Message from the Dean
Welcome to Gulf College!
I am very delighted that you have chosen Gulf College to pursue your higher education.
Gulf College offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through academic affiliation
arrangements with UK Universities. This means that all our students go through the same quality
assurance procedures which are being followed by the partner Universities for all its on-campus
programmes. Upon successful completion of the degree requirements, the partner University will be
issuing your degrees. Gulf College also offers the General Foundation Programme.
I would like to present this Student Handbook for your guidance and information. This handbook
spells out the most up-to-date information regarding policies, procedures, activities and services
which apply to you as a student of Gulf College. This handbook contains important information
which you should read carefully and keep with you during your studies at Gulf College. It’s the
responsibility of the individual students to read and understand the contents of this handbook.
You are welcome to contact me or any other member of our team at Gulf College for any
clarifications. I am sure you will get the support and service you deserve. Any suggestions for
additional information or modifications to future handbook are most welcome. I will be keen to
receive your feedback and will consider your comments, which promote the sense of openness and
transparency that we seek to achieve.

1.1 Background of the College The origin of the institution dates back to 1990 when it was established as a professional and
vocational training provider in the Sultanate of Oman. In 1996, the training institute obtained the
approval of the Ministry of Higher Education, Sultanate of Oman for offering the Master’s degree in
Business Administration (MBA) through an International Outreach arrangement with the University
of Hull. In 2003, it was granted the approval from Ministry of Higher Education to upgrade the status
from a training institute to a Higher Education College.
Currently, the College offers Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business and Management Studies,
Marketing Management, Business Economics and Accounting and Finance and Bachelor of Science
(Honours) in Business Information Systems and Master of Business Administration (MBA)
programme with pathways Finance, Project Management, Marketing, Islamic Finance and Health
Sector Management in academic collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University. Bachelor of
Science (Honours) in Computing Science, Mobile Computing and Information Systems in academic
collaboration with Staffordshire University. The College offers its own General Foundation
Programme. The College has also introduced this year, the International Foundation Programme in
partnership with We Bridge Academy, UK. In addition to the above, the College has also introduced
part time delivery of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business and Management Studies and
Accounting and Finance. Gulf College works under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Higher
Education, Research & Innovation. The medium of instruction at the College is English.
In 2014, the College moved into its new purpose-built campus in Mabela (Muscat). The campus has
the following facilities: classrooms and lecture halls, assignment & information technology Labs,
Auditorium (1000 seating capacity), conference hall (100 seating capacity) a library spread over two
floors, a coffee shop, a clinic, prayer hall (male & female), elevators and escalators, an outdoor
Roman theatre, restaurant (600 seating capacity), two gyms (male & female), an Indoor Sports
Stadium, a sports court, playground, garden and landscaping and car park.

1.3 Gulf College Rules and Regulations As a registered student of Gulf College, you are advised to adhere and comply with the rules and regulations of Gulf College. The College authority may take disciplinary action if you violate the College rules and regulations. Gulf College strives to provide a positive learning environment for your success in your studies and overall personal growth. If you have any queries on the rules and regulations of Gulf College, you should direct your queries to the Centre for Student Affairs. You are required to follow these rules and regulations and sign a Learner’s agreement at the time of induction. Please click the link for the Learner’s agreement https://bit.ly/3671t16 1.4 Admissions The College admits students from all walks of life and welcomes applications from all prospective candidates regardless of their gender, race, nationality or disability. Students seeking admissions to any of the programmes at Gulf College are subject to fulfilment of the minimum entry requirement of attaining a General Education Diploma of the Sultanate of Oman or equivalent. Also, admission is

