This page: A section of the crowd at last year’s Civic Park Carols.
With another capacity crowd of up to 35,000 people expected, this homegrown extravaganza is now considered to be one of Adelaide’s premier Christmas events.
Popular ABC Giggle and Hoot personality Jimmy Giggle and an array of local singers and dancers will feature at the event.
Guest artists Michael Griffiths and Kelly Brouhaha will be backed by a 50-voice local community choir and a 15-piece band of Adelaide-based musicians.
But, of course, the major drawcard will be Santa Claus, who will once again interrupt his busy pre-Christmas schedule to entertain the children.
The focus will be on singing Christmas songs and carols, with a list of up to 30 songs to sing along to.
The event will conclude with an eight-minute firework display.
Thank you to all involved, especially volunteers, emergency services, our Elected Members, staff and sponsors, including Fork On The Road and Solo Resource Recovery.

Weave your way through sporting facilities, parks and reserves and meet some rather curious characters on the Modbury Sporting Hub Discovery Trail.
Artist Aiyudot Khom and writer David Chapple worked with local residents and sporting clubs to develop a 2 km loop walk with an artistic twist.
A good starting point is the skate plaza on the corner of Jack High Lane and Golden Grove Road, Ridgehaven.

Emma Wootton, of Hope Valley, started swimming lessons at Waterworld when she was just four years old.
After three years of regular lessons, her talents and abilities were noticed by the Tea Tree Gully Swim Club, which has its headquarters at Waterworld.
Now, at the age of 14, Emma has recently competed with the state swim team at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Thanks to her exceptional times, she has now qualified for the 2018 national squad to compete in Sydney next April.
Emma says that anyone considering learning to swim at Waterworld “should definitely do it”.
“It’s a handy life skill to have and it leads to a healthy active lifestyle.”
Learn to swim group and one-on-one classes are available at Waterworld for all ages and levels of experience.
SWIMMING LESSONS LEAD TO SUCCESS

TOP 5 PLAYGROUNDS TO ENJOY THIS SUMMERLooking for a great playground to visit with your family? Here’s five we highly recommend.
All five playgrounds offer barbecues and public toilets.
Civic Park (Modbury)
A large state-of-the-art playground with three play zones to cater for littlies through to older children. The park includes a three-storey play unit, large rope swing and music elements.
Golden Fields (Golden Grove)
This huge play space includes two substantial playgrounds, plus a rage cage, skate park and BMX track. There are also large open spaces for free play.
Bentley Reserve (Holden Hill)
A great local playground located next to public tennis courts and a dog park.
Valley View Reserve (Valley View)Located at Conway Crescent, this playground has some hidden extras in addition to its large playground. These include a racing track for Matchbox cars on the edge of the slide, kaleidoscope telescope and table tennis.
Balmoral Reserve (Dernancourt)This offers a wide range of exciting play equipment and ample room for children to play on the lawns.
More info on our 120-plus playgrounds: cttg.sa.gov.au/play or 8397 7444
Hargrave Reserve at Modbury Heights might have only just had an exciting new playground with shade sails installed, but more improvements are already on the way.
New public toilets and a barbecue near the new playground (pictured above) will be installed at the reserve by the end of 2017.
This follows a council decision to carry out a $430,000 upgrade of the reserve. The works, conducted from January to March 2018, will include improvements to the cricket pitch and reserve surface.
A community engagement exercise was conducted in June 2017 so residents could have their say on what they would like to see at the reserve.
More upgrades for Hargrave

