Water action & attractions History & heritage KANYAPELLA BASIN (KOYUGA) 15min from Echuca 2305 Tehan Rd, Kanyapella Kanyapella Basin is the remains of a former lake, Lake Kanyapella, which resulted of earth movements (Cadell Fault) about 18,000 years ago. When the lake drained, winds blew sand from the dry lake bed to form sand dunes. The remainder of the area is River Red Gum and Black Box dominated shallow freshwater marsh and freshwater meadow, home to many native bird species and is a known eagle nesting site. KOW SWAMP 30min from Echuca Kow Swamp, Gunbower VIC 13 19 63 www.parks.vic.gov.au Kow Swamp is a permanent wetland with spectacular views, making it very popular for photographers. Steeped in significant history, it was also an archaeological site following the recovery of partial skeletal remains estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000 years old in the late 1960’s. KYABRAM ERN MILES RESERVE & TROTTING TRACK RESERVE 30min from Echuca South Boundary Rd & Saunder St, Kyabram These reserves within the town boundary offer extensive native bushlands, walking tracks and bird watching opportunities. Both locations are great habitats for local birds including birds of prey - falcons and eagles - along with smaller birds and wrens. Much of its original character is retained and reflected in the National Trust classified historic building streetscape. Situated 7kms from Rushworth, Whroo village grew around the base of Balaclava Hill in 1853 after the discovery of over 20,000 ounces of gold. Now truly a ghost town, find delight in Whroo’s natural ambience, trails and history and enjoy lunch in the picnic area. Balaclava Gold Mine is one of Victoria’s largest open cut mines, now closed to public access but viewable from platforms around the site.
