Principal's Report
Year 12 can see theFinish Line in Sight
Our Year 12 students have been diligently
undertaking their trial HSC examinations in
recent weeks. These exams are an
important aspect of the final stages of their
HSC preparation. Our students have
approached the exams well prepared and
very focussed, and we wish them well for
strong results.
Throughout this period, Year 12 students
undertaking courses that involve practical
submissions have also completed these
and submitted their work for HSC
assessment; and the students in music and
drama have their HSC performances
coming up in the next couple of weeks.
These, along with the submissions,
represent the culmination of many months
of commitment, creativity and passionate
application; achievements of which they
can all be justly proud.
Following the trial examinations, it will be
vital that Year 12 focus on course
consolidation, revision and final HSC
preparations. It is also the end of the
schooling journey and there are several
upcoming events to farewell the Year 12
cohort of 2017:
Target 20 nominees will begin their
program aer the exams.
Last day of school will be
Wednesday 20 September 2017
which will involve a BBQ breakfast
and activities for the cohort.
Graduation will be Thursday 21 September
2017 at 9.30am. At this year's graduation we
are seeking to introduce a new ‘tradition’
into our school and our school’s culture
whereby the entire student body form
a ‘guard of honour’ and clap Year 12 from
their graduation ceremony to their
celebration morning tea. It is envisaged
that this rite of passage is something that is
embraced by our sta and students alike.
SAS Sta RecognitionWeek
School Administrative and Support Sta
Recognition Week is 4 – 8 September 2017.
The school community is made up of a lot
of dierent people, all of whom play a part
in the running of schools and the provision
of quality education to students.
School Administrative and Support Sta,
whether they work in the oice, the library,
on the school grounds or in a classroom
setting, are important contributors to the
success of the school and students’
education. SAS Sta Recognition Week is an
opportunity for the school community to
acknowledge the vital role and contribution
that SAS Sta play in public education, and
to the culture and success of Henry Kendall
High School.
Our learning community recognises this
contribution and thanks our SAS Sta for all
they do.
NAPLAN 2017
Henry Kendall High School has performed
strongly in the 2017 NAPLAN examinations,
reflecting the impact of the targeted
interventions we have developed over the
past twelve months. Highlights include;
We have again achieved results that
place us as one of the strongest
Central Coast schools in all areas.
Students achieving in the top two
bands in Writing, Grammar &
Punctuation, Spelling, and
Numeracy in Year 7 exceeds that of
the state data. Equally, those
achieving in the lower bands is
significantly below that of the state
data.
Across all areas our Year 7 students
have demonstrated significant
growth, again exceeding the
achievement of students across the
state.
In terms of Year 9 Band 8
attainment for Minimum Standards,
Henry Kendall students have again
exceeded the state in both Reading
and Numeracy – a significant
achievement.
In Year 9 reading, 75.9% of students
exceeded their expected growth. In
Numeracy this figure is 77.3%.

Community Food Drive
My name is Lachlan Grabner and I am in
Year 11. I am currently participating in the
Max Potential program. Max Potential is a
program that helps young adults like myself
in achieving their goals and getting them
out of their comfort zone so they can grow
and become future leaders. It is a program
that is 22 weeks long program that also
gives back to the community by helping the
young adults complete a final project for
the program that helps the community. I
am keen to be apart the Max Potential
program because I can step out of my
comfort zone and grow as a person and
also give back to my community. The coach
that has been helping complete this
program is David Ardley.
For my Community Service Project I am
collecting canned food from my school
Henry Kendall High School and the school
next door Gosford Primary School. Once I
have collected food from both schools I am
giving it to Coast Shelter. My project is
targeting everyone and the people who will
get the food are people who are less
fortunate and homeless and do not have
any money to get food for themselves.
People can be involved in my project by
donating food to Coast Shelter and people
who are homeless.
My community service project will take
place at Henry Kendall High School. The
dates for the food collection will be
between the 25 July to 9 August.
My community service project goals are to
provide food to those who are less
fortunate than the rest of us. I hope to keep
a tradition of food drives going on in my
school so Coast Shelter will keep getting
food to provide for the homeless.
Thank you to all the sponsors who have
made this happen, Max Potential, Gosford
RSL and Coast Shelter.

Careers
Year 12
A reminder to any student applying for
early entry to Macquarie University through
the Global Leadership Entry Program that
applications close on 28 August - very soon!
Universities Admission Centre (UAC)
applications are now open for processing at
a cost of $58. Once this process has been
completed, students are entitled to apply
through the Schools Recommendation
Scheme (SRS) free of charge. Students will
need to have this completed by
6 September. The SRS oers will be out to
students even before their HSC marks. It
cannot be stressed too highly that all
university applicants should complete an
SRS application to increase their chances of
getting into university.
The best way to increase your chances of
entry to most universities is to obtain
feedback from your teachers on your Trial
HSC exams and take full advantage of
revision oered in class and to maintain
excellent attendance and participation.
Prospective TAFE students in 2018 will be
able to browse courses’ online through the
Hunter TAFE website sometime in October.
Most courses undertake enrolment next
January but high demand courses may
involve registering interest before January.
For advice, ring 131 225 to find out more
about Hunter TAFE. Many of our students
find the Northern Institute TAFE commuter
friendly with a wide variety of courses on
oer.
Apprenticeships, traineeships, scholarships
and job opportunities are relayed to
students in the daily notices and relevant
flyers can be obtained from the Careers
room door.
Maths & Milo
Need help with your Maths? Maths & Milo is

