Analysis and Design Methods Simplified Andrew Gallagher B.Eng CPEng RPEQ, Novex Services Pty Ltd Barry Skinner B.Sc C Eng M.I.C.E, Bestech Systems Limited SYNOPSIS Advanced bridge analysis and design methods have been simplified with the aid of modern bridge software. This paper provides a summary of these new analysis and design methods and the advantages that can be achieved. Topics covered include automated vehicle load pattern generation methods to the new Australian Bridge Code (AS5100) and the New Zealand Transit Manual, recent developments in composite analysis methods for bridges, and the integration of analysis and design procedures. Automated loading methods use influence surfaces which are a powerful tool for generating vehicle load patterns in accordance with the provisions of the various bridge codes. Complex load patterns can be generated to a high level of accuracy for any desired load effect in both two dimensional and three dimensional bridge models using the influence surface method. The theoretical background and application of this method are presented. Composite analysis methods have recently been developed such that advanced 3D models incorporating finite elements can be analysed to produce “composite member” load effects. In the example provided in this paper, finite element analysis results from a 3D finite element of a box girder can be easily converted to useful “overall” design effects such as longitudinal bending, torsion, and web shear. This greatly expands the application of finite element models for analysis of complex structures. Integrated analysis and design technique involves the provision of links between section – beam – analysis – and automated bridge loading procedures. This means that section properties, vehicle positions, analysis results, and design and code checking calculations can be linked together under the one seamless interface. The advantages of this integration are presented. The above topics are discussed in detail in relation to their implementation of the current release of SAM Integrated Bridge Design software. 1 INTRODUCTION Recent developments in modern bridge analysis and design software are discussed in the sections following. Three new techniques for bridge analysis and design presented in this paper are as follows: Automated vehicle load generation (to the AS5100 Australian Bridge Code and New Zealand Transit Manual); Composite analysis methods; and Integration of the bridge analysis and design processes.

DATA AT REST ENCRYPTION The VNX-F5000 and VNX-F7000 Data-At-Rest-Encryption (D@RE) uses Controller-Based Encryption, which provides the flexibility to support any drive types, speeds and capacities – including flash drives – as a non-disruptive software upgrade. VNX-F also allows the option of turning on encryption, non-disruptively, at any point in time (including after populating the array with data).

VNX-F D@RE encrypts all data written to disk, protecting data access against unauthorized drive removal (lost or stolen drives). VNX-F D@RE, encrypts at the drive level, i.e. every drive will have its own unique encryption key that is managed through an embedded encryption key manager. All current and future VNX drive types (SSDs, SAS and NL-SAS), drive speeds and drive capacities are supported with VNX D@RE.

CONTINUOUS AVAILABILITY TO KEEP THE BUSINESS RUNNING The VNX-F is architected to provide five-nines availability for applications requiring dedicated storage resources. VNX-F all flash arrays include:

• Mirrored write cache, where each storage processor contains both primary cached data for its LUNs and a secondary copy of the cache for its peer storage processor

• Battery backup to allow for an orderly shutdown and cache de-staging to vault disks to ensure data protection in the event of a power failure

• Pre-configured RAID5 protection—which distributes the data across the total amount of disks, increasing performance and at the same time providing redundancy.

• Proactive hot sparing enhances system robustness and delivers maximum reliability and availability

• Redundant data paths, power supplies, drive connections, and storage processors—all with non-disruptive field-replacement capabilities

• Continuous system monitoring, call-home notification, and advanced remote diagnostics

EMC Quality of Service Manager (QoS Manager) software is integrated seamlessly with the Unisphere web-based management interface to let you centrally and dynamically manage and allocate storage-system resources to meet your application service level requirements including response time, bandwidth, and throughput – with no host footprint. Essentially, QoS Manager allows you to prioritize applications (should you want to run multiple workloads on the VNX-F) and set specific performance service level targets per application. QoS Manager is capable of allocating and monitoring VNX-F system performance resources on an application-by-application (you can actually look at multiple metrics in parallel) basis helping to discover bottlenecks. For the admin, this helps provide a way to control and meet their application IO service level requirements (LUN by LUN; I/O Type Read or Write; and I/O Size) in environments where multiple applications may share the same VNX-F storage resources. All the VNX-F performance data that’s gathered by QoS Manager is presented in simple and clear charts describing application performance analysis and trending. In addition to displaying real-time data, QoS Manager allows you to archive performance data for offline trending and analysis
