Road to the Finals: The G-Braves won 11 of their final 20 games, including a “winner-take-all” season finale at Charlotte (6-2 on 9/5), to claim the first International League South Division championship in Gwinnett history. Despite posting the lowest winning percentage of a full-season division winner in MiLB history (.455), Gwinnett defeated 10-time Governors’ Cup champion Columbus 3-1 in the best-of-five Semifinals. Vs. Scranton/WB: Gwinnett went 1-6 in seven games vs. the RailRiders during the 2016 regular season, going 0-4 at home and 1-2 on the road. Since 2009, the G-Braves are 23-38 (.377) in 61 regular-season games vs. Scranton/WB, as well as 2-5 in the postseason (lost IL Semifinals to SWB Yankees 1-3 in 2009). Historical Precedence: Trailing the best-of-five series 2-1, the G-Braves must now win both remaining games to earn the team’s first Governors’ Cup title since moving to Lawrenceville. The last Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A club to appear in the Governors’ Cup Championship Series – the 2007 Richmond Braves – overcame a similar scenario to win it all. Richmond won Game 1 vs. Durham (4-2) before losing Game 2 (5-1) and Game 3 (3-2)…a rain-out forced a doubleheader on 9/15/07 at The Diamond, and the R-Braves won both ends (6-2 and 7-2) over the Bulls to claim the Cup. G-Braves Blanked in Game 3: The G-Braves managed just five hits in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in Game 3 of the Governors’ Cup Championship Series last night at Coolray Field. RHP Brady Lail (W, 1-0) allowed three hits, walked none and struck out five over 6.1 IP, LHP Dietrich Enns (H, 1) yielded two hits and struck out three over 1.1 IP, and RHP J.R. Graham (S, 1) walked one and struck out two over 1.1 IP for the RailRiders. Gwinnett’s only extra-base hit came from SS Reid Brignac (1-for-3, 2B), who doubled off Lail to lead off the fifth inning. Scranton built an early 3-0 lead against RHP Tyrell Jenkins (L, 0-1), who gave up RBI singles to Chris Parmelee and Kyle Higashioka in the first inning and a solo home run to Pete Kozma in the second inning. Jenkins exited after 5.0 IP (4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 6 SO), and RHP Stephen Janas (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 SO) and LHP Brian Moran (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 SO) each turned in scoreless outings in relief. Kaz in the Clutch: Sean Kazmar Jr. tallied his IL-leading eighth RBI of the playoffs in Game 2 on Wednesday in Scranton (1-for-3, 2B, RBI). He’s fourth among IL playoff leaders in batting (.407) and also ranks in homers (1 st , 3), extra-base hits (1 st , 5), slugging percentage (1 st , .815), hits (T-1 st , 11), runs scored (T-1 st , 6) and doubles (T-2 nd , 2). On 9/10 vs. Columbus, Kazmar Jr. matched the Gwinnett playoff record for hits in a game with four (4-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI), equaling the mark set by Mel Rojas Jr. a night prior on 9/9 vs. Columbus (4-for-5, 2B, 3B, 3 R, 2 RBI). Musty is Mashing: Ronnier Mustelier has reached base safely in six of seven playoff games (.310, 9-for-29, 5 R, 2 RBI) after finishing the regular season on a 14-game on-base streak. He batted .302 (16-for-53, 5 2B, 2 HR, 9 R, 8 RBI) on the 14-game streak from 8/21-9/5, including a nine-game hitting streak from 8/21-8/31 (.378, 14-for-37, 4 2B, 2 HR, 7 R, 8 RBI). During the regular season, Mustelier ranked among IL leaders in lowest TPA/SO ratio (1 st , 9.57) and batting (13 th , .291). Boni is Bueno: Including the playoffs, Emilio Bonifacio has notched 20 multi-hit efforts over his last 38 games dating back to 8/4, batting .364 (55-for-151, 4 2B, 4 3B, 25 R, 15 RBI, 12 SB) in that span. Bonifacio ranked eighth in the IL in batting during the regular season (.298), and was also among IL leaders in stolen bases (1 st , 37 SB, 37-for-46, 80.4%) and triples (T-10 th , 5)…he’s the third G-Brave to lead the IL in steals (Matt Young, 39 SB in 2010, Luis Durango, 46 SB in 2012). Electrifying Ellis: With 6.0 no-hit innings on Wednesday, RHP Chris Ellis is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER in 13.0 IP), a .070 BAA (3-for-43) and two quality starts in two playoff outings. Atlanta’s No. 16 prospect according to MLB.com, Ellis went 4-7 with a 6.52 ERA (49 ER in 67.2 IP) and no quality starts over 15 outings with Gwinnett during the regular season, his Triple-A debut.
