At the ORPA Annual Meeting on Nov. 8, members will vote for trustees to serve three-year terms. The following are biographies for the nominees.

2014 ORPA Trustee Nominees

Newt EngleMarling “Newt” Engle; born and raised on a farm in Perry Township near Canton, Ohio and graduated from Perry High School. Joining the University of Akron Varsity Rifle Team in the fall of 1974, Newt accepted the position as the Head Rifle Coach in 1977. Over the past near-ly 40 years, Coach Engle has had the opportunity to work with hundreds of exceptional ath-letes who have helped the team gain national rankings as high as #10, as well as several league championships. In 2009 The University of Akron was proud to have Jenna Compton win the NCAA National Air Rifle Championship. Guided by Coach Engle the team has consistently

been ranked as one of the top 20 teams in the nation for many years. In the spring of 2006, Newt was awarded the National Rifle Association's Outstanding Service to Collegiate Shooting Sports award. In the fall of 2007 Newt was appointed as one of the six member NCAA rifle committee charged with overseeing collegiate competition in the US. Newt was the chairman of the committee for his last two years. In 2011 the NCAA appointed Newt as the Secretary-Rules Interpreter for the rifle committee. In 2010 Newt was appointed to the prestigious NRA Smallbore Rifle Committee. Newt has also been introduced to the sport of Olympic pistol by assisting ORPA trustee Fred Totts in starting the first ever collegiate pistol club at The University of Akron. In addition to his collegiate duties, Coach Engle is very proud of his chance to work with OPRA air gun director, Chuck Miller which has resulted in ORPA Three-Position Air Rifle teams bringing several national championships back to ORPA and Ohio.

The late 70’s was a busy time for Newt. He joined The University of Akron Police Department in 1979 where he has worked his way up through the ranks to the posi-tion as Assistant Chief of Police where he retired from in 2011. Also in 1979, Newt married his lifelong mate, Sandy Engle who according to Newt has to be “One of the most understanding wives in the world”. The early 80’s saw Newt finish his associates degree in criminal justice and his bachelors degree in political science, as well as expanding his family to include daughters An-gela and April. Much to the pleasure of Coach Engle, daughters Angela and April have not only taken up the Olympic Sport of Rifle, but have done so in award win-ning fashion. Angela and April competed as members of the Ashland Eagles Junior Rifle Club and continued as members of The University of Akron rifle team.

Being very involved in the Olympic Sport of Rifle and all facets of Police Firearms Training, Newt has added an important viewpoint to the ORPA Board of Trust-ees.

Getting Out and About Can Be Fun! Have you ever felt like you were in a rut with your cowboy action shoot-ing? Tired of looking at the same old bushy faces? Seen the same sce-narios one too many times? Is that’s what’s troubling you Bunkie? Well, then try getting out and about and shoot at a different club, it can be fun.

So far this year I’ve had the oppor-tunity to shoot at several different venues including the Ohio State Championship held in Piqua where Buckshot Jones, with the help of Mean Gun Mark and Boaz, have created a 12 stage cowboy action competition village.

Don’t forget that Mean Gun, Boaz and Buckshot Jones will be hosting the second Ohio State Wild Bunch match this year. It is going to be one of the four major matches to be held in Ohio this year and will be on their range October 25th and 26th.

Another great shoot is with the Greene County Cowboys at their home range located at the Greene County Fish and Wildlife grounds in Xenia Ohio. John Henry Love-less and his compatriots Ruger Ray and Loco Leadslinger have created a six-stage cowboy shooting village as well. They usually shoot a six-stage match on the first Sunday of every month and what’s really nice is that

the awards are held in their spacious clubhouse that offers a pay-as-you-go kitchen. To learn more about them and to confirm their schedule can be found at www.gcfng.com.

