You are invited to become a part of iLIVE – Investigating Life In Various Environments.

We are developing this as a national initiative in biodiversity to engage Head Start parents and staff in keeping the spirit and work of George Washington Carver alive in our children and in our communities.

Our goal is to recruit Head Start parents, teachers, and their children here in Baltimore and across the country to participate in developing and sharing information about the plant, animal and human life in the environments around their centers and homes.

The first major iLIVE STEAM InVenTure will focus on tracking the changes in plants, animals and people through the fall, winter, and spring seasons across the country.

Seasonal changes affect all life. Let’s investigate how they are alike and different in Baltimore, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, etc. . .

STEAM Classrooms are designed to work with our partner teachers who are highly interested in an integrated approach to STEAM education.

Digital STEAM Teams are our parents and partnership staff using digital technology to communicate about STEAM learning and school-readiness skills.

Granni Griot is our storyteller who helps parents develop their children’s literacy skills by time traveling George Washington Carver’s Legacy Trails.

Children Are Natural

Inventors and Explorers“Kids are natural inventors since they don’t

know what can’t be done.  Let kids have fun

thinking of inventions and don’t discourage

any of their ideas.  Even if their ideas are

wild, there might be a germ of a good idea

within the wild idea.”

LEARNING DOMAINS

Logic & Reasoning is an early learning domain (area) essential for a child’s school readiness development and success in life.

Logic & Reasoning is the ability to

find appropriate solutions to problems.

Inventing builds a child’s logic and reasoning skills. When children invent they are learning to recognize,

understand, and analyze a problem. Children use their imagination, knowledge and experiences to find solutions to problems.

A key technique to use for developing

children’s logic and reasoning skills is simulation –– that’s the use of

symbols or objects to represent something else, such as, when children:

1. Use drawings, movement, and three-dimensional objects to represent people, places, or things; or,

2. Pretend play and act out roles; and

3. Recognize the differences between fantasy situations and reality.

invention is a creative process that produces something new or unique.

adventure is an exciting or very unusual experience. InVenTure
