Our Advent prayer, from St. Theresa of Avila, includes this challenge: May you trust God that
you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are
born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has
been given to you.
Twice a year, we award Justice Grants from the St. Joan of Arc Outreach Fund to organizations
and projects in which our parishioners are committed volunteers and leaders – and you are
everywhere! It is a joyful process, using the gifts we have received, and passing on the love
that has been given to us.
Our Justice Grant committee met last week, and awarded a total of $66,750 in grants to 16
organizations. In our own SJA neighborhood, we funded a documentary about the historic
Hale and Field School merger; the bilingual programs of Joyce Preschool (where 100% of the
graduates are kindergarten-ready!); and the powerful work of the South Minneapolis Grief
Coalition. Globally, we will help Luminarias provide education and support to girls in poverty in
Guatemala, and the “Friend Help Friend” Center as they serve people with AIDS in Cambodia.
We funded the respite offered by Peace House Community to people living on the street, and
1000 meals prepared and delivered by Open Arms MN to people with life-threatening illness.
Urban Boatbuilders will provide skills and training to local youth and the Living at Home Block
Nurse Program will provide mental health services to elders. Clare Housing will use our funds
to provide housing and supportive services to people living with HIV/AIDS and the Enneagram
Prison Project will serve inmates in the Shakopee women’s prison and expand to the men’s
prison at Lino Lakes. We awarded grants to several congregations providing sanctuary to un-
documented brothers and sisters, and to the Muslim Peacemaker Team, helping Iraqis rebuild
their lives after years of war and occupation. We are thrilled to partner with the Joint Religious
Legislative Coalition’s interfaith efforts and with the Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative in
trainings on racial justice.
Please pick up the recipient list after mass, with more info. Thank you to all who volunteer with
these organizations and with our Justice Grant committee, and a special thank you to all who
donate to our SJA Outreach Fund.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu said: Dear Child of God, you are loved with a love that nothing can
shake. And God says, please, my child, help me to spread love and laughter and compassion.
As you do this – hey, presto! – you discover joy. And we discover that we are exactly where we
are meant to be. Happy Advent, St. Joan of Arc.

The Sunday Morning Registration and Information Office
is located in the Parish Center. In the office you may register to
become a SJA parishioner; get program information; sign up for
a program; and register to volunteer. The office is open after both
of our Sunday morning liturgies.
Wedding Policies: Weddings at St. Joan of Arc are provided as a
service to members of the parish community. For a
wedding to take place at SJA, it is necessary that one
of the engaged couple be a registered member of the
parish for at least six months before a wedding date
can be set. A date can only be scheduled by one of
the priests after an initial interview with the engaged couple. A mini-
mum of six months from the time the date is set to the wedding is
necessary in order to complete requirements. In cases where there
has been a previous marriage ending in divorce, it is not possible to
set the wedding date until notice of an annulment is in hand. FFI call
Sherri Stella at the Parish Center.
TRUST’s Chore Program Needs Workers! The program provides
household chore and maintenance services to seniors living in
South Minneapolis—helping them to continue living safely and
independently in their own homes. Currently, TRUST is looking for
workers, or volunteers, that can do any of the following jobs: snow
removal, small repairs, and house cleaning. If you are interested,
please call the TRUST Chore Program at 612.827.6150.
Holiday Volunteering: We are overwhelmed by your generosity,
and we thank everyone who donated your time and
your gifts to our Jesse Tree, to Project Kateri, Wreath
of Love and Christmas with Dignity. Your thoughtful-
ness reached out to children and elders, to the home-
less, and to low-income families struggling in this season. We also
thank SJA for the more than 250 Christmas cards you wrote to
families in immigration detention centers to let them know they are
not forgotten. You are the love of Christ at work in the world, and
we are grateful to you all.
Justice Grant Highlight: MicroGrants provides small grants to
help low-income people fund education or business start-up costs
- and they are a Justice Grant recipient from our SJA Outreach
Fund. MicroGrants recently received $100,000 from the Joyce
Foundation to fund the national expansion of their "Lights On!"
program, in which police officers stopping cars for broken head-
lights, tail lights, brake lights or turn signals can offer vouchers for
for free repairs. In this way, low-income people can save the few
hundred dollars that can undermine fragile economic security.
Congratulations to our friends at MicroGrants!
Recycle: Please use the labeled receptacles for compost, paper,
glass, plastic, cans, waste and cups. By doing so we will be eco-
logically responsible and a big help to our maintenance staff as
well. Thank you.
Cabaret Financial Report: The 24th annual SJA Cabaret week-
end produced a net profit of $93,300 which helps to support the
work of our parish including over 90 ministries and programs.
Cabaret is richly blessed by the talent of the finest musicians in
our area along with the dedication of a large number of volunteers
and the decades of loyalty from a the greatest audience. Thank
you to Cabaret co-chairs, Paul and Lynn Hempe’s and the Caba-
ret Committee that worked so long and hard to make Cabaret a
great success!! Mark your calendars for next year, October 4, 5
and 6,when we will celebrate 25 years of the Cabaret!

A Question for this Season: Our SJA CARE Committee distrib-
utes money from our Outreach Fund to households in need of
emergency financial assistance for housing or utility costs. At our
last meeting, Cynthia Bailey Manns, SJA director of Adult Learn-
ing, asked us to reflect on several questions that we believe are
important to all who seek to be of service (particularly at holiday
time): What words do we use to describe ourselves as volun-
teers? How do we describe the people we serve, and how would
they describe us? How do our power and privilege impact our
encounters as volunteers? We know that an encounter of mutual
respect and dignity can strengthen the bonds of community -
thank you, Cynthia, for lifting up our awareness of this potential.
