The Course for the 7th batch will commence in Mid-August, 2012.

    Brief Details about the Course

The Alternate Training Scheme for Marine Engineersbasically follows the Model Course 7.04 of the IMO and isdivided into Phases as given below (We have given detailsupto Class IV Engineer Officers Examination. More Detailscan be obtained from the META Manual Vol. I & IIpublished by D. G. Shipping). However, we are required to

train upto the third phase only. As new STCW conventionis on the anvil, some of these details (especially fromphase 4 onwards) can change as per the D.G.S. directivesin the coming days. The present intake capacity asapproved by the Director General of Shipping is 20trainees per batch annually.

A Special Note Placement during 2nd phase of ATS

It may be noted that sponsorship of shipping companies isan essential part of this training for 2nd phase. During thisphase, the trainee has to undergo training of 9 months onboard a sea going vessel having a propulsive power ofmore than 750 KW. A shipping company has to sponsorthe trainee, or in other words, has to agree to put him onone of the ships owned or managed by it. Needless to say

this company is providing a valuable opportunity for agood career to the candidate. Sincere hard work andloyalty will be expected in return. It should be noted thatfor the second phase of training when the candidate isrequired to sail on board a ship, the academy acts as afacilitator between the candidate and the shippingcompany for the sponsorship if required. We alsowelcome and in fact encourage a candidate whohas managed to get a sponsorship from any

shipping company on his own, provided he satisfiesall the other entry criteria. The sponsorship for thesecond phase is confirmed by DBMA beforeadmitting a candidate in first phase usually througha letter from sponsoring company statingaccordingly.

The details of the Fees and Estimates of other Expenses

for ATS Course are given in the Prospectus. We do notcharge any fees during second phase/year. Somecompanies do pay stipend to the trainees during secondphase.

It should be noted that DBMA does not give any Degree orDiploma but a certificate on successful completion oftraining. This is recognised by D.G. Shipping as necessaryqualification for appearing at Cl. IV Part A exams. We will

be making efforts to get a Degree or Diploma from aUniversity for this course in the coming days, butpresently we award only a Certificate. For a career as aSailing Marine Engineer, Certificates of Competencyissued by D.G.S. is required and not any degree ordiploma.
