ThisisYarlung’sfirstrecordingofaMahlersymphony.Notonlywasthisadreamofmine,asaproducer,butthiscollaborationbetweenMaestroGerardSchwarzandTheColburnOrchestraepitomizesthedreamsoftwotitans.
JerrySchwarzisjustlyfamousforhisnewmusicandcreativeprogrammingatthevariousorchestrashehasdirectedaroundtheworld.ButMahlerisspecialtoJerry,asyouwillhearonthisdisc.Thismusiclivesinhisbloodandinhisbrain.AndwhileJerryconductsthemajorprofessionalorchestrasoftheworld,hededicatesmuchofhistimetohelpingyoungmusiciansachievetheirdreams.CollaboratingandguestconductingwithTheColburnOrchestraorTheJuilliardOrchestra,orworkingwithhisstudentsattheEasternMusicFestivalinNorthCarolinagivestheseyoungmusiciansexperiencewithaMaestrowhohasrecordedandperformedextensivelywithorchestrasallovertheworld.1
Theother titantowhomIrefer,RichardColburn,dreamedofbuildingaconservatoryorchestraasfineasanyorchestraontheplanet.Inveryfewyears,musicdirectorandprincipalconductorMaestroYehudaGiladnurturedandshapedthissymphonyorchestraintoaflexibleensembleenthusiasticallysupportedbyloyalaudiences.Concertgoersand press celebrateThe ColburnOrchestra for the quality of its performances andYehuda’s creative leadership.MaestroSchwarzdescribesTheColburnOrchestraas“withoutquestion,amongthefinestorchestrasintheworld.”JerryfeelsathomeatTheColburnSchoolandthemusiciansandfacultyeagerlyawaithisvisits.

This isYarlung’s thirdreleasewithTheColburnOrchestra.Firstcame If You Love For Beautywithmezzo-sopranoSashaCooke,conductedbyYehudaGilad.ShortlythereafterfollowedSmoke & Mirrors: Vanish,apercussionalbumincludingTakemitsu’s concertoFrom Me Flows What You Call Time, also conducted byGerard Schwarz. I knewJerryonly indirectlybefore rehearsals for theMahlerperformance. I knewhim throughhis son Julianwho is anaccomplished‘cellistandwhowasastudentatTheColburnSchool,andfromhislongtenureasMusicDirectoroftheLosAngelesChamberOrchestra.LikethelegendarySirNevilleMarrinerwithwhomYarlunghasworkedonseveralrecordings, Jerryhas recordedextensively2andknowsexactlyhowtohelphis team(theorchestraandrecordingengineers)achievehisvision.
IthadbeenafewyearssinceJerrymadearecordingonanalogtapeandhewelcomedthebenefitsandlimitationsgoodnaturedly.Thisisarecordingofaliveconcertperformance.Moreover,thisisalongsymphonyandweneededtoplantimetochangereelsoftapeduringtheconcert.JerryandIwentthroughthescoreandhetoldmeexactlyhowmanyminutes“Jerry’sMahler5”tookforeachmovement.Each2,500footreeloftapeholds33minutesofmusicat15inchespersecond.JerryfeaturedJohannaYarbrough,ourFrenchhornsoloistinthethirdmovement,sowewereabletochangereelswhileshemovedtothefrontoftheorchestraandback,enablingustorecordthefirstandsecondmovementsononereel,thethirdmovementonasecond,andthefourthandfifthmovementsonathirdreeloftape.
Loversofclassical recordingsdebate themeritsof liveconcertversus studio recordings.Onemustweigh thedrawbacksofcoughingandotheraudiencenoisesaswellasmistakesinaliveperformanceagainstthelessauthenticperfectionofanalbummade in thehospital-likeenvironmentof the recording studio. Recordinga liveconcertchallengesthemusiciansandtherecordingteaminmanyways.Thereareindeedaudiencenoises.Analogtapecanbreak.Theelectricityinthehallcangooff(asithasalreadydonetwiceinYarlung’syounglife).Musicianscanmakemistakes.Allofthiscanbefixedinastudiorecording. Butifonehastheprivilegetoworkwithmusiciansandconductorofthiscaliber,therisksareworthitforthelivingmusicconveyedinarealperformancebyartistsoffleshandbloodandspirit.
2MaestroSchwarzrecordedoveronehundredalbumswithSeattleSymphonyduringhis26-yeartenurewiththeorchestraandhasrecordedanotherfortyorfiftywithotherorchestras,includingtwosofarwithTheColburnOrchestraandYarlungRecords.
