OP-95-163

AREA 'B*

GEOLOGY: AREA 'B'

In Marsh Twp., at the east end of the South Bay of Ash Lake, the area is greenstone, consisting of amphibolite/mafic metavolcanics, trending approx. 280 -300 . In the area under investigation an iron formation runs 280 from the E boundary of Marsh Twp. to the Missinabi Creek. Along this structure are occurrences of magnetite, ilmenite, and pyrite. It has been referred to as a Titaniferous magnetic zone. (G. Bennett, 1978 OGS Report 1972. Geology of the Crooked Lake Area.)

There is a low percentage of outcrop in this area but the Beep mat helped to locate buried outcrops, and subsequently the locations of pits and trenches.

Most rock, when located, seemed to be amphibolite with diabase and gabbro to the south. On the lineament at areas considered to be the lost pits, there is magnetite, in some locations banded with qtz, and sulfides to 10**b. There was some hornblende schist and in a few small locations serecite schist.

Associated with the Trench area and the Pit 250 m to the west, is a granite or felsic porphyry.

On the west side of the work area there is an interpolated diabase dike. The area immediately north of the work area includes a narrow zone of the granitoid related to the Ash Lake Pluton. Approximately 1.5 km to the south of the pits and trenches is the granite that is the same type that includes the Renabie mine and the numerous small gold occurrences of Brackin Twp. (Missanabi Batholith).

More pits were located on the N-Side of a large high ground area at the edge of

a swamp about 75 m to the West of the Trench. These were associated with or in an Iron

Formation, trendingm 3000 . Visible sulfides to

AREA 'B'

AREA DESCRIPTION. LOCATION AND ACCESS:

The location of Area 'B' is in Marsh Twp. 70 km NE of Wawa and 6 km. to the SW of Area 'A'. The area is just to the north of the east end of Ash Lake.

There are no roads to Ash Lake at the present time and access in 1994 was by bush plane from Hawk Lake (Hawk Junction) 10 km E of Wawa. Two other possible routes are as follows:(1) To follow the Missanabi Creek from Crooked Lake as indicated into the North East arm of Ash Lake. In 1992, the creek required a rugged portage near Crooked Lake and with supplies for several weeks, a car battery for the Beep Mat and samples would be difficult.(2) Cut a trail from Crooked Lake 1500 m to the worksite. This too would be time-consuming and difficult considering the nature of the bush.

The local terrain is gently rolling with two low-lying occasional swampy areas in the area of the small 'lake' on the E. side and in the norther part of the grid. The bush is very tangled and dense in the complete area with tag alders in most of the work area. Trees are mostly poplar, birch and spruce.

Our base camp was located at the extreme E. end of the south bay of Ash Lake at what appears to be a former fishing camp with the only sandy beach in the area. There was part of a submerged dock crib at this site which could be a hazard to aircraft floats. The shoreline was thick with trees and vegetation, difficult for going ashore. The creek to the small lake E of the pits and trench was navigable to the first beaver dam.

AREA 4A'

Reasons and Rationale for this OPAP Project

l. Factual: (Au)

1. Resampling the shear zone at MF07 resulted in an Assay for MF07A of 333 ppb Au. One of the four small parallel shear zones nearby indicated 15 ppb Au. and there were anomalous results for Cu (to 51 ppm), Zn (to 80 ppm), Mo (13 ppm), Ag (0.5 ppm); Ba (146 ppm) and Pb (8 ppm).

2. 60 m N. of MF07 at the outcrop located by Beep mat and stripped, Samples 31-38 indicated some areas of felsic sills/dikes, banding with magnetite and brecciations. Assays indicated Cu (to 389 ppm), Zn (222 ppm), Ni (111 ppm), Te (25 ppm).

3. Anomalous results for 'pathfinder' elements include for Area 'A' Te (12 ppm), Ba (143 ppm), Cr (159 ppm) as well as local Cu, Zn and Ni mentioned above.

4. Area 'A' is located 6-8 km from the Renabie Mine.

5. Au occurs in all rock types of the area.

6. Au assays in rock samples and soil samples from 1175 m to 2000 m NE of MF07 suggest a re-evaluation of the gold occurrence geometry in this area. Assays range from 10-35 ppb Au.

7. "Any values greater than 5 ppb are considered potentially significant in of exploration for gold mineralization via rock geochemistry " (Wolfe,

1976)

Page 12: *gx MARSH TWP. (ASH LAK.^) · Personal information on this form is obtained under the authority of the Ontario Mineral Exploration Act, R.S.O. 1990. sections 2. 3 and 4 and the Ontario

8. Area 'A' is on strike with the Au occurrences in the McEwen Lake and Baltimore Lake Deformation Zones (MLDZ, BLDZ) approx. 5 km to the N.W.

Reasons and Rationale for this OPAP Project

II Theoretical (Au)

Description of Mines and Prospects

1. "The gold-quartz veins and mineralized shear zones are not in a continuous line but rather en echelon. However, a few gold-quartz veins lie outside of the margins of the belt.

Throughout the world pre-Cambrian gold ores are generally associated with the end-products of batholithic masses. To be of commercial value, these late mineralizations by oxides, sulfides and native metal such as gold, must be concentrated in favourable geological structures, such as fault fissures or zones of intense shearing.

As a result ... of studies of gold deposits in the various mining camps, it has been found that the vicinity of small masses of granite rocks and their associated porphyries is the most favourable place in which to expect a gold deposit. The apparent reason is that the smaller bosses are protuberances on the broad surface of the granite below and that the ore- bearing solutions have a tendency to rise under pressure to these higher peaks in the batholith.

Following up this argument, it is better to have very small areas of acid intrusives showing through the batholith cover, since the ore deposits formed about these intrusive plugs are mainly collected near their crests and in the roof rocks. With too deep an erosion, as shown by the broadening of the area of acid rocks, the ores are lost when the roof rocks are worn off."

Page 13: *gx MARSH TWP. (ASH LAK.^) · Personal information on this form is obtained under the authority of the Ontario Mineral Exploration Act, R.S.O. 1990. sections 2. 3 and 4 and the Ontario

36th Annual Report of the O. D. M., vol. xxxvi part II, 1927 Michipicoten Gold Area, District of Algoma J. L. Gledhill pp. 1 -49

2. If Au is present, as indicated by rock and soil samples SW of 'Dove Lake' a Beep Mat survey could improve the over-all picture of Au occurrence re: location and orientation. As noted in the NOEGTS Report 72, the 'Rock Ridge' Classification could be quite favourable for a Beep Mat survey in this area.
