Language iscontinuously developing. In pursuance of the Gujarat official Languages Act,1961, the strenuous task of switching over the language of the entire administrationwas completed. The administration of the State has become more and more people-oriented because of Gujarati as an official language.Owing to many fold functions of the Government and more areas ofdevelopment, activities of the Government have been expanded. Therefore, thisDirectorate had published Trilingual Administrative Dictionary (English-Gujarati-Hindi) in 1987. SANSKAR AWARD has been conferred to this dictionary. With aview to maintaining equality at national level some administrative words beingused in the offices of the Central Government have been accepted in the same formand Gujarati-Hindi equivalents have been given therein. As a result Gujaratiequivalents of the English administrative words being used in the StateAdministration can be found easily from the said dictionary. With the extent anddevelopment of Gujarati as an official language of the state, many new administrativewords in Gujarati language have been developed, coined and accepted, resultingwhich a need of one dictionary giving English equivalents of Gujarati administrativewords was highly felt. Inquiries and demands for such dictionary were being madeby some Government departments/offices and individuals because they have toenter into official correspondence in English with other State Governments and theCentral Government, High Courts, Supreme Court in some cases. But Gujarati-English Administrative Dictionary was not available from which one can findEnglish equivalents of Gujarati administrative words. Taking this long felt needinto account, in pursuance of the sanction received from the General AdministrationDepartment, Government of Gujarat, the work of preparing Gujarati-EnglishAdministrative Dictionary was undertaken. The work of this dictionary has been completed under the guidance of acommittee comprising five experts of language from various fields under thechairmanship of the Director of Languages and Shri L.K. Rohit, Deputy Directorof Languages as a member secretary. This committee has properly finalized manywords of Gujarati language and their English equivalents during the period ofabout five years. This dictionary includes Gujarati words being used in day-to-dayadministration right from Gram Panchayat to the State and Central Governmentas well as courts. English equivalents of various Gujarati words being used in&*&*&*&*medical, information, communication, media, technology, modern sciences etc.are also given. Moreover French words have also been given as an Englishequivalents for some Gujarati words. The alphabetic order of gujarati wordsin this dictionary has been maintained as per Sarth Goojarati Jodnikosh''but due to some limitations of the computer, the alphabetic order of someGujarati words having space inbetween or hyphen and conjuction could notbe maintained. As per the computerization policy of the state Government, the C.D. ofthis dictionary has also been prepared.Besides the consultants of Gujarati and English languages, the officers andstaff of the Research Branch of this Directorate have made sincere and commendableefforts to make this dictionary as possible as utmost useful.I am thankful to the consultants, experts, officers and the staff at thisjuncture, who had become helpful in one way or other in preparation of thisdictionary.
