MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING

Sheep and Goat Weigh-In, April 23

LOCAL NEWS

All livestock can be identified in 4-H online under the animals tab. If you are unable to do it online, forms are available from your club leader and at the Extension Office.

4-H’ers planning to exhibits beef, swine, sheep, goats, horse & pony, dog, poultry, rabbits or pets identify online or by form by May 15 to be eligible to exhibit at the fair. Meat rabbits and roaster and broiler classes of poultry must be identified by August 1.

If you have never logged into iowa.4honline.com (no www.) before, click the ‘I forgot my pass-word’ and enter the email

address given to the office. This will email you a temporary password to get you in the system. When logged into 4hOnline,

there will be an ‘edit’ button. This will log you into your child’s profile where you

can edit what projects they are enrolled in or identify animals.

If you have difficulty with the 4honline program, a help sheet can be found at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders or contact Mollie.

If you plan to show swine at the 2016 Guthrie County Fair, you need to bring your pigs to weigh-in on Saturday, April 23 between

8:30 and 10 a.m. at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds.

All pigs must be weighed in. Each 4-H’er can weigh and identify up to a maximum of 15 pigs. The cost for each ear tag is $2, pay-

able at weigh-in. Any pig at or under the weigh limit (52 pounds) is eligible to be a derby pig at the county fair.

Swine can be weighed at your home if you prefer. A home visit costs $20 per family. Contact the Extension Office to schedule

your home visit.

State Fair swine exhibitors have two options for swine to be identified for the Iowa State Fair.

1. Bring your pigs to the county weigh-in where you will fill out the identification form and pigs will receive the DNA tags. A

variation of this option would be to pay for a home visit to have the tagging done.

2. 4-H Family comes to the county office for DNA tags, tagger, and envelopes. 4-H’ers returns home and tags each pig, puts

DNA sample tag numbers on back of DNA envelope, 4-H’er and parent/guardian signs and seals the DNA envelope and re-

turns tagger and the DNA envelopes to the county office before May 10. (Tagger must be returned as soon as finished tag-

ging.)

State Fair swine tags are $10. By May 15, 4-H’er logs into 4honline to verify the information on each pig is complete and correct; if

the 4-H’er does not verify, the information will stand as is.

Weigh-In will take place at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds from 8:30—10 a.m. on April 23. Tags cost $2 each. If you plan to show sheep

or goats at Ak-Sar-Ben the cost is $5 for the DNA testing. If you plan to show at the Iowa State Fair the cost is $5 for the retinal imaging.

MAY 15th DEADLINE!

STATE 4-H NEWS

2016 Iowa Youth Conference

Every June, almost 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities.

If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show!

If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP track! There are also workshop tracks that span all 3 days for certain topics if you'd like to study something in more depth. Or, you can choose different workshops each day to get more variety while you're on campus.

If you'd like to be part of the team to capture the Conference in photos, join our Iowa 4-H Youth Camera Corps, and bring your camera. We're doing things a little differently this year and you'll get to learn photo skills and put them to work through the workshop series.

Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference!

Iowa 4-H Youth Conference 2016 Registration is now open. You can reg-ister between now and June 1 for the regular registration cost of $175. Be-tween June 2 and June 10 the rate goes up to $200. inspirational and educational newsletter each month. Below is a

4-H'ers investing in 4-H'ers. This is the essence of the 4-H'ers for

4-H Campaign, sponsored each year by the State 4-H Council. The

campaign raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members

throughout the state. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the

Iowa 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign. Last year, we exceeded our goal

and raised over $30,000. We want to continue that growth and

have set our goal for this year at $31,000.00 with a suggested

$3.00 per member donation. We also want every county in Iowa

to participate! YOU can help grow 4-H in Iowa!