The Wilmington Rough Riders have their matches on the third Satur-day of every month, and they shoot six stages minimum at every meet. They are located on the grounds of the Clinton County Farmers and Sportsmen Association range in Wilmington, Ohio. I was struck by the passion of SASS Regulator Coy-ote Kid Mike for organizing and promoting this shoot. Although it is comprised of only three stages, each stage is shot twice with a different scenario at each stage. So, over the course of shooting six stages you never see the same scenario twice. Pretty cool huh? and according to “Mike” there are plans to modify and expand the cowboy shooting area. For more info on what’s going on there, check out their web page at

www.ccfsa.com/SASS.html

I had a great time at a Wild Bunch match earlier this year at the Mi-ami Rifle and Pistol Club in Batavia Ohio. The Stone Lick Regulators head honcho, Carson, besides Wild Bunch events, offers a five-stage SASS shoot. Each scenario features an array of situations, some based on famous historical incidents or movies scenes in which the shooter tests their mettle against challenging steel targets. For more information check out their web site at www.mi-amirifle-pistol.org/cowboy_action.

By the time you read this, the Grand-daddy of major events in Ohio will have been history - the infamous Guns of August which is the Mideast Regional held the second weekend of August annually on the grounds of the Middletown Sportsman’s club in Middletown. Ohio. This year we had 28 ORPA members partake and quite a few took home trophies.

At Camp Perry this year, competi-tion proved to be harder than usual as it was the year for the Full-bore World Championship warm up to be fired this year at Camp Perry as a precursor to the World Champion-ships to be held next year at Camp Perry, 2015. This meant that teams from around the world gathered at Camp Perry this year to not only fire in the Full-bore match that was to be fired at the conclusion of the Long range Championships, but also to compete in the individual as well as the team matches.

ORPA entered three teams this year in the Roumanian and Herrick Tro-phy 1000-yard team Long Range National Championship Matches and three teams in the Palma Team Match. These team matches are open to Service, Match and Palma rifle shooters. The ORPA Gold and Silver teams were entered into the match rifle category and the ORPA Service Gold team was entered in the service rifle category. In the Pal-ma team match, ORPA Gold and Sil-ver were entered into the Palma rifle division. ORPA Service Gold was entered in the service rifle division. The Roumanian team match for the match rifle shooters is fired typically with a scope mounted to the match rifle. The Herrick team match on the other hand is fired with iron sights. The Palma team match is fired with a rifle chambered for a 308 caliber bullet and the shooter using iron sights. The service rifle shooters for the Roumanian, Herrick and Palma team matches at last use only iron sights for all three matches. There is a rather new third category for the

Palma team match that allows the use of scoped rifles in the any/any division, for which those interested ORPA members who are Ohio State residents are welcome to send a 2015 ORPA team application to me for this new team match.

As typical in past years, the ORPA service rifle team in the preliminary standings for the Herrick Trophy team match posted the ORPA Gold service rifle team was in first place in the State Association category. In the final results, ORPA Gold service team came in third overall in the combined service rifle team division with the Army Reserve Rifle team and USMC taking first and second place. Firing members of the ORPA Gold service rifle team were Roger Wedge, Ray Frank, Ken Strohm and Ed Shank (team captain). On the second day of team competition, the Roumanian team match was fired and was a duplicate of what hap-pened in the previous day during the Herrick match with ORPA again in third place overall behind the Army Reserve Rifle team and the USMC service rifle team. The Army Reserve team used a mix of M1A/M14 and AR-10 rifles, while the USMC team used AR-10’s.

The ORPA Gold Team firing in the Roumanian team match took Second place in the Match rifle di-vision, High Master Class in the State association category. Team members were Jeffery Graham, Tim Kerns, Matt Kellgreen and Ed Eichler (team captain). Again firing in the Herrick match ORPA Gold took second place in the match rifle

division, High Master Class in the state association category.

The ORPA Silver team firing in the Roumanian team match took First place in the match rifle division, Master Class in the Open club cat-egory. Although firing as a State As-sociation team, NRA competitions put ORPA Silver, as well as some military teams in the Open club cat-egory. However, ORPA Silver did take first place. Team members were Charles Rowe, Thomas Colton, Mike Fortune and Kimberly Rowe (team captain). The ORPA Silver team fir-ing in the Herrick match took first place in the match rifle division, Master Class in the combined State association and open club category. Team members were Charles Rowe, Thomas Colton, Mike Fortune and Kimberly Rowe (team captain ).

