GURIT: OFFICIAL COMPOSITE MATERIALS SUPPLIER OF THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE 2014/5Gurit composite materials will be used for the repair and maintenance of the VOR 65 fleet during one of the world's toughest sailing events. With 11 ports, 38,739 nautical miles to be covered, it really does not get tougher than this.

LA FERRARI – FERRARI’S MOST AMBITIOUS PROJECT FEATURING GURIT’S CLASS-A CBS SYSTEMLaFerrari represents Ferrari’s most ambitious project yet; to push the boundaries of technology on a road car, drawing together the finest expression of the marque’s technical capabilities in both GT and Formula 1 engineering. Through close cooperation between Gurit and Ferrari, Gurit’s Class-A CBS system was selected for the front and rear fenders of this prestigious vehicle.

WRIGHTBUS ‘NEW BUS FOR LONDON’During 2008, the newly elected Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, introduced a new double-decker bus for London (NBfL). The rear end of the bus exterior (behind the rear wheels) and the hop-on, hop-off platform are built with Gurit’s composite materials. Gurit manufactured the prototype parts for durability and fatigue testing and has now moved into series production.

OUT OF THE STRONG CAME FORTH SWEETNESSOur brief from Derwent was simple, to propose an artwork for the atrium of the Angel Building that might also provide an opportunity for public seating and interaction. The piece is made from carbon fibre which is both very strong and lightweight. The piece is 22 metres high and narrows to 100mm diameter at the midpoint, and 25mm at the tip.

SKYe SH09 – NEW HELICOPTER CONCEPT USING COMPOSITE MATERIALSOn November 28, 2013, the prototype of an entirely new helicopter concept saw its official roll-out in Switzerland. SKYe SH09 immediately met with great interest. Rethinking helicopters required a novel approach to building materials, resulting in the SKYe SH09 almost entirely built using composite materials, including key prepreg supplier, Gurit.

CARKEEK 60 ‘ICHI BAN’ NEXT GENERATION 60’ RACE BOATIchi Ban is the next generation of sleek new 60’ racing boat, built by Premier Composite Technologies (PCT), and designed by Shaun Carkeek, this C60 is a new breed of ultra-light displacement race boat. Gurit were able to call on over 30 years of experience with engineering of cutting edge race boats to get a head start in the engineering of the boat, and combined this with working closely with the design and build team to develop the structure of this boat.

AL HARAMAIN HIGH SPEED RAIL – COMPOSITE STATION ROOFSThe Haramain High Speed Rail project is a new high speed rail line in Saudi Arabia, running between the holy cities of Makkah and Medinah. Gurit and Premier Composite Technologies worked closely with the design team during the concept and tender design stages of the roof to develop the concept of using FRP panels in the station roof. The weight of the composite is approximately 720 tonnes, which makes the station roof one of the most extensive uses of advanced composites in the architectural industry.

‘DRAGON WINGS’ LIFTING BRIDGE OVER RHYL HARBOURGurit was contracted to carry out the detailed engineering of the bridge decks. The decks are very slender, partially for aesthetic reasons, but also to ensure that the inshore lifeboat would have sufficient headroom to pass under the lowered bridge at all tide levels. Gurit made extensive use of finite element analysis to carry out transient dynamic analysis of the bridge.

VSKCORRINALDI CARBON FIBRE MOTOR BIKE BODY KITSThe exclusive motor bike body kits manufactured by Vskcorrinaldi are a great example of visual carbon fibre giving their motor bikes a completely new look. Vskcorrinaldi relies on Gurit’s Ampreg 21, an epoxy wet laminating system with non-pigmented resin and hardeners, and SP 115, a clear epoxy wet laminating system that gives the final structure a characteristic, transparent violet-blue glow.

MAKKAH CLOCK TOWER The central tower of the Abraj-al Bait development in Makkah, KSA, features FRP composite materials and structural engineering Gurit. Gurit worked closely with the tower top designers, SL-Rasch (Stuttgart, Germany), to carry out the structural engineering of the composite tower top cladding, clock hands, and the 23m diameter crescent, a self-supportive FRP composite structure which is located at the top of the building.

HETARIOS – THE PANAMAX KETCH PROJECTFor four years Gurit worked with Baltic Yachts on the Panamax Ketch project. This included the supply of composite materials and a large structural engineering design consultancy project. It is the largest and most challenging project ever undertaken by all those involved. The boat, named “Hetairos”, was launched in May 2011, and handed over in July 2011
