TAKE THE CHALLENGE:

PERFORM FIVE ACTS OF KINDNESS EACH DAY

Teachers using the Learning for Life Character Education Curriculum help students develop good and healthy

habits. One topic discussed in the grade specific preschool through high school curriculum is overcoming ad-

versity and showing kindness to others.

You can also practice the kindness habit! If you find yourself upset by a lack of courtesy and respect in to-

day’s society, strive to set an example for others by practicing random acts of kindness.

Here are some ideas to help get you started:

Plant flowers in a public, neglected corner. Pick up a piece of trash you notice as you walk along the street. The next time an employee at a store does his or her job enthusiastically and with care, make sure that you let their supervisor know; we’re often quick to complain if someone doesn’t do their job well but fail to offer recognition when someone goes out of their way to do a good job. Leave the exact change for a chocolate bar, or other treat, in the change slot of a vending machine. Pay the toll for the car behind you. Let someone who appears to be in a hurry cut ahead of you in line at the grocery store. Give someone an honest compliment. Drop off a big box of doughnuts at the fire or police station. Send a letter to your favorite teacher thanking them for helping you become the person you are now. Leave a bouquet of flowers on your neighbor’s front steps anonymously. Leave a dollar bill on the ground for someone else to find.

Look for specific ways in which others need help and do what you can to help them. So the next time you find yourself upset after being cut off in traffic, remind yourself to start practicing ran-dom acts of kindness.

CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS MEDALS AWARDED

Five Boy Scouts from Troop 157, Niceville and one Scout from Troop 553, Bluewater Bay were awarded the "Ad Altare Dei" Medal in a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in

Pensacola on Boy Scout Sunday, February 7, 2010.

The scouts completed a nine month program that included over 20 meetings, weekend retreat, 25 hours of community service

which included cooking and taking food to shut-ins, maintained parish grounds, built a bonfire for the parish picnic and prepared all meals at a weekend retreat for over 100 high school students from the Pensacola-Tallahassee Diocese. The most important

aspect of the program is that the Scout grows in his spiritual experience of his relationship to God and the church.

WINTERFEST 2010 ~ GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE, FEBRUARY 4 - 7TH, 2010

75 youth and leaders from the Gulf Coast Council made the trip to Gatlinburg in early February to attend Winterfest, an annual regional Venturing event.

WHAT IS WINTERFEST?

Winterfest is an exciting, competitive and fun-filled event that has taken place for more than 30 years. It is the largest event for Explorers and Venturers in the nation. Events cover many areas of interest and all youth are sure to find multiple activities they will enjoy. Additionally, participants enjoy snow skiing, shopping and site seeing in the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee.

Several Crews & Posts rode to Tennessee, some in private vehicles and some on a chartered bus, arriving in time for a hearty breakfast at the Log Cabin Pancake house in downtown Gatlinburg Friday morning. After breakfast, the Crews broke into groups. Some spent the day skiing and others spent the day seeing what the little town had to offer. Many of the crews also attended Friday night’s welcome dance!

Saturday was a day filled with events and competitions at the Convention Center. Crews took home prizes for competing and some just enjoyed the events and camaraderie. Saturday night brought the awards ceremony and the closing dance. On Sunday, tired but happy, the Gulf Coast Council Venturers and Explorers headed back home, hoping to arrive in time to watch the Super Bowl!

ONE VENTURER’S VIEW

Winterfest was probably our first real big event as a small crew. It was just four of us and that was most of the crew. It was my mom, LauraJo, Billy and Shay, two crew members. We all went with barely any knowledge of what would be going on or what the heck we were going to do half the time. When we finished the 10 hour bus ride there, I could only think of how long the day was

going to be and how tired we all would be. It was also the day that we would ski. Of course, Shay and I stuck together through our ski school and we figured out something; neither of us could ski. After several falls and bruises, we decided that skiing was left for Billy. Even though we didn’t ski, we still goofed off walking around Gatlinburg and then watched several of the competitions. Shay

tried the squeeze box and we took pictures as she did that and laughed and we explored the area around. All in all, it was an amazing trip and I know my crew and hopefully new Venturer’s

will return and we’ll try ourluck at the competitions yet to come.

THE PROGRAM CORNER Jim Boksa Council Program Director The wheels are starting to turn and we are picking up speed heading into Spring and Summer.