In the Palma team match, ORPA had three teams. Two Palma teams ORPA Gold and Silver and one ser-vice rifle team, ORPA Gold Service. In the Palma team match, winner takes all. There are no classes for High master, Master, Expert, etcet-era. Only rifle types are categorized. The Palma rifle, Service Rifle and any rifle/any sight rifle is recognized. The ORPA Gold palma team mem-bers were Terry Paul, Don Schedler, Tim kerns and Ed Eichler (team captain). ORPA Gold placed 21st place of out of a field of 60 teams, which included many of the inter-national shooters firing in teams waiting to fire the follow week of the

Full-Bore matches that they came to Camp Perry for. The ORPA Sil-ver Team placed 25th. ORPA Silver team members were Mike Fortune, Charles Rowe, Kimberly Rowe (team capt.) and Thomas Colton. Keeping in mind that this was the year of the World invitation for the Fullbore matches, our teams fired against the best teams in the world. This invitational brought shooters from countries such as Canada, Australia and Canada. Our ORPA service rifle team placed third overall with the Army Marksmanship Unit and the USMC service rifle teams taking 1st and 2nd place . ORPA service rifle team members were Roger Wedge, Ray Frank, Ken Strohm and Ed Shank (team capt.).

I would like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to shoot on an ORPA team and hope to see you next year. As an Organization, the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association did quite well in the overall scope of the team match standings con-sidering the competition including the influx of the International teams that we competed against. The team matches are always fun and infor-mative. Think about next year to join in on an ORPA team. Half the match fees are paid by ORPA. Again thank you for your interest and in-volvement in this great sport.

Indiv. Long Range National Championships By Long Range Team Coordinator Edward Shank

As with the year of 2012 with In-ternational shooters arriving to shoot the America’s Cup, anoth-er wave of International shoot-ers arrived to shoot the Full-Bore matches which were to conclude the 2014 National Championships at Camp Perry. However, even with the presence of the Interna-tional shooters, the Gallaghers, Michelle and Nancy proved that once again, they are the best. Mi-chelle Gallagher taking first place in winning the Long range Cham-pionship with a total aggregate score of 1096-66X and her mother, Nancy Tompkins one X count be-hind, with a 1096-65X. Third and fourth place winners also scored a 1096 with different X counts. SSG Brandon Green with a 1096-59X and Thomas Colyer who also won the Wimbledon, with a 1096-56X. In the Canadian Cup, Nancy Tompkins won first place with a 698-41X, Michelle Gallagher with a 498-40X and Thomas Colyer with a 698-39X. Same score with 1X between the three of them. Guess at the top, X count does re-ally matter.

The Long-Range Championship, (match 500), is a total aggregate of all individual matches fired in four days of 1000-yard competition in-cluding the Palma match, which is fired at 800,900 and 1000 yards. Although due to a torrential rain-fall that delayed the match for 4 hours, the Palma match was short-ened to only an 800 and 1000 yard match. Due to time restrictions, the 900 yard portion was not fired. The rain did send some shooters back to their motels in which this

retreat to a dry room pretty much made them forfeit 450 points or in this case, 300 points due to the re-moval of the 900 yard portion that is usually fired in the match. The de-letion of the 900 yard portion of the Palma match also put some shoot-ers at a disadvantage by removing the 900 yard string if these shooters hoped to cash in on easier points to record than those fired at the 1000 yard line, were everything changes.

The Long Range Championship is divided into four days of shooting with the shooter’s option to fire their choice of rifle and type of sight. Typ-ically the rifles used are the Palma, Service and match rifle with a cal-iber of other than 30 caliber using either iron or a scope. Choosing the type of rifle and sight you use de-pends on which trophy match you decide to compete in. These individ-ual matches are grouped in rifle and sight type so that each competitor are firing the same type of rifle and scope.

The Long-Range Championship ag-gregate is divided by class only, High Master, Master, Expert, Sharpshoot-er and Marksman. The total aggre-gate score for each class is listed from highest score to lowest score only. The type of rifle and scope combina-tion is not categorized. However, the list does indicate the rifle type and sights used. If you have the inclina-tion, you can go through the list and see how you really did against those using the same combination of rifle and sights you used. The Canadian

Cup Trophy scoring is done in the same fashion, except, the first two 1000-yard matches (#511 &#512) are not counted as part of the Ca-nadian Cup total score aggregate. At the conclusion of each day of firing, the shooter with the highest score for each of the 4 relays, fires in a shoot-off to determine who the tro-phy winner of that match is. During the shoot-off, you will see service ri-fles, palma rifles and scoped rifles all on the line competing one last time to see who wins the top spot for the trophy match that they entered. Whether it is the Wimbledon, Farr or Leech cup for example.

