Family-run businesses account

for almost 95% of all Indian

companies. The privatisation

of the Indian economy has given

Indian businesses a critical role in

the country’s growth process. With

today’s emphasis on an inclusive

growth process, traditional family

business values are generating

new-found interest in corporate

circles, particularly with respect to

employment, ethics, compliance,

social responsibility and

philanthropy, values which resonate

in CII’s theme of ‘Business for

Livelihood.’

The CII-FBN India Chapter highlighted the growth

opportunities and challenges that Indian family businesses

face and worked to build greater interaction between the

different constituents of Indian family business. With this

objective, the Chapter organised its XIIIth Annual Convention,

three regional workshops and six sensitisation sessions in

different parts of the country during 2011.

The CII-FBN XIII International Convention on Family

Business, titled ‘Family Business as Paradox’, held in New

Delhi in April 2011, highlighted the challenges faced by

Indian family businesses and owner-managers, through

sessions such as ‘Family and Business – A Fundamental

Dilemma,’ ‘Succession as a Cultural Event’ and ‘Family and

Business Governance.’ Issues relating to compensation

planning, the role of trusts, philanthropy, role of women

in family business, and the institutionalisation of processes

governing family and business were discussed, as also

how to leverage family knowledge for the benefit

of business. In a power-packed panel discussion on

‘Unconventional Strategy’, speakers talked about how

family belief systems strengthened their businesses. The

Convention was addressed by Prof. John Ward, The Family

Business Consulting Group, and Professor, Kellogg School

of Management, USA, Ms Annelie Karlsson, Founder &

Executive Director, FBN Sweden, and prominent heads of

Indian family businesses.

Arun Bharat Ram, Past President, CII, Member, CII-FBN India Chapter Core Group, and Chairman, SRF Ltd; Sunil Kant Munjal, Past President, CII, and Chairman, Hero Corporate Service Ltd; Pheroza J Godrej, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co. Ltd; and Dr Naushad Forbes, Director, Forbes Marshall Pvt. Ltd. at a panel discussion in New Delhi

Prof. John Ward, Founder Chairman, FBCG, and Clinical Professor, The Kellogg School of Management, USA, conducting a workshop in New Delhi

Ravi Poddar, Chairman, CII Eastern Region Family Business Task Force, and Chairman, Ravi Auto Ltd, at the CII-FBN India Chapter conference in Kolkata

Three regional workshops on

family business, held in Mumbai,

Kolkata and Chennai, were based

on the following themes:

• ‘Building Stronger Business

Through Strengthened Family

Alignment’

• ‘Family Values - The Key to

Legacy of Continuity and

Success’

• ‘Preparing Family Business for

Strategic Change’

The lead faculty for these

workshops was Mr Anil Sainani,

Director, S&S Empowering

Solutions Private Ltd.

Sensitisation Sessions on Family

Business were held in tier two

and tier three cities like Trichy,

Bhubaneswar, Cochin, Srinagar,

Pune, Jaipur and Ahmedabad.

These sessions helped the

participants to design their

short-term and long-term goals for

their family businesses.

The highlight of the India Brand Equity

Foundation’s (IBEF) activities during 2011-12 has

been the projection of Brand India consistently across

markets through the platform of ‘The India Shows’ and the

concomitant usage of digital media for the promotion of

Brand India.

IBEF led the branding initiatives under the aegis of the

Department of Commerce, Government of India, at The

India Show in Addis Ababa in May, and also undertook

branding for the 2nd Africa-India Forum Summit on

the request of the Union Ministry of External Affairs.

Subsequently IBEF effectively showcased India’s business

strengths across sectors through The India Show in Toronto

in October, followed by similar events in Lahore in February

2012, and later in Jakarta, in March 2012. In all these

markets, whilst the messaging on Brand India was kept

consistent, it was set in a blend of India and local market

designs.

The IBEF knowledge works, comprising the ‘Experience

India’ CDs/access info drives, the ‘India Now – Business and

Economy’ magazine and ‘Product Books,’ continued to be

a valuable resource tool leveraged by diverse audiences

within India and abroad. ‘The Best of India in Services,’

book, second in ‘The Best of India’ series, was prepared by

IBEF during the year. It highlights the successes scripted by

the Indian service industry across sectors, bringing Brand

India global repute.

