affect the files in OS X itself at all. None of the data on your Macis at risk of being deleted or altered. The entire process isactually quite straight forward – and all of the software involvedis free – so why not give it a shot :)
1. Before you get started, there are a few things that should benoted up front.i. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, itmight take a while to download Ubuntu. During theactual installation process, based on the version ofUbuntu you opt to install – you may have to spend sometime downloading updates as well
ii. The installation time is about 20 minutes, depending onthe speed of your Mac, amount of memory etc. You maywant to make yourself a cup of coffee or tea before youstart
iii. Running both Ubuntu and OS X at the same time will“slow down” your Mac. The more memory you have, thefaster your CPU and/or hard drive is – the less you’llnotice it
Let’s get started!
1. First up, head over to the Ubuntu download page anddownload the 64bit version of Ubuntu. From that page

you’ll be able to download either “Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS”or Ubuntu 15.04 (to download 15.04, scroll down a bit).No matter which version you opt to download, select the64bit version, and remember – using this guide, you’llhave no trouble installing either version – the steps andscreenshots are almost identical. Remember where yousaved the file!
2. Now you’ll need to download and install VirtualBox.Visit their download page and click the link titled“x86/amd64″ next to VirtualBox 4.3.28 for OS Xhosts (which is the current stable version). Once thedownload has completed, open the .dmg file and run theinstaller. When the very straight forward installation isdone, launch VirtualBox from your Applications folder.
3. When VirtualBox opens, click the New button.

4. Give your “virtual machine” a name (somethingdescriptive is good, but it doesn’t matter). Make surethe Type: is set to Linux and the Version: is Ubuntu(64 bit). Then click the Continue button.

5. Now you’re going to decide how much memory (RAM)you’re going to allocate to Ubuntu when it’s running, andhow much to leave for OS X. As illustrated in thescreenshot below, my total RAM is 4GB, so I allocatedhalf of it to Ubuntu, and the other half to OS X. The morememory you give to Ubuntu, the faster it will run. Thedrawback is that OS X will have less to use while Ubuntuis running. At a minimum, give Ubuntu at 1GB(1024MB) of RAM. When you’ve decided how muchmemory (RAM) to give Ubuntu, clickthe Continue button.

9. Give the “VirtualBox Disk Image” a name (again, doesn’treally matter, but descriptive is always helpful). Use the“slider” to determine the size you want to make the “harddrive” for Ubuntu. At a minimum, you’ll want to select6GB – and that will not allow for you to install manyprograms, let alone store files etc. Keep in mind thatbecause you selected “Dynamically allocated” in theprevious step, that does not mean that VirtualBox isgoing to take up that space right away. It means that asUbuntu needs more space, it will allow the “hard drive”to increase up to whatever size you set at this step.

As illustrated in the screenshot below, I opted to giveUbuntu 8GB. That’s enough for the installation and toinstall quite a few programs. Since I won’t be “storing”many files in Ubuntu (movies, pictures, music etc) –8GB will suit my needs. Plus, I have a small hard driveon my MacBook Air. If you have a big hard drive, youmight as well allocate more rather than less, again – thespace won’t be used until it’s needed. After you’ve madeyour selection, click Create.