The biggest experience, Scout Jam 2010, April 9 -10 will be the largest event in the history of the Gulf Coast Council. This is the council’s 100th anniversary celebration. There is so much planned, we can’t list all of it here. Please plan to come out at least for the day on Saturday, April 10th, 2010. Look for more information on our website soon.

The Spring Family Camp dates are set for April and May. Remember that only 600 people will be al-lowed to attend, get your reservations in early.

The Cub/Webelos Resident Camp Cubmasters will receive a copy of the Leaders Guide, you are also able to download them from the council website.

The Day Camp Directors and Day Camp Program Directors are planning another great week of Day Camps in each district. Look for information coming in the mail and at your district’s roundtables.

Summer Camp at Spanish Trail Scout Reservation is filling up quickly. We will once again offer for older Scouts the Euchee Outdoor Experience (EOE). This is a week long wilderness survival program, where Scouts will see parts of Spanish Trail that few people have ever seen. There are also several new merit badges this summer, with over 90% of them to be completed at camp. All Scoutmasters will receive a copy of the Leaders Guide in the mail and it is available on the council website at www.gulfcoastcouncil.org under Boy Scout Camping. We are looking for Camp Staff this summer. If you have anyone interested in working at summer camp, please have them contact me at the Scout Office (850) 476-6336 or email [email protected]. Youth must be 15 years old to participate in the Coun-selor In Training (CIT) Program and must be 16 years of age to be paid staff .

Several of our Venturing Crews and Exploring Posts spent a fun filled weekend in Gatlinburg, TN with several thousand other Venturers and Explorers at Winterfest. They enjoyed snow skiing, snowboard-ing, and many other activities.

Please be sure you are on on your Districts e-mail list. If you are not, contact your District Executive to get on this list.

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER - GEORGE PELFREY (850) 651-1613

DISTRICT EXECUTIVE - BRYANT PERKINS (850) 683-0330

From the Desk of your District Executive:

I hope that everyone had a great birthday last month and showed everyone they knew what scouting

means to them. Now that the BSA is officially 100 years old, we have so much to be thankful for as an

organization.

We have many things going on in the district. Most of the packs have either had their Blue & Gold or will

be having them in a week or two. Along with Blue & Gold’s everyone has been racing their cars at the

Pinewood Derbies. The winners of those pack races will bring their cars to Santa Rosa Mall on Saturday

March 20th for the District Pinewood Derby. Please check the district page at www.gulfcoastcouncil.org

for more information on the district race.

February, the council started our Camp Card Spring Fundraiser. In the first few weeks of the Camp Card

Sale for the district, I have heard of great success from units in the district. I have heard from more than

one leader that “These cards sell themselves!” There is no reason that a Scout that would like to go to

camp shouldn’t be able to with this sale going on. Let’s get those Scouts to camp from the funds raised.

After everyone attends Scout Jam 2010 at the Northwest Florida Fairgrounds in April, we will have a Dis-

trict Webelo Ree in May the weekend of May 21-23 at Camp Euchee at Spanish Trail Scout Reservation.

We look forward to seeing the entire 3rd and 4th grade Cub Scouts there to see how the Boy Scouts Roll!

Troop 52 will be the troop that is hosting the Webelo Ree. If any troops are interested in helping them,

just let them know.

2010 will be a great year for Scouting in our district so just keep doing what you have been and we will

soar like we always do!

Camp Cards are sending

Scouts to camp this year!

If your unit is participating in the spring fundraiser you have

probably already witnessed how the cards sell themselves. Our

goal this year was to offer a product that would allow every

Scout that wanted to go to Day Camp or Summer Camp the ability

to go out and quickly raise all the money needed to do that

in these tough economic times. It has Only been 3 weeks since the

sale began and units have checked out more than 14,000 of the

Camp Cards. Several units have sold their initial order and are

checking out additional Camp Cards. A Scout from Pensacola Bay

has already received a $75 check through the weekly drawing

and “On my Honor” forms are coming in daily from Pensacola Bay.

One parent said “These things are selling themselves”. Their Scout

sold 50 cards in 1 day. This is definitely an awesome opportunity

for Scouts to be able to raise $125 to send them to camp

and have their name placed in a weekly drawing to win

$75. Congratulations everyone… and keep up the great work