Another key highlight of IBEF’s activities has been

innovative use of digital media technology across its

initiatives to promote Brand India to wider audiences in

markets abroad. This was particularly evident in IBEF’s

initiatives at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic

Forum at Davos 2012 where numerous positive Brand India

stories were generated in the form of blogs, audio-video

and images through IBEF’s web-based initiative centred

around ‘Conversations on India’ at the India Adda (www.

india-at-davos.ibef.org). Also noteworthy were the special

promotional efforts made by IBEF for tea, coffee and spices.

IBEF’s ‘India Ingenious’ brand campaign at Davos was

well-noticed. The online and offline branding initiatives

synergised to impact audiences in and outside Davos.

In a natural progression in its brand strategy, IBEF stepped

into sectoral branding in 2011-12. Under the aegis of

the Department of Commerce, IBEF conceptualised and

developed the brand strategy for Brand India Pharma

in collaboration with the export promotion council,

Pharmexcil. As a first step, IBEF negotiated Focus Country

status for India at the largest pharmaceutical exhibition

platform, CPhI, making India the first country to get this

status. IBEF prepared a Brand India Pharma kit and active

partnered in leading the global launch of Brand India

Pharma at CPhI Japan in March 2012.

During the year, IBEF truly synergised its Knowledge Centre

and Communication initiatives to promote Brand India in

overseas markets

Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs,

in partnership with CII, the Institute

of Company Secretaries of India, and

the importance of implementing good

corporate governance practices, both

at the individual corporate level and for

the economy as a whole. In 2010, the

Institute of Cost and Works Accountants

of India, and the National Stock Exchange came on board

as Trustees.

The NFCG works closely with partner institutions and

accredited institutions to provide a platform for quality

discussions and debates amongst academicians, policy

makers, professionals and corporate leaders through

research, conferences, orientation programmes, meetings

and seminars in areas of corporate governance, CSR and

sustainability.

In 2011-12, NFCG supported various flagship CII events such

Standards focussed on facilitating

industry’s understanding and adoption of

the new financial reporting system (XBRL)

and the converged Indian Accounting

Standards (IndAS). Interactive sessions on

XBRL were held in Delhi and Mumbai.

The CII Committee on Dispute Resolution focussed on

establishing and developing the CII Centre for Alternate

Dispute Resolution to provide an institutionalized

mechanism for resolving commercial disputes amicably,

economically and quickly, by a process of conciliation,

mediation and arbitration. An Interactive Session on

Salvaging Dispute Resolution was organised in Mumbai in

September.

In partnership with the Singapore International Arbitration

Centre, CII organised a conference on Arbitration India:

Protecting Business Interests in the Changing Global Market

in January 2012 in New Delhi. The Conference brought

together arbitrators, counsels and judges from India,

Singapore and the region to discuss international arbitration

for dispute resolution, in the backdrop of India’s position as

an investment destination.

Young Indians, a platform for progressive young

Indians between 25-40 years of age, works towards

its objective of realising the dream of a developed

India.

During the year, Young Indians (Yi) worked actively

in sectors as diverse as healthcare, environment, and

agriculture, interacting with government officials, industry

representatives and other stakeholders.

For the first time ever, Yi hosted the G20 Young

Entrepreneur Alliance Leadership Assembly and Interim

Meetings. In January 2012, Presidents and Sherpas from 17

of the 20 member countries of the G20

Young Enterprenuer Alliance (YEA) joined Yi in New Delhi

for three days of meetings followed by a visit to the Taj

Mahal. India, as host nation, created history as a MoU

(drafted by Yi), outlining deliverables and procedural codes

for working together as a ‘Chartered Alliance’ of youth

organisations representing the 20 most powerful nations

in the world, was signed. Fifteen of Yi’s Governing Council

members were ‘official observers’ for the event, and used

the opportunity to build bridges with delegates from

around the world to explore opportunities of

working together.
