Where's it from? Instead of the word Cariñena referring to the red grape of the same name (also known as Carignan in France) – it actually refers to a wine region. It is in the northeast of Spain, in the province of Zaragoza.

Dragon Hills Syrah 2017

Matthew's take... "The Dragon Hills wines are shining a spotlight on Romania and bringing people closer to its fascinating vinous offering. This Syrah is the antithesis of the big, heavy, black wines from warmer climes. Dragon Hills is a lighter, energetic, supple wine with a red apple skin freshness which delivers a crunch of vitality on the palate."

Where's it from? Romania has a history of winemaking that dates back 6,000 years, pretty impressive! However, it is only in recent years that their wines have started to make an impact on the international market. We’re right behind them.

Great with... With enough brightness and cherry-stone freshness to tackle richer fish dishes and chicken, this is a useful red to have in your wine rack.

The Long Way Round Reserve Pinot Noir 2019

Matthew's take... "I am so fussy about Pinot Noir, as this is a grape which requires careful handling in order to highlight its beauty and sophistication. The Long Way Round is a perfectly poised, keen wine with a lovely, red cherry and cranberry tang on the finish, and on the mid-palate there is a buoyant succulence which tugs gently at the heartstrings. This is an example of a Pinot Noir with style and class!"

Where's it from? Nestled in between the coast and the Andes lies the Central Valley of Chile. A winemaking powerhouse, here the patchwork of vineyards are kept hydrated by snow melt from the mountains above.

Great with... Anything with mushrooms, including mushroom pizza, works well with Pinot Noir – and it’s best served slightly chilled (which brings out the fruit flavours)..

Flôr l Mendoza Syrah 2019

Matthew's take... "This is an energetic and sprightly Syrah and it revels in its high altitude origins. The sleek lines and fresh-picked blackberry fruit is fascinating in this slim-line Syrah and it shows that this grape does not always make heavy-weight, powerful wines. Flôr l is a modern, vital red wine style which is far more flexible and multi-talented than the dinosaur wines of old."