In the Individual matches, ORPA did quite well ORPA had some notable results from the line of hard-holders at Camp Perry. Kim-berly Rowe placed 2nd Expert in the Leech match. The leech match is fired with iron sights over a dis-tance of 1000-yards. Charles Rowe fired placed 16th Master in the 300/600 yard aggregate among US and International shooters in the Full-Bore match. ORPA service ri-fle shooters continue to do shine at the 1000-yard line in the service rifle category of the National Long Range Championships. Ken Strohm won a Bronze medal in the Palma match-service rifle division. The Palma match is fired for 15 shots fired for record at 800, 900 and 1000 yards for a total of 450 points. In the Porter Trophy Match, Ed Agle took High senior and 15th place in Master class of the Mustin Trophy match. Edward Shank in the Por-ter match won 2nd High senior and 10th place in the Master class of the Mustin trophy match. The Porter and Farr matches are a service rifle

only match fired at 1000-yards with 20 rounds for record. Roger Wedge using his service rifle won 1st Expert in the Mustin Trophy match and 9th place in Expert class of the Farr Tro-phy match. Ray Frank also did well in the Mustin match by getting 11th place in the Master class. The Mus-tin match is fired with any type of rifle the shooter wishes to use.

The total aggregate score of four days of firing rifles at targets a1000-yards from the shooter during the National Long-Range Champion-ships (match 500) defines the shoot-er’s place among the best shooters in the country and for at least this year, the world. Ed Agle firing his service rifle throughout the course of matches in the Master class of the Long-Range Championship placed 6th. Master among the service ri-fle shooters and first place civilian among the other contestants from the military teams. Edward Shank firing his M1A placed 8th Master and 2nd. Civilian among the list of hard-holders using the service ri-fle. Ray Frank placed in 11th place and 3rd civilian in the Master class of those who fired the service rifle during the four days of the National Long-Range Championships. Rog-er Wedge placed in 9th spot of the Expert class with Allan Wolff in 1st place of the sharpshooter class. What should be noted here is that in the Master class of the long-range championship, those firing the ser-vice rifle, ORPA had three shooters in the top eleven spots and two in the Expert class among the service rifle shooters.

ORPA members who shot match ri-fles also have a reason to be proud.

Robert Johnson won 3rd. place in the expert class firing in the Leech Cup and 9th place expert in the Mustin match. Tim Kerns got 17th place in the Master class of the over-all National long-range Champion-ship. The leech Cup is a 1000-yard match fired with a match rifle using iron sights. Robert Johnson placed 1st Grand Senior and 6th place in the expert class of the total aggregate of the long range championships. Sam Hartsock won 15th place in the Master class of the Andrus Memo-rial match. This match is fired with the palma rifle. Jack Jones firing his scoped rifle took 8th place overall in the Wimbledon trophy match with a 200-11X. As in the upper strato-sphere of this game, he needed one more X to get into the shootoff that would decide the match winner. Showing you how close Jack came to winning this thing, Wimbledon match winner, Thomas Coyler of Tennessee won this match with a 200-12X score and a shootoff score of 100-4X. Dan Altman was the match winner of the Herb “Doc” Aiken trophy with a score of 199-5X.

Long range shooting is most of all, fun. If you are willing, you get to talk to many different people from around the country and some-times the world. All willing to share ideas and tips to improving your score. The best advice one can give is to practice and shoot matches throughout the year. This test your-self and equipment. So get out to the range and shoot some matches. See you next year on an ORPA team.

16Looking to the Future - ORPA Junior Pistol Team

By Team Member Jessica Syme

This year when I climbed out my overstuffed car and set foot on the ground at Camp Perry, I was a little concerned to find out if I would be living at Swamp Perry again. How-ever, when my foot hit the ground, it was solid (I jumped up and down, just to make sure). I would not have lakefront property for the week’s stay in a hut, and I was thrilled. Camp Perry is a very special place, home to a very special competition. This year was no different.