allowed based on other academic achievements and experience permitted under the regulations of Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Oman. 1.5 Placement test for General Foundation Programme GFP is a one year programme based on Oman Academic Standards for GFP. All students who come to Gulf College for admission are given a placement test that tests three skills, namely English, Mathematics and Information Technology. The students are exempted from the modules based on the results of the placement test. 1.6 ID Cards Gulf College issues an ID card for all registered students. These ID cards are the exclusive property of Gulf College and must be presented when requested by any College official. Failure to do so may result in a disciplinary action. It is compulsory to show your ID card whenever you are appearing for an examination. The ID card can be collected from the College reception. 1.7 Email Account and other login IDs You will be assigned an email account for all official communications and use of Microsoft Teams for your online classes. You are responsible for checking your assigned email account regularly. You will also be provided a login ID for the GC portal in the College website, Moodle and Turnitin accounts. As an undergraduate or postgraduate student you will also be provided with the username and password to login to the University online library. Why is it important that you check your email regularly?
1. Email is the official communication tool of Gulf College to communicate with all its registered
students. Regular checking of your Gulf College email will enable you to be updated with:
• Important news and events
• Any change/cancellation in class/exam timing
• Exam results announcements
• Module registration
• Academic Advisor Notification and GC Moodle Notification
• Pastoral support schedule and Extra (support) class announcements
• Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities

Checking your email is a must.
1.8 Academic Calendar and time table The College publishes the academic calendar in the College website. The calendar provides details about the semester start date, module registration, induction, study period, assessment

submissions, mock exam, main exams, award/examinations boards, results announcement, resit period etc. Please click the link for the Academic Calendar https://bit.ly/3mNgv22. You will also access your time table each semester when you register. 1.9 Attendance Regulations The standard of attendance should be maintained to achieve the learning outcomes in the
prescribed period of study. Attendance shall be reported by the tutor concerned to the faculty
administrator every month. Students are required to attend at least 70% of lectures, seminars and
tutorials. If you fall below this threshold an initial warning will be given by the Faculty/Centre. If the
non-attendance continues the Programme Leader will issue a written warning which, if still
unheeded, may result in termination of your studies or a ban on writing your assessments. For

1.10 Dress code for students Gulf College alongside the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation requires the
students to follow the dress code ensuring that the Omani traditions and culture are upheld. You
are expected to dress modestly in College. Anyone who violates the dress code or is indecently
dressed then you will be penalised. It is the responsibility of each student to respect the dress code
and contribute in promoting a positive image of Gulf College. You will find the dress code in the

1.11 Discrimination and Harassment Gulf College works to eliminate discrimination, harassment and aggressive conduct against any
person, student, or staff member on the basis of race, religion, colour, sex, nationality, age or
disability, marital status or sexual orientation (Please refer to Appendix B: Student Code of Conduct).
1.12 Smoking Gulf College is a no smoking campus. Designated smoking areas are available only outside the main
campus building (Please refer to Appendix B: Student Code of Conduct). Smoking inside the College
building will be subject to disciplinary action as per the Student Disciplinary Policy.
1.13 Student Behaviour All students admitted to Gulf College shall abide by the policies, rules and regulations, student code
of conduct prescribed by the College and assume all responsibilities relating to his/her status as a
student (Please refer to Appendix B: Student Code of Conduct). The rules and regulations contained
therein shall govern the students’ conduct and behaviour policy. It provides the corresponding
administrative sanctions for any violation as well as the imposition of the prescribed penalty after

1.14 Learning outside the classroom and guest speakers Gulf College organises industrial visits and other field trips to enhance students learning in a practical
way. Guest speakers from the industry are invited to deliver lectures based on their hands-on
experience. You need to take the opportunity of such outside the classroom activities to enhance
your learning experience.

1.15 Extra-curricular Activities In order to enhance the camaraderie of the students, the College conducts extra-curricular activities
and sports and recreational activities. By engaging you in these activities, the College also aims to
enhance the confidence and social interactions of the students. These activities are announced in
the IPTV, College website, email and also text messages are sent to students informing them with

