The collection of preserved apartment installations which were designed by the world-wide famous architect Adolf Loos has no equivalent within Europe. Booking of guided tours via www.adolfloospilsen.cz.

Guided Tour 1

Josef and Stepanka Vogl’s Apartment, 12 Klatovska StreetThe interior of Doctor Vogl’s apartment was designed by Adolf Loos in the period of 1928-1929. During the Nazis occupation the house was confiscated and changed into an office building. From the original apartment only a salon with a fireplace and a dining room with yellow travertine walls were preserved. Today, the interiors are furnished with replicas of the original furniture.

Guided Tour 2

Brummel House, 58 Husova Street The most highly-valued and best-preserved of all Pilsen installations was designed by Adolf Loos for Jan and Jana Bummel in 1927. Loos completely changed the outer appearance of the original house, he had all the decorative features on facades removed and added a vertical rectangular extension to the house. The apartment on the first floor was completely preserved, even including a unique set of original furniture designed by Loos. Visitors can go through the whole flat. They visit an entrance hall, a bedroom with a bathroom, a living room, a dining room and a lady salon with a bedroom. During the Communist regime, the house was confiscated. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989 the house was returned to a nephew of the original owners who, after a demanding reconstruction, opened it for public.

Guided Tour 3

Oskar and Jana Semler’s Apartment, 110 Klatovska Street The most famous feature used by Adolf Loos in his designs is so-called raumplan. Nevertheless, of all the installations in Pilsen this feature can be found only in the house in 110 Klatovska Street. The interiors in the house were designed for Oskar and Jana Semler by Adolf Loos’ colleague and follower Heinrich Kulka based on Loos’ concept. Currently, the house belongs to the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen which repairs it step by step. Its aim is to create there a regional documentary centre for architecture.

Apartments with Occasional Access

Hugo Semler’s Apartment, 19 Klatovska StreetIn the spacious apartment of the entrepreneur Hugo Semler on the first floor in the house in 19 Klatovska Street, a dining room, a salon and a music salon have been preserved.

Richard Hirsch’ Apartment, 6 Placheho StreetVilem and Marta Hirsch were the first family who could ‘boats’ about by the Loos’ apartment installation in Pilsen. The interior of their apartment designed in 1907 no longer exists. However, fragments of the original installation designed by Adolf Loos in 1927 for their son Richard have been preserved on the second floor of the same house.

The architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933) belongs among world-recognized architects. He is considered to be one of the co-founders of the world modern architecture. Loos wasn’t only a practical architect but also an important theorist in the field of architecture and to some extent also a philosopher. Loos radically denied artificial decorativism in the architecture and was the very first architect who liberated buildings from decorative features both in their exterior and interior. Loos performed his first installation in Pilsen in 1907 and with various time periods off he worked here until his death in 1933. His clientele was mostly successful Jewish entrepreneurs for whom he designed at least 13 apartment interiors, eight of which have been preserved until the present day. Based on the opinion of experts, this collection of his work is a priceless piece within the context of entire world architecture.

Vilem and Gertruda Kraus’ Apartment, 10 Bendova StreetThe interior of Kraus’ family apartment from 1931 ranks among the most beautiful Pilsen apartment installations by Adolf Loos. The most precious part of the apartment consists of a salon and a dining room which both have walls covered by marble and which feature opposite mirror walls creating an effect of an infinitely multiplied reflection. Kraus’ bedroom with inbuilt furniture is also highly-valued. The contemporary dominant of the entrance hall is formed by a large-format photograph of the architect Loos. The apartment is suitable for organizing cultural events.
