This annual event reflects the University of California, Irvine’s commitment to excellence, both within and beyond the academy. I invite you to celebrate with our student scholars as they share knowledge discovered through their research journeys. Each year, the Symposium is a powerful reminder, not only of the process of discovery, but also of how each new breakthrough provides a building block for overcoming future challenges. UCI encourages its students and helps them pursue their dreams by providing excellent skills and techniques for further inquiry and continued intellectual growth. I cannot express enough my thanks to the dedicated faculty mentors who help instill these values and skills in our students. My appreciation also goes to the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program team for organizing this sympo- sium, and for their continuing efforts in fostering undergraduate research at UCI. This year marks the publication of Volume X of The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, a sampling of the most outstanding undergraduate research pro- jects presented at last year’s Symposium. UCI’s continuing effort to undergraduate research has become a national model for how a research university can effectively enhance the educational experience of its undergraduates. To further celebrate creativity and research, it is my distinct pleasure to sponsor the Chancellor’s Award for Excel- lence in Undergraduate Research for the twelfth consecutive year. This award recognizes the outstanding contribu- tions of one student and faculty member from each school. Along with the entire UCI community, I offer my congratulations to this year’s talented award recipients, and to all students and faculty participating in the 2008 UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium. Thank you for joining us in this celebration of the learning that accompanies research. Sincerely, Michael V. Drake, M.D. Chancellor

A Welcome from Undergraduate Education

May 31, 2008

Dear UCI Community Members and Guests:

Welcome to the 15th annual UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of California, Irvine. This event is an exciting opportunity to experience the best in faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative projects at UCI. Students will share their discoveries, whether they are explorations into the newest frontiers of science and technology, interpretations of our past and surroundings, or insights into our inner selves. This year’s theme, “Undergraduate Re-search, from Discovery to Application,” reflects the research process, through which concepts and observations are de-veloped into applications for the benefit of all.

The Symposium is a celebration of much of what the UCI Community has to offer—from the accomplishments of our students to the efforts of its world-renowned faculty. We hope that this year’s symposium will inspire continued scholarly and creative achievement, both in the students presenting today and in those who may be newly motivated by what they see and hear. To that end, we hope that students will recognize the benefits of collaborating on projects and sharing ideas, that faculty will be rewarded by the atmosphere of inquiry and exchange they were instrumental in creating, and that guests will gain an appreciation for the community of insight and collaborative curiosity fostered at UCI.

The accomplishments of the students presenting here today have made us extremely proud. Each has contributed to the growth of our collective body of knowledge. Through the Symposium, UCI students and faculty continue, each year, to raise the standards for excellence in leadership, achievement and success. It is our hope that by sharing their knowledge today, they will realize how far their accomplishments have taken them and will be inspired to pass along the tradition of undergraduate research and creative projects to future generations of UCI scholars.

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) in the Division of Undergraduate Education assists UCI’s students by facilitating and funding their involvement in faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative activities. As the organizer of today’s symposium, UROP has provided research assistance and funding to many of today’s present-ers. UROP programs also include advising undergraduate students about on- and off-campus research opportunities, and publishing The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, an annual multidisciplinary publication. In addition, the Summer Under-graduate Research Program (SURP) allows students to become fully immersed in a research project or creative activity under the guidance of UCI faculty members. More recently, UROP has collaborated with other units on campus to spon-sor three additional summer undergraduate research programs: the Integrated Micro/Nano Summer Undergraduate Re-search Experience (IM-SURE); the Inter-Disciplinary Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (ID-SURE); and the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship on Information Technology (SURF-IT). UROP is part of a campuswide network of faculty, departments and programs dedicated to supporting the undergraduate research enterprise at UCI.

Thank you for participating and for supporting the undergraduate researchers presenting here today. We especially thank all the faculty mentors who have devoted so much of their time and effort mentoring these students. We look forward to following these outstanding individuals as they continue their quest for knowledge, and hope that today’s program leaves you inspired to ask new questions, seek answers, and to celebrate each discovery.

Sincerely,

Sharon V. Salinger Said M. Shokair Dean, Division of Undergraduate Education Director, UROP

Keynote Speaker

Hans S. Keirstead, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Anatomy & Neurobiology

Dr. Hans S. Keirstead is an Associate Professor at the Reeve-Irvine Research Center and Co-Director of the Stem Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine. The Canadian-born neuroscientist received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada; his doctoral thesis concerned his invention of a novel method for regenerating damaged spinal cords, and formed the basis of several worldwide patents and the formation of a company. This work constituted the first demonstration of functional regeneration of the injured adult spinal cord, and for his achievements he received the Cameron Award for the outstanding Ph.D. thesis in Canada. Dr. Keirstead then moved to Cambridge, England, where he conducted four years of Post-Doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge, furthering his studies of spinal cord injury and beginning studies of multiple sclerosis. He received the distinct honor of election to two senior academic posts, Fellow of the Governing Body of Downing College, and Senate Member of the University of Cambridge, and was the youngest member to be elected to those positions.

In 2000, Dr. Keirstead joined the Reeve-Irvine Research Center, a leading center for spinal cord injury research, at the University of California, Irvine. He has founded or partnered with biotechnology companies to fund and con-duct pre-clinical and clinical development. Dr. Keirstead was recently awarded the Distinguished Assistant Professor of UCI Award, the UCI Academic Senate’s highest honor, and, in 2005, was awarded the UCI Innovation Award for innovative research leading to corporate and clinical development. He is also Vice Chancellor of Academic Devel-opment at UDECOM (University of Community Development, in French) situated in Guinea, Africa.

Dr. Keirstead has testified at Federal and California Senate Hearings on several occasions regarding the potential of stem cells, is an avid scientific correspondent for public education, was an advisor to the California government on stem cell policy, was a Scientific Advisory Committee Member of the California Stem Cell Initiative that authored Proposition 71, and maintains working relationships with several stem cell companies, venture capital groups, and government economic development offices in the United States, Sweden and Norway.

The focus of the Keirstead laboratory is the development of strategies to limit degeneration and enhance regenera-tion after spinal cord injury and disease. The Keirstead Research Group is investigating strategies to reduce or elimi-nate the post traumatic enlargement of spinal cord injury sites that normally occurs after traumatic injury. The Group also investigates cell transplantation therapy for spinal cord injury, and was the first laboratory in North America to gain access to human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) for CNS trauma research.

Performances The performances will showcase the quality of faculty-mentored undergraduate creative projects from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. From late afternoon, on into the early morning hours, many UCI Dance majors are in the rehearsal studios preparing for projects and performances outside of their ordinary curriculum. Bare Bones Dance Theater and the UCI Etude Ensemble are two such dance groups; the former, a student-run organization, and the latter, an esteemed modern dance ensemble working under the artistic direction of Professor Donald McKayle. Together, these two groups of hard-working undergraduate artists participate in activities including master classes, dance concerts, dance exchange projects, and outreach programs.
