GULAG: Soviet Prison Camps and their Legacy
Concept Paper
Thesis
The GULAG system was not an effective method of correction. The GULAG (acronym
for Glavnoe Upravlenie ispravitel'no-trudovykh LAGerei) was, as stated in the article, used as a
weapon of ongoing political control over one country. The GULAG system was told to be an
inhumane detention for prisoners who were illtreated and constantly tortured. The GULAG
system is not positive in a way that the conditions in modernday !ussian prisons resemble the
old prison camps where prisoners are un"ustly treated and the facilities are left unmaintained. The
GULAG system only encouraged the practice of torture and indifference among the prisoners,
instead of reformation which should be the honest purpose of penal systems.
Anti – thesis
The GULAG system is a positive disciplinary action. #osef $talin was a twisted man who
intended to lead the country to greater good. %ot only did the GULAG system serve as a
corrective detention for the criminals, it also provided labor and public service which helped in
cultivating the country. The GULAG system also empowered the most viewed system of change
which was the e&uality of women. The GULAG system's most important impact was the rise of
the economy of !ussia. $talin influenced the economy by advancing the provinces to
industrialied cities. The GULAG system set a stage for the region to view nationalism and
patriotism.
Synthesis
The GULAG system was a widespread prison camp set all over !ussia. t is similar to
*itler's %ai prison camps, but however, less discussed, it e+isted in matters of political control
and due to $talin's vision.
The GULAG system was a rundown e+perimental place for political power, and people
were treated less than guinea pigs in actual e+periments. espite its purpose to provide
disciplinary control over the wrong doers, it showed no success. The prison camps were left in
filth and stin- a place generally people would not even last day in. The GULAG system

contained a combination of actual law offenders and innocent citiens. The possibility of being
tortured or -illed by your fellow inmates was terrifying in its own. The GULAG system proved
to be more of a piggery than a detainment camp for reformation.
The GULAG system provided labor and epiphany for people to treasure their country
however it does not "ustify the sadistic method in -eeping its prisoners. The wrong does not
substantiate the deaths of many innocent people for a failed vision. The lives of those ac&uitted
persons could have raised the economy without -illing millions. The GULAG system only
invigorated the modern age to do as what their ancestors has done, and no act can defend the
reinforcement of continuation of a negative event in history.
The GULAG system fails as a disciplinary method of detainment. mprisonment aims to
provide rehabilitation to those who have committed wrong. %orway, for e+ample, provides
rooms similar to the ordinary world because they consider the fact that the inmates would
eventually return to society. The result of such practice was proven to help the wrong doers see-
well. The GULAG system fails to see the importance of humans and nurture their welfare.
/eople are the ones who uphold the country and the future generations. They must be treated
well and with conviction, otherwise, the very thing $talin or other visionaries see- to change for
the better might seie to e+ist.
