Eight Xtreme athletes competed in The University of Central Oklahoma’s annual Endeavor Games in Edmond, June 7-10. First held in 2000, the Games are for children, adults and military service members- giving them an opportunity to display their talents in a proper and competitive setting against individuals with similar disabilities. Accompanied by Adapted Sports Director Jenna Malsbury, SA Xtreme Track & Field Coaches Andrew and Mallory Wyble, SA Xtreme Swim Coach, Lindsay Grogan, and Haley Tarase, our athletes showed determination and outperformed all expectations!

Xtremely Rewarding Results

Kinetic Kids entered 23 athletes in Track & Field, Swimming and Archery events at the 2018 Texas Regional Games. This paraylympic-style competition promotes programs for adapted sports throughout Texas for athletes with physical disabilites and visual impairments. Thanks to Lead Adaptive Sports Director Jenna Malsbury, SA Xtreme Coaches Andrew and Mallory Wyble, SA Xtreme Swimming Coach Lindsay Grogan, Coach Scott LeBlanc, and Archery Coach Roger Koss who attended to help our athletes perform their very best.

ArcheryFor the first time, SA Xtreme had four athletes compete. Even though they had just two clinics to prepare, they ROCKED it!

SwimmingFor five of the nine athletes, this was their first swim meet ever! The butterflies in their stomachs were replaced by smiles on their faces.

Track and FieldWeather delays made for a very long Saturday, yet our athletes rose to the occasion and persevered to the end!

Luke & Claire Godinez “In two years we went from a young couple trying to start a family to parents of two children with special needs—Luke with Down Syndrome and Claire with an undiagnosed genetic condition. Our lives were consumed with medical appointments and missed milestones. An emotional wall went up as we realized they would miss the childhood experiences we loved—parties with friends and playing sports. Kinetic Kids opened up opportunities we didn’t think existed, like Claire learning to swim, Luke busting a move at dance or passing the basketball to a friend at practice. Each season, we sit on the sidelines not as caregivers to children with special needs, but simply as parents, watching our kids be kids…just like everyone else.”

- Luke’s & Claire’s Mom

Nathanael Solis“Nathanael has been a Kinetic Kid for 8 years. He has competed in swimming, wrestling, tennis, football, golf, basketball, baseball, karate and dance.

Kinetic Kids began as a way for him to get much needed swim lessons…now it’s family. He feels comfortable, supported, at home, and loved at every activity. His birthday parties are populated with kids he met through Kinetic Kids. He is dressed and ready hours before practice. His favorite thing is still the finale parties!” - Nathanael’s Mom

Cooper Thompson“In 2010, Cooper was fearless about jumping in the pool, but I wanted to make sure he could keep his head above water so I enrolled him in a Kinetic Kids swim class. Now, he swims across the deep end alone thanks to the confidence he gained in his classes. Today, his favorite class is gymnastics. He loves the bars, the balance beam, doing handstands and playing in the foam pit! I get such joy watching him interact with the volunteers and become better at waiting his turn. He still has his “I prefer not to” attitude about doing the warm-up routines, but I am waiting for the day when he does the turn-around jump on the trampoline. With Kinetic Kids, anything is possible!”

Xtreme Athlete SpotlightElicia MeairsAt 13 years old, Elicia was theonly Xtreme athlete to compete in the wheelchair division relay and she’ll be in the same event again at 2018 Junior Nationals. She threw a national record of 5.05 meters in Shot Put and 10.93 meters in Javelin. Elicia was also the first racer athlete to ever compete on her middle school track team—a direct result of the hard work she exerts to be the best she can be!

Elizabeth WadeAt 8 years old, Elizabeth was the only Kinetic Kid athlete who competed in both Track & Field and Swimming. She made history as the youngest athlete in the 800m and 1500m runs and as the only female athlete in the 1500m. Her time in that event was an amazing 8:10.87! Her stellar results qualified her to be classed up a division for Junior Nationals.

On January 20, Kinetic Kids held its 7th Annual Walk.Run.Roll event generously sponsored by New Balance SA. Over 500 runners competed in chip-timed 5K/10K courses along scenic Salado Creek in the shadow of the AT&T Center. Spectators at the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex were inspired by the determination of the 100+ kids and families who completed the 1-mile course with wheelchairs, walkers, leg braces, prosthesis, and running blades.

A record $26,601 was raised to fund scholarships, adaptive equipment, qualified instructors and facility rentals. A family fair atmosphere with super heroes, games, a health expo and everyone’s favorite—free Magnolia Pancake Haus pancakes at the finish line—made the event unforgettable!

This year’s Team Spirit Award went to Team Camila while our top fundraising champion was Rhaya Edison! Thank you to our awesome Race Director, Julie Van Horn, Sheryl Moreno and all of the dedicated sponsors and volunteers who helped make this event such a success!

Kinetic Kids athletes, Evan, Arturo, Matthew, Austin and Cooper raised a total of $3,110 for Valero Texas Open’s Birdies for Charity program to benefit Kinetic Kids programs. For their fundraising efforts, the boys won some pretty cool prizes! A total of $12,830 was raised in full and Valero generously matched it by 7%. In fact, Valero Energy Foundation has delivered over $122 million to children’s charities across the U.S. since 2002.

On March 22, area non-profits raised over $5 million dollars throughThe Big Give, an annual city-wide online giving day. Kinetic Kids knocked it out of the park with BIG results for the fifth year in a row!

We are grateful to the RWM Foundation and Harvey Najim who provided $5,000 each in matching funds, effectively doubling early donations.

Funds raised with The Big Give combine with other donations throughout the year to allow us to discount our programming costs an amazing 72% per child! We are so very grateful to all our 527 faithful donors—you ROCK!
