Hello!

So, I know it is not quite New Year’s yet, but I wanted to get a start on some of my goals for this next year! I want to share these with you for two reasons, accountability and assistance. I will need your help to be successful...

1. Get our members more involved at the county and state level. While we do have many that take advantage of the great opportunities that are offered, we also have so many more that have not. I am hoping to see 90% club participation (one person from each club at the least) at the following club and county events: Music & Drama Festivals, Communication Art Festival, county wide community service project, the county fair, officer training, Fall Fest, Adult Leader Meetings, Youth Leader Meetings, Fall Forum, and state offered trips.

2. Start quarterly conversations and training with club leaders. We are very lucky to have a solid group of club leaders, but we mustn’t equate that with not needing support or more training. These trainings will create space to learn, grow, connect, and ask questions. One example topic will focus on writing SMART goals for charters. The main club leader or one other leader must attend each of these sessions. The first will be February 25 at 6:30 pm at the Extension office. Snacks will be provided.

3. Start volunteer mentoring program. Over the past six months I have been putting together a volunteer mentoring program that will match our new volunteers with a few of our more experienced volunteers. The potential outcomes will be higher retention and involvement from new volunteers, as well as greater confidence, capability, and comfort in taking on new roles.

I know these goals may seem lofty, but I believe they are achievable, especially when we work together. I am really looking forward to accomplishing some awesome things with all of you!

A Word from the BoardNetworking is defined as… “the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts.” Six times a year the county has leader’s association meetings at the Center Town Hall at 7 pm. All county leaders are invited to attend these meetings. You will meet other leaders just like you and learn what is happening in the county. Networking is a great way to obtain ideas on how other clubs do activities, handle attendance issues, how to make your club grow.

Being a leader does not mean you know all the answers, knowing who to ask is most likely half the battle. Don’t work harder by re-inventing the wheel, work smarter and ask questions to others. I personally have learned a lot of new and interesting tips from attending these meetings and talking with other leaders.

One of the leader’s association goals for 2020 is to have some networking opportunities at each meeting, to help everyone get to know each other. You never know—you might take home a few new ideas that might work well for your club or share something you’re doing with them… or better yet you end up making a friend for life.

Project UpdatesHorse Project NewsGreetings from the Horse Project. Our next meeting is January 28 at 7 pm, at FVTC. We hope to see you there! Contact Danielle Schlueter at [email protected] for more information.

In the last newsletter, we mentioned everyone going to EXPO which was held in September. We had youth in educational events and youth with their horses, if they qualified at the Fair. The Jr. Horse Judging team, with three new members, received a Top Ten.

Our Senior Judging Team with Reasons, which included two juniors, did awesome and received a Top Ten, finishing in 5th place. Our Senior Problem Solving Team also received a Top Ten. There were other placings in educational events as well. Some of the same youth who do the educational events also show horses and everyone came home with awards.

After a long day of showing, they still had energy to hang out. These youth make us proud in the way they support each other, take care of their animals, and show good sportsmanship.

Youth LeadersHelping the Homeless ProjectATTENTION all Outagamie County 4-H Clubs:

The Outagamie County 4-H Youth Leaders will once again be asking for your help in donating various items for the homeless that take refuge in the two shelters in Appleton. We thank you for your help in the past, and please consider helping again! The Warming Shelter and Pillars were VERY thankful for our donation to them. One of the Youth Leaders goals this year is to have participation from at least 75% of Outagamie 4-H clubs. Each year we are so close in achieving this goal. Can you please consider this as one of your club’s community service activities for this year?

You may sign-up at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4daaae2da1f94-2017 for an item or monetary donations. Your donation can then be delivered or sent to Lisa Lemke, Mentor of the Youth Leaders, 2824 N Rankin St. Appleton 54911 or bring to the January 27 Leaders meeting.

If there are any questions please contact any of the Youth Leader Officers or Mentors.

There is still some work that needs to be done on my side with getting them prepped for the state, but without your heavy lifting I would not be able to get that done. Next year I am looking at having a charter informational meeting for all main contacts to help answer questions and give pointers. Please be looking for that this summer. Thanks again for all your work!

Club Officer TrainingThe Outagamie County 4-H Officer Training was held on September 24. Thank you to all of the members who were able to attend. Fifteen of our eighteen clubs were represented! The evening began with a welcome andgot right to business about their handbooks and a presentation on how to use Bob’s Rules to run a meeting.

Thank you to Pamela Knaack, Emily Sprangers, Rose Rynish, Al and Lisa Lemke for hosting a breakout session to talk specifically about the new officers elected positions. The group came together again to form a Super 4-H Club. One spokesperson from each group became an officer of the super club. Together they conducted a meeting including a fun recreational game.

This fun filled evening of learning, hosted a great opportunity for members to socialize outside of their 4-H club and learn about responsibilities they have in their position to take back to their club.

Club leaders, please remember to encourage your officers to attend events such as these. They are designed to promote leadership and creativity all through a friendly and fun atmosphere.

Bits & PiecesSigns, Signs, where are all the Signs?!Years back the Outreach committee designed and purchased 600 Join 4-H Signs. Traveling throughout the county we have noticed less than 50. If you have a Join 4-H sign, please proudly display them during the months of August, September and early October. If you no longer want to display your sign, please return them to the Extension office for others to display. Thank you!

Dairy Bar Superintendents NEEDEDPlease consider joining the Dairy Bar team of Superintendents for the 2020 fair! Many of the current superintendents would love to enjoy the fair more by not working so many hours in the dairy bar! The more hands we have the less hours any of us have to work.

Reach out to Lisa Lemke at 920-450-2894 with questions about working in the dairy bar as a PAID superintendent. Thanks in advance for your willingness to join a team of dedicated workers who get the privilege to work with the many youth and adult volunteers!

4-H Emblem Use Many clubs use the 4-H emblem to promote within our county. Promotions could include: making posters, banners, t-shirts for their club or signs

Before you send that document, t-shirt or sign to the printer, review the guidelines for proper use of the 4-H name and emblem or contact Alicia.

They belong to the 4-H Youth Development program, under the authority of USDA and anyone wishing to use it must obtain permission. As a 4-H member or volunteer, you are permitted to use the emblem.

If you have a question about how you are using the emblem contact the Extension Office. You can also download the 4-H brand guidelines under 4-H Professionals at www.4-h.org.

Volunteer LeadersOutreach Volunteer OpportunitiesWe are looking for volunteers who would be available to help with occasional outreach programs around the county. Main responsibilities include, manning a booth and engaging in conversation with the attendees and answering any questions about 4-H and our county 4-H programming. We would like to develop a list of members, leaders and parents who we could ask to help us at some of our event opportunities.

If you could spare some time to help out occasionally, please contact a member of the Outreach Committee or email Mary Hoefler: [email protected] or Sheila Vander Zanden: [email protected]
