The Eight O Clock WhistleGrowing up in Lyndhurst in the
la te th irties a nd early forties, a nightly phenom enon occurred. At eight o ’clock sharp, the whistle atop the town hall would give out three sharp blasts signaling the town's children to stop what they were doing a nd head fo r home. Baseball bats would be thrown down, jum p ropes wound up and participants in the nightly game o f hide and seek w ou ld em erge fro m their hiding places and jo in the exodus o f children heeding the call o f the eight o ’clock whistle. The whistle blasted out its message in such a manner that no one could claim that he or she hadn t heard it The whistle had been donated to the town by Leslie Co. a local manufacturer who produced fo g horns fo r sea-going vessels. Whenever I heard its eerie sound, I imagined sea-gulls circling around fog-shrouded ships a ttem p tin g to m ake th e ir way through treacherous channels.
The whistle blew its eight o clock
curfew all year round. In the winter.
when / w a s already in m y pajamas and read}' fo r bed, it d idn 't have quite the dramatic effect as in the summertime. The whistle also served as a fire alarm whose scary sound startled me awake in the middle o f the night causing me to tremble in fear. But, most o f all, I remember the hot summer nights, when thanks to day'light saving time, it was not \yet dark and our hours o f carefree play were extended fa r more than normal.
When the eight o 'clock whistle blew, I d realize that another day was drawing to an end. Dragging my feet a little, I d cut across the fields toward home. The mosquitoes followed me like a horde o f dive bombers, gathering into form ation fo r an attack on my bare arms and legs. They served as further incentive to me. to propel m y reluctant s e l f into the oven-like interior o f the house.
The eight o clock whistle o f my childhood still lingers in my mind. I can still recall the sense o f security' brought about by the unchanging ritual o f the eight o clock whistle shattering the silence o f a hot summer night, and signaling the end o f ye t another day

Bill Gormley is the right man for the jobTo the Editor,
New Jeney has suffered some o f the w o n t representation in Washington o f any state in the Union. We have had weak and unimaginative senators and congressmen, few o f whom did much for the state. Maybe that’s why New Jeney ranks 50th out o f SO states in the amount o f money we get back from the federal government. We send wheel barrows o f tax money to Washington and get back a thimble full in the way o f grants and aid.
The only bright spot to all this is that Senator Frank Lautenberg h a s

ore of an influence on impressionable chll- than most parents seem to have. Conse-
more kids seem disillusioned, detached found to be exhibiting bizarre behavior - in iy cases just to get attention. Last week a ig boy attacked his schoolmates with a BB

embers of the New Jersey State Legisla- have authored various bills making par- responsible for their children’s hurtfUl and

r. It is obviously bad parenting when m or dad continually leave kids unsuper-

■But there are many less clear cut cases that Infust be considered before any bill is paased | criminalizing parents. Some Idds, despite a
mental interference in parenting in New Jersey, with little good to show for it. Thera are many teachers, police and other officials telling parents what to do without offering any help.
Before criminalizing parental conduct, the state should be doing more to make parenting easier. If New Jersey wants to be a leader in improving parenting, it should have the courage to make for reaching reforms that will give parents the one thing they lack - more control over their kids and more time with them. The legislature can start by reducing marketing to children. Kids are barraged with constant media message to want more of this, to take more of that, to go to extremes. Those messagea undermine parental authority and a national movement must be started to correct the problem. Let it start in New Jersey.
For all of America’s talk about supporting the “family” isn’t it odd that the tax deduction given parents for children lags for behind other tax code deductions - including corporate tax breaks. If parenting is to be honored, lets start by reflecting that in the tax code and increaae the child deduction to where it should be, thereby giving parents more of their own money to do the job society expects them to do. Parents also need more fM Qfety In their work schedules. More parents should be permitted to work part of the week from home, and government and industry can help.

County Exec should veto BCUA planTo the Editor.
Apparently the deliberations are winding dow n.... last week the Bergen County Utilities Authority passed a resolution to commence negotiating a deal with NYC that will bring 3,000 tons o f garbage (far more than initially purported) daily into North Arlington, New Jeney! Fortunately the final decision will rest with the County E x
ec u tiv e . I t ’s been said tha t Pat Schuber is “not leaning either way’’ and will need to know the number o f trucks, length o f the contract and the financial benefit to the BCUA before making his decision.
Can the figures that are being bandied about be that soft!
The proposal calls for 500 trucks, carrying approximately 3,000 tons o f garbage, coming into New Jersey from New York City daily. The trucks will travel here via GWB as well as thej Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, along] our highw ays and local thorough-1 fares, ultimately making their way to North Arlington. Upon reaching the Transfer Station they will dump their

would offer his own relatives who are minas, s cigarette, a gun, a buckst of quarters for the slots and s Playboy
> I find it puzzling how Mr. Silva can accuse you, a follow columnist, of ’‘.Commenting on the disposition of Anerican social standards" when ths« iJao clearly not what your column *as about. Children should not be edposed to many social situations. I’m sjre that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms would agree ada- rapntly. Mr. Silva has the presumption to suggest that children should« exposed to “every aspect of theirculture” and should lesrn from adults i(J“every social setting.” This would live to include sambling and pomog-rs}*y as well then wouldn’t it? Ifind¡•¡difficult to believe that Mr. Silva
Perhaps Mr. Silva would ertfoy installing picture windows in sll ths topless ban in America so that we can ALL be exposed to that aspect of our culture? Maybe hs should invits s local toddler out for s six pack sod tsks the little tyke off to a shooting range. Possibly, ths children of Mr. Silvs's “extsnded community” would enjoys good bachelor or bachalomte patty or two. Mr. Silva could go along to explain folly the knportanos of this particular custom in society. There are LAWS that govern thie type of behavior that ara integral to the survival of the very children Mr. Silvs wants us to expoee ALL of our culture to. They are there to protect our children! Mr. Silva would benefit enor
mously from an educatioa on what the United Ststes Oovemmsnt mskss laws for. InMesdofiealizing the point you msds sbout the Isgality snd safety of the children being in the bar thst night, Mr. Silva goea off on a wild tangent, babbling about tribal cultures and how wsll ths children are adjusted because nothing is “tucked away in taboo-land”! I suggsst thst if Mr. Silvs is such a An ofthsss tribal cultures, he should go snd live in one. He seems much bettsr suited to comment in thst srea anyhow.
Mr. Call, 1 have been s fan of youn for a long time. I have found your opinions insightful snd your anecdotes smusing. I sm sorry you have to have a co-worker who is so reactionary. You keep up the good workl

A shadow now lies across the land. For As ftiturs use of this Isnd is now being discussed. Its use debated. The use of this lend can have either a poei- tive or a trsmsndous negative effect on ths lives of local and county real-
If the Becton-Dickinson Company chooses to sell the land for commercial or industrial development, it will have only a negative effect on the srea. It will bs the next sets of deser-

Commercial development o f the property would degrade our area with increased traffic, noise, pollution and congestion. Traffic would be snarled on Hackensack Street, small local businesses destroyed, potential recreation sites lost, the local high school adversely effected
