Students and families sat on the school’s front lawn, ate some s’mores they had made over a fake fire and read some fun books. At the end of the evening each child was able to take home 2 books to read at home. This event was sponsored by Title 1 as part of their parent involvement activities. Ms. A. Block, Robotics Advisor Seven teams will compete in this year’s challenge, “Pay Dirt”. Using a predetermined list of materials, students have six weeks to build and test their robot before the two-day competition held Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24. The game this year replicates a mining operation. Teams have three minutes to use their robot to collect simulated minerals and/or make repairs to the game field “mine shaft”. The highest ranking teams will then travel to the northern Plains regional Competition in Fargo. Hettinger students will also be preparing a marketing presentation and exhibit booth to sell their robot to panel of judges. The team is already busy designing their robot, creating a team t-shirt and visiting local businesses about team sponsorship. The BeST robotics season kicked off September 12 at DSU. we are in full swing with our sports schedule. The Fall sports are having great success. Our high school football team sports 34 boys. The high school volleyball team has a roster of 29 and cross country has 15 runners on their roster. we are very pleased with these numbers and all the kids and coaches are working hard and enjoying early season successes. In September we had the “Meet the nighthawks” event at the football field. It was a great success and I would like to thank all the supporters who came out to the event to meet all the kids and coaches representing our great communities of Hettinger and Scranton. As you all know, this was a free will event meant to help fund the Hettinger Black Devil Hall of Fame. I am excited to report because of the generosity of our community members we raised $700.00 to help the Hall of Fame. Thank you all for those generous donations! Please stay tuned for our winter session of “Meet the nighthawks”. Also, as we all know we rekindled the football rivalry with Lemmon. It has been at least five years since these two old rivals have played. In recognition of this new “Battle of the Border” Mr. Lueck has made a great traveling trophy which the winning team gets to display in their trophy case until the next year. Un-fortunately, the trophy now resides in Lemmon, but our boys will do their best to bring it back home next year. Lastly, as a note to all patrons who have key fobs

to our school. As you know, the key fobs you have will only open the doors by the pool area. we are more than willing and happy to provide these key fobs to our community members and to let them take advantage of our weight room and small gym. we just ask you to follow some rules while you use our facility. average of 20.8. The composite (average of all four of the tests on the ACT) scores were very comparable with our students’ scoring 19.3 and the state averaging 20.6. As far as the benchmark scores that the ACT sets as markers to gauge if students are ready for college, we have some disparity. In english the benchmark indicates that 48% of our students that tested are college ready, in Mathematics 29% are college ready, in reading 35% are college ready, and in Science 26% are college ready. These numbers are lower than we would like to see, but there is more explanation that needs to be given. what ACT bases their college ready benchmarks on correlates with scores required for students to have a high probability of success in credit-bearing college courses at a four year university. These requirements tend to be set higher than a two year or certificate program school. In addition, north Dakota is one of only thirteen states that test 100% of their graduates via the ACT. Out of those thirteen north Dakota’s average composite score ranks it as the third highest. In comparison with the entire country north Dakota sits around the thirty-third highest with Massachusetts with the highest composite score at 24.4, but only testing 28% of its graduates. we in north Dakota test all of our students no matter what their future plans entail after graduation with many other states only testing their four year university bound students. This data is helpful for our district as we plan our high school curriculum and programs, but often the numbers from the ACT and other assessments can be overwhelming to process and at times frustrating for a school staff who puts forth large amounts of effort, time, and caring for our students. we will continue to strive for higher levels of academic success for our students and the Hettinger School District.
