Founded by the Bahmani Sultans in the 14thcentury, the city of Gulbarga, recentlyrenamed as Kalburgi (land of stones) haswitnessed the twists and turns of history, just like the markings of a typical Indian city.Having its name derived from the Persianlanguage, where ‘Gul’ stands for rose and‘Barga’ for leaf, and constructed in the shapeof “Roseleaf”, this place justifies itself as aland of lavish living. Gulbarga’s old fort has anumber of interesting buildings, imposingtombs of Bahmani Kings and around 15towers that are inspired from the Islamicarchitecture. Those of you who have an eyefor detail will learn that the architecture ofthe Jama Masjid reflects the same style asthe one followed in the great mosque inCordoba, Spain. Chor Gumbad is one of themost prominent attractions of this city. It isbuilt atop the hill and is located on the westside of Gulbarga Fort. This victorymonument is a beautiful piece ofarchitecture and must be visited. Devotees

TheGulbarga fort is the obvious place to start ahistorical journey; it looks strong, thoughdesolate. Originally built by one RajaGulchand and later fortified by AlauddinHasan Bahman Shah (1347-1358), it has 15towers and 26 guns. A thick double wall withmassive bastions encloses it. The fort issurrounded by a moat in which cowherdswash buffaloes and tonga-wallahs theircarriages. Within the fort lies the massivecitadel called Bala Hissar, hewn from blackstone. It has semi-circular turrets on thesides and corners. Atop it is an old cannonthat is nearly 25 ft long. The Jami Masjid, which resembles the Great Mosque ofCordoba in Spain, is an elegant structurewith wide arches. Built in 1367, it’s one ofthe earliest mosques in South India. Northof the fort is the 14th-century Shah BazaarMosque and the 15th-century Dargah ofSheik Siraj-ud-din Junaidi, the religiousteacher of Alauddin Shah Bahmani.
