Mary Ward C.S.S Performing Arts Course Oerings 2016/2017 Guitar and Dance AMG3M1 Guitar Music, Grade 11, University/College Preparation This course is designed for students with no previous guitar experience. Students will learn many of the dierent styles, skills, and techniques required to become a successful guitarist. Areas of concentration include: correct posture, note reading, aural skills, flat picking, singing songs, rhythmic patterns, chord study, finger picking styles, musical forms, and improvisation. Students may use their own acoustic guitar or one will be provided for them. Prerequisite: None AMG4M1 Guitar Music, Grade 12, University/College Preparation This course is designed for students who have successfully completed the AMG 3M1 course. Focus will be on continuing the development of skills necessary to become independent as a guitarist. Students will expand their knowledge of the various guitar languages (classical, finger style, folk, rock, jazz), as well as deepen their understanding of rhythm and composition. Areas of concentration include: note reading, ear-training, extended chord study, improvisation and performance experience. Prerequisite: AMG3M1 ATC3M1 World Dance, Grade 11, University/College Preparation This courses emphasizes the development of students’ movement vocabulary relating to dance genres from around the world. Students will research and explore how physical, intellectual, and artistic skills developed in dance can be applied in a wide range of careers. Prerequisite: None Keyboard and Composition AMK201 Keyboarding, Introductory Grade 10, Open This is a beginning piano course designed for those students with little or no experience of playing the piano. Fundamentals of piano playing, technique and theory will be explored and further developed with beginning level piano repertoire. Students will enjoy playing on electric keyboards, explore MIDI and will also have an opportunity to play on mid-sized upright pianos. All piano books provided. Prerequisite: None AMM3M1 Music and Computers I - Introductory, Grade 11, University / College Preparation In this introductory course students will explore the world of creating and arranging music using a synthesizer and a computer. No previous musical experience is necessary. Students will learn the fundamentals of music composition through project-based activities and will study a variety of genres such as pop, rock, electronic, and film music. Prerequisite: No prerequisite required AMM4M1 Music and Computer II - Experienced, Grade 12, University / College Preparation This course will continue to expand on the work begun in AMM3M1. Students will gain a more in depth knowledge of MIDI sequencing and have opportunities to apply it to more extended projects such as film scoring, jingle writing, and composing/arranging for live ensembles. InstrumentalAMI201 Instrumental Music II, Grade 10, Open This course will continue to emphasize and build upon the performance level achieved in grade 9. The focus will be on improving ensemble playing skills and individual instrumental proficiency – expanded range, richer tone quality, greater flexibility and a more refined technique. Further skills in music reading and listening will be developed. Music played will cover a broad spectrum of musical styles. All students will play in the Intermediate Band.Prerequisite: AMI101/102

AMI3M1 Instrumental Music III-Grade 11, University/College Preparation Year three of instrumental music continues to emphasize excellent in individual performance as well as in ensemble playing. Musical styles such as jazz, classical and contemporary, will be explored in greater detail. Students will continue to further their knowledge of musical concepts and increase their music reading skills. Listening skills will be further developed and the compositional component will include using electronic instruments to write musical accompaniment. All students will play in the Senior Concert Band.Prerequisite: AMI2O1

AMI4M1 Instrumental Music IV-Grade 12, University/College Preparation This course will culminate four years of music study with an intensive program including large and small ensemble work in jazz, classical and popular music. Listening, music reading and compositional skills will continue to be developed. All students will play in the Senior Concert Band and have the option to play a solo or duet with accompaniment, tutor a junior player, explore the world of MIDI or perform with a chamber group of their choice. Prerequisite: AMI3M1

AMR4M1 Music, Repertoire, Instrumental Grade 12, University / College Preparation This course is for students who want to continue their involvement in playing in the band, but have already completed AMI4M1. Students will pursue a number of self-directed musical projects in conjunction with performing in the Senior Band.Prerequisite: AMI4MI

Vocal Dramatic Arts and ProductionADA201 Dramatic Arts, Grade 9 & 10, Open Drama students will actively explore dramatic forms and techniques, and will be responsible for creating and presenting dramatic works. Attendance at the school play is mandatoryPrerequisite: None

ADA3M1 Dramatic Arts, Grade 11, University / College Grade 11 drama students will apply various skills and acting styles to prepare original and selected scripts. Students will explore and analyze theatre conventions and works from the turn of the century. Attendance at the school play is mandatory.Prerequisite: ADA101 or ADA201

ADA4M1 Dramatic Arts, Grade 12, University/College This course culminates four years of drama studies with an intensive program of applying theory and knowledge in genuine theatrical contexts by working as actors, playwrights, and discerning audience members.Prerequisite: ADA3M1

ADD3M1 Production, Grade 11, University/College This course requires students to create and present a variety of dramatic works. They will have hands-on experience with various aspects of dramatic arts productions, including performance, set design, l igh t ing , costumes, s tage and techn ica l management and marketing.Prerequisite: ADA101 or ADA201

AMV201 Vocal Music II, Grade 10, Open Always wanted to sing but missed out on taking Gr. 9 Vocal? Or were you enrolled in Gr. 9 Vocal and want to continue your vocal musical development? Year two of vocal music will further develop singing ability, your vocal techniques and skills in music reading. There will be performing opportunities in concerts by singing in choir, small ensembles or solo opportunities. Repertoire will include a variety of styles and many performance opportunities will be available to students.Prerequisite: None

AMV3M1 Vocal Music III, Grade 11, University/College Preparation In this course, students will continue to learn how to produce and improve good vocal tone quality and performance standards. Theory, listening, tutoring, school concerts and other performances form the balance of this course along with developing their talent. A variety of repertoire is explored. Solo and small ensemble vocal performing opportunities are encouraged.Prerequisite: None

AMV4M1 Vocal Music IV, Grade 12, University/College Preparation Year four of vocal music will see students achieve a higher level of vocal development through advanced work on tone production, stylistic nuances and stage presence. Listening, theory, and sight singing, rhythm skills will continue to be developed. Students will have the opportunity for in depth self-directed creative music projects and gain a greater confidence in performance technique. Solo and small ensemble vocal performing opportunities are encouraged.Prerequisite: AMV3M1

AMR4M2 Music, Vocal, Grade 12, University / College Preparation This course is for students who want to continue their involvement in vocal music but have already completed AMV4M1. This is an opportunity for students to study and identify areas of interests while exploring and developing their vocal expertise. Emphasis will be on achieving performance excellence in repertoire from a variety of styles. Students will sing in the Concert Choir and gain more experience through other performance opportunities. An exciting opportunity to explore more self-directed music interests. Prerequisite: AMV4M1