The ORPA Juniors all shot very well, and we had so much fun. Glenn Zimmerman finished as the Junior Champion, with a score of 2535-66x. Elizabeth Buerling was the High Lady Junior, with a score of 2431-42x, she finished 4th amongst the junior competitors. Bryce Tuck-er scored a 2405-39x, earning 5th place in the Junior category. His brother, Brett, also shot very well and scored a 2314-32x, finishing 10th. Robert Delagrange shot a 2196-24x, finishing 14th. I finished right behind Rob, with a 2184-18x. Zoe Gibson competed in the .22 only 2700, earning 9th place with a score of 2314-21x. In addition to the individual achievements, the ORPA Juniors secured another National High Junior Team title with a score of 3239-91x.

We finished the week with the CMP National Trophy Individual Pistol Match and President’s Pistol Match. In the Junior Matches, Glenn won the President’s Junior Pistol Match with a score of 368-11x, and placed 2nd in the National Trophy Junior category, with a score of 265-5x.

Elizabeth finished 7th in the Presi-dent’s Junior Match with a score of 338-2x, and scored 5th in the Na-tional Trophy, Junior match with a score of 255-4x. Bryce finished 10th in the President’s 100 Junior Match with a score of 330-1x, and shot a 245-0x in the National Trophy Indi-vidual Junior match, finishing 9th. I shot a 288-2x in the President’s 100 Junior, finishing 17th and a 236-1x in the National Trophy Individual Junior Match, finishing 12th. Rob fired a 310-3x in the President’s 100 Junior Match for a 14th place finish, and received 16th place for his score of 211-2 in the National Trophy In-dividual Junior Match. Zoe, while battling mechanical problems, fired a 163-1x for the President’s 100 Ju-nior Pistol Match, and a 121-0x for the National Trophy Individual Ju-nior Match.

Brett did not shoot the two individ-ual matches on Sunday as a Junior, but instead competed as an adult in order to begin the work on his dis-tinguished Pistol Badge. He scored a 330-9x in the President’s Match, and shot a 138-0x in the National Trophy Match. For the Junior team matches, ORPA Gold (Brett and Bryce) fin-ished first with a combined score of 535-11x. ORPA Juniors (Elizabeth and Glenn) finished second with a 530-10x. ORPA Orange (Rob and myself) finished 4th, with a score of 499-4x. The week at Camp Perry this year was a blast, and we can’t wait until next year!

The defending national champion Buckeye Pistol team started their season by hosting the 12th Annu-

al Ohio Cup. The Cup is an open match with no team scores that was attended by community shooters, former team members, The Univer-sity of Akron, Cedarville University and the Buckeyes. The Bucks fared well, taking seven of the nine spots in the three open events of free, standard and air. Ohio State freshman Glenn Zimmerman took the three gun aggregate (1617) naming him the all-around “Ohio Cup Champion.” The Buckeye women had a good first outing also, taking four of the six top spots in the woman’s events of 40-shot air, and 60-shot sport pistol. The lady bucks took the first three spots in the 2-gun aggregate – first was freshman Irina Andrianova (908),k while Elizabeth Szalajko and Elizabeth Buerling tied for second with Szalajko winning the tie break-er for second. No official team scores were kept, but both the open and woman’s teams had very competitive national performances.

Important: Date Change - 2014National Matches Jr. Smallbore Camp

As many of you smallbore shooters are aware, the 2014National Smallbore Championships will not be held atCamp Perry this summer. This required a date changefor the National Junior Smallbore Camp which has alwaysbeen held during the Prone Phase of Smallbore Nationals. This year’s camp will run from Saturday, July 5 throughThursday, July 10. We will still be using the wonderfulcovered Petrarca Range at Camp Perry and will still havethe great and dedicated staff of NRA certified coaches. There will only be 62 firing points open to us this summerinstead of our 72 points so those who are interested inattending camp will want to get their camp forms in early. The camp form for 2014 should be available on the NRAwebsite in early March. Remember that you need asectional score for your camp application also so planthat into your competition schedule this spring. Andquestions should be directed to Russ Evans [email protected] or (330) 534-5344.