The Tell Them FromMe Student FeedbackSurvey (Term 3, 2017)
I am delighted that this term, our school,
like many other public schools in the state,
will participate in a Department of
Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me
student feedback survey. The survey
measures factors that are known to aect
academic achievement and other student
outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide
survey is on student wellbeing,
engagement and eective teaching
practices.
You may remember that our students also
participated in a Tell Them From Me
student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking
students to complete the survey twice in
one year allows us to identify trends in
student responses as well as track
engagement and motivation across the
school year.
The survey is a great opportunity for our
students to provide us with valuable and
quick feedback on what they think about
school life, how engaged they are with
school and the dierent ways that teachers
interact with them. Schools in Australia and
around the world have used the Tell Them
From Me survey to help improve how they
do things at school.
More information about the survey is
available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
I want to assure you that the survey is
confidential. The survey is conducted
online and will typically take less than 30
minutes to complete. It will be
administered during school hours between
21 August and 13 October. Participating in
the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers
about the survey is being sent home with
students. If you do not want your child or
children to participate, please return the
form to school by Monday 18 September
2017. Copies of the form and FAQs are
available from:
http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information
-for-parents.
Partners in LearningParent Survey
This term, our school will be participating
in the Partners in Learning parent survey,
another part of the Tell Them From Me suite
of surveys (student, teacher and parent
surveys) on student engagement. The
survey asks parents and carers questions
about dierent factors that are known to
impact on student wellbeing and
engagement.
Running this survey will help our school
understand parents’ and carers’
perspectives on their child’s experience at
school. These include: communication
between parents/carers and sta, activities
and practices at home and parent/carer
views on the school's support of learning
and behaviour. This valuable feedback will
help our school make practical
improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on
smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or
computers. The survey will typically take 15
minutes or less to complete and is
completely confidential. The parent survey
will be conducted between 21 August and
13 October. Although participating in the
survey is entirely voluntary, your responses
are very much appreciated.
Our school will provide further information
about how to access the survey. In the
meantime, more information about the
survey is available at:

Igniting Year 7 Students' Passionfor Poetry
Poetry can energise a classroom - yet so many students have
negative associations with it. The world of poetry is a wonderful
way for students to express emotions and think about the world
in a creative way. It is inclusive and sparks your curiosity
whenever you embrace it.
In our new Year 7 unit - ‘Poetry Performances’ students perform
poetry, collaborate, explore and create worlds, create film clips,
analyse poems, research poets and try on all dierent shapes
and sizes of poetry. Our students are even using a new soware
called Adobe Spark to create poetry that can be published
online.
More and more students are sharing their own passions for
poetry and making the written and spoken word vibrant. We
always come out of a classroom more inspired than when we
walked in.
Some student work samples:
Middle School News
These are the kinds of things you want students to express.
Poetry, aer all, is a safe way to get words out of your mind and
onto paper or even on the stage. Next time you might want
some inspiration, read some interesting poetry!
Taekwondo WorldChampionships
Congratulations Max Clignett in Year 12.
Max competed at the Taekwondo World
Championships in Argentina held on 10-13
August 2017. Max came away with a silver
and a bronze medal. What an amazing
result Max!
Personal Development,Health and PhysicalEducation
This term students in Years 7-10 have
participated in the dance unit. Students
have had fun dancing and socialising with
their peers. They have been working really
hard on their dance routines ready for
assessments starting this week, and their
eort and behaviour has been outstanding
throughout the unit. Students have
received written notification of the dates
and times of their assessment. There have
been some concerns over appropriate
costumes for the assessment – students
should dress in styles suitable to the dance
and these have been explained in class,
however smart, casual clothes they have at
home is fine. Parents should not feel
compelled to buy anything new. The
dances are as follows:
Year 7 – The Pride of Erin
Year 8 – Strip the Willow (bushdance)
Sports News
Year 9 – Cha-Cha
Year 10 – Rock N Roll
Students will need to remember to bring
their PE uniform for their next PE lesson
aer the assessment.

Recycling Team at HKHS
For several years the students in the Special Education Centre
at Henry Kendall High School have been involved in the Paper
and Cardboard Recycling Program. This has been a great
initiative as the students learn valuable work skills such as
reliability and responsibility. The program has been beneficial
for our school as we are managing our waste in a more
sustainable way and hopefully saving money.
Josh Lyons is one of the team members who collects cardboard
each day from the school canteen and takes it to the recycling
bin.
Parent Co ee Shop Visit
Parents of students in the Special Education Centre meet week
5 each term for a wonderful lunch and an interesting speaker.
Last week was no dierent with 35 parents in attendance and a
presentation from Peter Yates on NDIS in schools. Parents are
encouraged to attend as it is a great way to meet other parents
and stay in touch with services that can aid their children. We
send out invitations at the beginning of term or you can call and
book at any time.
Stay in Contact
We do have a closed group on Facebook that parents of the
students in the Special Education Centre are welcome to join