1.16 Students with Disability Gulf College in line with its values welcomes disabled students especially those with speech and hearing impairments. Gulf College takes special care and responsibility towards the special needs students. Sign language teachers and a Student with Disability Coordinator are available on campus for any assistance. The College also welcomes students with physical disabilities and the campus is purpose built to cater to this category of students. 1.17 Data Protection & Confidentiality Gulf College is governed by the Data Protection regulations of Oman and will treat all personal information of students as confidential. This includes any student records and any sensitive personal information relating to students’ mental or physical health. All information received under this Act will only be shared with those members of College staff who need to know that information in order to offer appropriate support to the student or to enable the operation of this regulation and its procedures. 1.18 Damage of Gulf College property Gulf College prides itself on its constant efforts for achieving very high standards of education. This includes provision of a state-of-the-art campus equipped with computers, IPTV and other equipment. With the aim of protecting the rights of the students to work with the best available equipment anybody will be kept liable for any loss of or damage to Gulf College property caused by his/her/their carelessness, negligence or misuse of the computers, printers, TV and other electronic equipment as well as for the tables, whiteboards, etc. Please note that writing on the tables or marking them in any other way, or sticking chewing-gum to the tables, chairs, boards, etc. will be considered as serious damage and the perpetrator will be subject to disciplinary actions. A second offence will result in expulsion from the College. 1.19 Students Grievance and complaints Gulf College is always vigilant to provide maximum support to all students and the doors are always open to any grievances from the students. Being student focused, the College ensures that students are always a priority at Gulf College. To make this effective and to ensure that the student voice is heard, the College has provided opportunities for students to be representatives in some of the key committees in the College. The Committees where student are involved and the mechanism where their feedback is taken into consideration are:

1.21 Student Support In addition to the academic advising service provided by the faculty concerned, the Centre for Student Affairs provides support services to the students. Career Advice: Information about job positions that are announced by different organisations will be made available to you through the Career Guidance and Alumni Relations Department. Contact Mr. Nasser Al Hinai, Department Head and can reach via email: [email protected] Non-academic Counselling: Counselling Department under the Centre for Student Affairs is responsible to provide counselling related to non-academic issues. You may contact the Centre for Student Affairs, Ms. Majida Al Dharmaki at [email protected] for counselling services. Fees and Financial Advice: Gulf College provides flexible ways for fee payments. You can avail any of the installment facilities
for the fee payment. It is your responsibility to make all payments on time. If you fail to make fee
payments on time you will not be able to progress to another semester or level or your results will
not be provided or you may not be allowed to do your assessments or you will not be given your
ifadah or certificate unless the required fees is paid or addressed through an agreed payment plan.
Students have various convenient options of fee payment, either in installments or to pay per
module. Alternatively, they can put forward a payment proposal to the finance department for
approval. Another option is based on the sponsorship payment pattern. Please see below the details

One of the ways to achieve this is through the Academic Advising System. Gulf College ensures that each student has an academic advisor who will guide them through their academic journey. Each Academic Advisor allocates 5 timetabled hours per week for academic advising and students can meet them at any time during these hours without any prior appointment. Learner’s Agreement
College will provide you with:
• An induction programme. • Information about your programme of study e.g. programme structure, assessment methods,
attendance requirements and coursework. • Qualified and experienced tutors. • Module handbooks - one for each module containing vital information such as the delivery plan, weekly
study notes etc. • Access to student services at the Centre for Admissions, Registration & Communication. • An academic advisor to support you throughout your study. • Evidence of your achievement as per academic award regulations. • Opportunities for you to express your opinions through your representative about the services we
provide. • Advice on progression. • The arrangement for completion of your programme through you joining another group, if a class ceases
to be viable.
You as a student will need to:
• Attend all classes punctually. • Explain and/or produce evidence for any absences/lateness. • Behave responsibly in class, taking care not to disrupt the learning of others, acting with respect and
courtesy towards your tutors and other students at all times. • Complete and submit assignments and coursework by the agreed date. • Take responsibility for your own learning and find out what is expected of you while on the programme. • Abide by all exam and assessment rules and regulations. • Submit the exceptional/mitigating circumstances documents for consideration within the specified time
period and as per the relevant process. • Only present your own work for assessment. Presenting other people's work as your own, or allowing
others to use your work in this way will be considered as plagiarism and will result in disciplinary action. • Discuss any matter concerned with your study at the College with your Academic Advisor /tutor(s) and
others as relevant to the matter. • Return any borrowed book(s), equipment and materials by the agreed date. • Inform the Centre for Admissions, Registration and Communication, Academic Advisor and other tutors
concerned if you are thinking of leaving the programme you are pursuing at the College, or if your address, employment or benefit status change.
• Take responsibility for finding out about times and dates of examinations and assessments. • Take responsibility for arranging for any fees to be paid to the College. • Abide by the College's Information Technology Policy and all student-related policies • Abide by the Student Code of Conduct.
If the student does not abide by the Learner’s Agreement
If tutor(s) feels that a student is not abiding by this agreement, then they will first discuss the
matter with the concerned student. If they are not satisfied with the result, disciplinary action may
be taken in this order:
• First verbal warning
• Second verbal warning
• First written warning
• Second written warning

