Quick Center for the Arts (QCA), presents the internationally renowned Swiss gui- tarist Christoph Denoth, soprano Elizabeth Dabney and baritone Maksim Ivanov in the program “Mr. Dowland’s Midnight.” Third in a series of seven classical music and jazz concert events, Denoth’s performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the QCA’s Rigas Family Theater. Denoth will also conduct a master class at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Room 211 of the Quick Center. The master class is free and open to the public and all are invited to “bring your guitar.” A contemporary of Shakespeare, John Dowland, born in 1563, composed more than 100 pieces for lute that were arranged for harpsichord, viola da gamba or string ensembles during his lifetime. Denoth examined the original manuscripts preserved at Cambridge and Oxford and adapted them for guitar in the tradition of ancient music. The recording “Mister Dowland’s Midnight” has won numerous international awards. Denoth was born in Basel and studied classical gui- tar at various Swiss conservatories as well as in master classes with Pepe Romero, Alvaro Pierri and Oscar Ghiglia. He won international awards including the 35th Concours International de Guitare Paris and the 1995 Stresa Competition. Denoth is a sought-after guitar soloist; he performs regularly with different orchestras and chamber ensem- bles and at international festivals such as the Schleswig- Holstein and Salzburg Mozarteum Festivals. St. Bonaventure will join withacademic and business institutionsacross the country whenInternational Education Week isobserved from Nov. 13-18.

At SBU, the focus of events forthe week will center on internationalstudents pursuing academic pro-grams in America and overseas aca-demic opportunities for American

students to study abroad. TheUniversity will celebrate the weekwith a series of events, workshopsand activities for the SBU and localcommunity.

The international dinner tradition-ally begins International EducationWeek at St. Bonaventure. Open to thepublic, the Sunday, Nov. 13 dinnerwill introduce attendants to entreesand desserts from all over the world.

A multi-cultural Mass will also beheld on Nov. 13. Friars Marek Stybor,O.F.M., a native of Poland, and JoseFrancis, O.F.M., from India, will con-celebrate the evening Mass.

The University will conduct atwo-day Study Abroad Fair as well asworkshops on both studying abroadand getting jobs in the global commu-nity. During the week, SBU-TV willrun programming to highlight SBUstudy abroad opportunities, said AliceSayegh, director of InternationalStudies. Additionally, there will beNotice Boards focusing on countries,cultures and a global IQ quiz.

The International Student Association, with supportfrom International Studies, will kick off the weeklong cel-ebration with its annual dinner. Social hour will begin at5 p.m. and will include displays from students’ homecountries. A buffet will begin at 6 p.m. with entrees anddesserts from all over the world. The event is open to thepublic.