ADVICE KEY TO SUCCESS Geoff Anderson may have launched his two small Greenwith-based businesses in just four short years, but he’s the first to say he couldn’t have done it without the support of a business mentor.
Geoff, now the successful solo operator of Mobile Log Splitting and MLS Gardening, says he needed to tap into Polaris Business and Innovation Centre’s business advisory services to really kickstart his businesses.
He launched his wood-splitting operation shortly after completion of a small business course four years ago, but soon realised he needed more direction, which he found with Polaris.
“Basically they just put me on the right track,” Mr Anderson said.
Polaris encouraged Geoff to develop a website.
“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a website or not. They [Polaris] said you need to do it now, so I actually went and had all that done and got a developer to do a website for me, which I was quite happy with.”
The establishment of his second business, MLS Gardening, came about following advice from Polaris.
“I started that up as I was finding that because log splitting is very seasonal, I needed something to continue through the spring and autumn months,” he explained.
Tea Tree Gully Council has funded Polaris to give support and advice to local business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Bushfires can start without warning and can quickly threaten everything in their path.
The fact that we live on the edge of a major city is really no excuse to be complacent about the risk of bushfire.
Bushfire does not discriminate, and as long as there is fuel to burn and the conditions are right it will take hold, regardless of whether you live in the bush or on the city fringe.
With the wrong combination of weather conditions and growth of vegetation, a bushfire will spread with amazing speed.
Even if the fire is some kilometres away, the air may be thick with smoke, making it difficult to breathe or even see your way out of your street.
Chaos can then sometimes ensue
when panicked residents attempt to leave.
Add ember attack to the mix and the situation becomes extremely dangerous and unnerving.
This is the reality of bushfire and the reason why the best way to survive is to have a written plan and to have prepared your property.
There is a wealth of planning and bushfire safety information available from the Country Fire Service (CFS).
One of the easiest steps to being bushfire ready is to fill out the CFS 5-minute Bushfire Plan.
This enables you to put a basic plan together that can be saved to your phone and shared with friends and family.
More info: cfs.sa.gov.au or 8463 4200
GET BUSHFIRE READY 10 simple steps to help you have a safer summer• Talk today with family and
neighbours about your bushfire plan and what you’ll do.
• Understand your local environment and your options should a bushfire occur – make your plan.
• Understand daily fire danger ratings. These are the triggers for what action you need to take on fire danger days.
• Know when to stay and defend, and when to leave.
• On Total Fire Ban days, visit the CFS website regularly for information, listen to local radio and watch for signs of smoke in the hills.
Tea Tree Gully CFS played a critical role in fighting the Sampson Flat bushfires.
8
• Download the Alert SA App for fire and hazard warnings and information.
• Your 5-minute Bushfire Plan should include those who rely on you to keep them safe, including the vulnerable and/or any pets and livestock.
• Know your risk. Find out what and where Bushfire Safer Places are from the CFS website.
• Even if it isn’t a Total Fire Ban day, think of the surrounding conditions and use common sense when using machinery, having a barbecue or undertaking any other activity that could cause a fire.
• Report suspicious, deliberate, reckless or negligent acts that may cause a bushfire. One call can make difference – call police on 131 444.
Tree-lined median strips and upgrades to footpaths, verges and cycle lanes are on the way for Modbury’s Smart Road. Work is set to start by the end of 2017.
This investment of over $1.5 million follows a $1.5 million streetscape upgrade along Reservoir Road, from North East Road to Crozier Avenue, which is now nearing completion.
These works are part of a $9 million council plan to revitalise the Modbury Precinct over the next five years.
This spend complements the already significant investment by developers and the State Government and will continue to encourage economic development, growth and jobs.
As part of this plan, major improvements were made last financial year at Civic Park, including a makeover of the park’s North East Road entrance, installation of a state-of-the-art playground, expanded and upgraded toilet facilities, and car park and lighting upgrades.
Road upgrades In addition to the upgrades in Modbury, Tea Tree Gully Council will roll out more than $4 million in road improvements this financial year.
These include:
• An $800,000 upgrade of Kelly Road at Modbury, funded through the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program
• A total of $1.8 million on road reconstruction in various suburbs
• About $1 million on the resealing and kerbing of roads, including a number of streets in the Holden Hill area.
Footpaths We are well on the way with our footpath renewal program, with 18.5 km of footpaths set to be created during this financial year.
This forms part of a three-year, $6 million footpath creation program, we have jointly funded with the State Government to improve road safety and accessibility.
Last financial year 14 km of footpaths were created and an additional 8 km will be rolled out in the 2018–2019 financial year.

YOUR ELECTED MEMBERS
As Christmas approaches we think of family, those dear to us and remember those who are no longer with us.
Sadly in November we lost a member of our council family. Our friend and colleague, Cr Jim McLafferty, passed away after a battle with illness.
Jim was a hands on, practical man dedicated to serving his community. When not reading council reports or responding to resident requests, Jim was happy with a paint brush in one hand and a hammer in the other, not
just a representative of the people but one of the people. A man with the common touch, Jim was much respected and loved and he will be sorely missed.
Jim took his role very seriously but never took himself too seriously. Jim always added a bit of wit and humour in the chamber, a master of the one liner.
This Christmas value those that surround you, let them know how important they are.

