For pupils to become aware of healthy and unhealthy foods.

Unhealthy foods

Some foods are called unhealthy foods or junk foods. Some unhealthy/junk foods are corn curls, chocolates, sweets, cheese balls and biscuits.

Junk foods do not help us to grow healthy.

Some foods are called healthy food because they make our body strong and healthy. Healthy foods are foods that provide our bodies with nutrients. Some examples of healthy foods are foods that are eaten from the six (6) food groups.

For pupils to become aware of health-conscious practices as it relates to fruit and vegetable consumption.

We cook foods to make them soft and tasty. We must not overcook vegetables for it will lose some if not all of its nutrients that can keep our bodies healthy

9 Our Nation -Celebration in Guyana Commonwealth Day

For pupils to develop an appreciation for Commonwealth Day

Commonwealth Day is observed on the second Monday in March each year. This is not a national holiday.

There are 54 Commonwealth countries. Some activities to celebrate this day are stamp collection. Guyana became a member of the Commonwealth in 1966 on attaining its independence. Commonwealth countries regard Queen Elizabeth II as the symbol of the association and as such, the head of the Commonwealth.

Good Friday is a religious holiday observed by Christians. Jesus Christ was crucified and put on a cross to die for our sins. Easter is the time Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is usually observed at the end of Lent.

Easter is a Christian joyous festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is observed the Sunday after Good Friday.

13 The Weather -Activities done during the weather conditions

For pupils to become aware of the activities done during the weather conditions

There are four main types of weather conditions in Guyana. These are rainy, sunny, windy and cloudy. Different types of weather have uses. The farmers like rain and sun for their crops. The rainy weather is good for when the farmers are sowing their seeds, e.g. paddy. The farmers need sunny weather to reap their crops. We need sunny weather to dry our clothes and windy weather to fly our kites during Easter celebrations.

17 Our Nation -Celebration in Guyana Phagwah

For pupils to develop an appreciation for Phagwah.

Phagwah is a religious holiday observed by the Hindus. Most Guyanese celebrate this holiday with fun. This festival is celebrated in Guyana just after the full moon is seen in March. It celebrates the triumph of good over evil and marks the first day of spring. Hindus celebrate this religious festival of colours by burning Holi, sprinkling water and abeer on each other.