• Final letter from college management with the appropriate action
For very serious breaches of the Learner’s Agreement, such as breaching exam regulations,
committing plagiarism (presenting other people's work as own work), interfering with the college's
computer systems or where the learning of others has been very seriously disrupted, serious action
can be taken as per the relevant policies and regulations.
If a student has committed a serious breach of the Learner’s Agreement and a written warning is
given straight away, a copy will be sent to his/her parents/guardian/Sponsor.
If a student is employed and if his/her study is sponsored by the employer, then copies of written
warnings will be sent to his/her employer.
The student will also have the right to appeal against the action(s) as per the grievance/appeals procedure of
the College.
If a student thinks that the College has not adhered to the Learner’s Agreement
If a student thinks that this agreement is not being kept he/she can raise the matter with his/her
academic advisor, concerned tutors or other relevant staff of the College.

Student Code of Conduct 1. INTRODUCTION
The Student Code of Conduct contains rules and regulations that governs the student’s conduct and
behaviour. Gulf College students are mandated to observe decorum throughout their academic
journey in the College.
2. SCOPE
The Student Code of Conduct applies to all students who are enrolled in Gulf College. All Students
shall abide to the student-related policies, rules and regulations of the College.
3. STUDENTS RIGHTS 3.1 Select their programme of study as long as they comply with the entry requirements; 3.2 Avail student academic and non-academic support services; and 3.3 Express opinions and suggestions with regard to their study programme and student support
services by following the proper channels of communication.
4. CODE OF CONDUCT It is the fundamental duty of every student to strictly adhere to the following: 4.1 Portray a high degree of self-discipline and good conduct at all times; 4.2 Respect others’ opinions and cultures; 4.3 Follow the dress code prescribed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation; 4.4 Use the College facilities and resources wisely and appropriately and contribute in protecting the
environment and conserving the natural resources; 4.5 Attend classes punctually and explain and/or produce valid evidence for any absence/tardiness; 4.6 Behave responsibly in class and avoid disturbing tutors and fellow students; 4.7 Take responsibility for attending assessments at the required date, time and place; 4.8 Submit the exceptional/mitigating circumstances documents for consideration within the
specified time period and as per the process; 4.9 Follow strictly assessments’ rules and regulations; 4.10 Uphold academic integrity at all times; 4.11 Refrain from bribing or offering any favour to others to gain undue advantage in any academic
related-matters; 4.12 Abstain from doing the following untoward behaviour:
4.12.1 Discourtesy or improper aggressiveness, uttering harsh and indecent words that provoke others, harassing, annoying, bullying, fighting, assaulting and insulting others, Shouting, booing, making unruly sound and disturbing public;
4.12.2 Displaying, viewing, downloading or distributing obscene pictures, music, movies, racist or offensive material and other pornographic forms;
4.12.3 Smoking and drinking alcohol within the campus; 4.12.4 Littering in the College premises; 4.12.5 Indecent physical intimacy or improper relations; 4.12.6 Stealing money, property or property rights belonging to another person; 4.12.7 Forgery and Falsification and impersonation; 4.12.8 Vandalism or damaging College properties such as furniture, window panes, software,
electronic equipment and others, and writing or drawing on the walls; and 4.12.9 Carrying harmful items.
Note: students must abstain from involving themselves in any other untoward behaviour not included in the above mentioned offenses.