Pedare has been abuzz with activity, including refurbishments at the Golden Grove Recreation and Arts Centre and many new paths and crossings.
We have been working with local schools to improve traffic flow at peak times.
A Greenwith Reserve was renamed on 18 August 2017 as a lasting legacy to the late John Eichner to recognise his work and contribution to the City of Tea Tree Gully.
Helping Hand’s newest residential aged- care home will be located at Golden Grove, opposite the Golden Grove Village shopping centre. Construction has started, with completion expected in early 2019. To keep up to date with this development, visit the Helping Hand website: helpinghand.org.au
In December, we look forward to a month of celebrations, holidays and time to spend with friends and family. I hope you join us at Civic Park Carols this year.
Christmas is also a time when we think of others who are struggling in some way and we all look for ways to help.
We wish all in our community health, safety and happiness.

Own a dog?Next time you walk your dog, maybe take a moment to consider what we do to assist you as a dog owner.
Ways we help include providing footpaths, crossings, walking trails and dog parks.
The provision and upgrade of dog parks are not funded solely through rates, as was incorrectly stated in our winter edition, but rather are funded through both rates and dog registration fees.

Concrete newsGood news for runners, walkers and cyclists with a $200,000 upgrade of the O-Bahn Linear Park path at Holden Hill to be completed by July 2018.
The 600-metre path from Grand Junction Road to Waringa Avenue will be concreted, replacing a deteriorating asphalt surface.
In the past five years, Council has invested $1.06 million in O-Bahn Linear Park upgrades, offset by $250,000 in State Government funding.
Courts upgrade Tennis players can look forward to seeing a $120,000 upgrade of Greenwith’s Bernacchi Reserve tennis courts completed by June 2018.
The playing surface will be repaired, plus new fencing, line marking and nets will be installed.
Work is expected to get underway by April 2018.
About $200,000 has been invested on community tennis court upgrades over the last four years.

You can download the Alert SA app which provides bushfire warnings and to stay informed use a battery-operated radio.
Remember we have a Home and Community Support Programme and also a community bus, which is available to transport you to local shopping centres and other places of interest.
Civic Park Movies are coming up on 12 and 19 January, 2 and 9 February, starting around 8.30pm.
The holiday period provides an opportunity for a picnic along Linear Park or any of the other 606 reserves in our City.
Civic Park Carols is coming up on 10 December, starting at 7.30pm.
We wish everyone a very happy festive season.
We trust that you and your family have a safe holiday time and a healthy, prosperous New Year.

On 12 September I was honoured to join Wynn Vale Primary School Governing Council chair, Ryan Williams, and the school’s principal, Graeme Fenton, to officially cut the ribbon for the new access pathway joining Wynn Vale Primary School to the Sunnybrook Shopping Centre.
Along with other Governing Council representatives, we worked hard to re-establish this pathway. Happy walking!
Keep an eye out for the 2018 Tea Tree Gully RSL Calendar.
I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
Cr Paul Barbaro
Thanks to residents and community groups who have continued to place trust and confidence in their ward councillor to deliver better facilities and improvements in Hillcott Ward.
Over the coming months, we will see capital works in Wynn Vale and Modbury Heights as Council delivers on the commitments recently made.
If you would like to know more about the plans for our area in 2017–2018, please contact me.
I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and safe New Year.

With the weather warming up it’s great to see more residents enjoying the wonderful new amenities at Civic Park.
The playground equipment caters for all ages, while the adults can enjoy the barbecue facilities and shaded seating area.
Look out for more upgrades in the future and many upcoming events.
If you haven’t visited for a while, please take the time to bring your family and friends and make a day of it.
At the time of writing, Council was undertaking community consultation on upgrades to Dalaston Reserve, Modbury.
Various new works are happening around the City, including a basketball play space at Millbank Reserve, Gilles Plains.
Upgrades to Reservoir Road at Modbury continue with tree renewal, pedestrian access and median strips.
Over the next few months, Holden Hill residents will see lots of road upgrades, with further improvements to the O-Bahn walking and cycling path.
Please contact us if you need any assistance.

It’s with a heavy heart that I write this column without my fellow ward councillor and friend, Cr Jim McLafferty. He passed away on 9 November after a battle with illness.
Jim will be remembered as a truly dedicated, hardworking and humble Elected Member who loved nothing more than to serve the City’s residents.
I had the honour of working with him on Council for nearly 10 years and
throughout that time, it was clear that his number one priority was to serve his community.
Jim fought and won many battles for his residents and was proudly and unashamedly bias in his pursuit to ensure Steventon Ward got its fair share.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Jim’s wife, Christine, who he loved and adored dearly. He was a beautiful man and will be remembered fondly by our community. Rest in Peace Jim.
