WelcomeWhile the completion of your secondary schooling undoubtedly remains your immediate focus, it is worth taking some time to consider the next step in your journey of life-long learning.

The key to realising your goals is to match the most suitable qualifications with your abilities and ambitions.

Not only is a university education increasingly essential in gaining access to today’s skilled workforce, it will enable you to tailor your personal interests and passions into a rewarding and sustainable professional career. It should also be a time for your development outside the classroom, to experience new cultures and friendships and add to the wealth of experience that will set you apart.

Here at the University of South Australia we pride ourselves on educating modern professionals through programs that are specifically designed to reflect industry requirements. Indeed, our graduate employment rates are the best in South Australia and exceed the state and national averages.

UniSA also enjoys an outstanding international reputation. The University of South Australia is ranked among the world’s top 50 universities under 50 years of age by both the QS and THE (Times Higher Education) global rankings. We are the youngest Australian university on the THE list.

With around 33,500 students we are South Australia’s biggest university. We offer more than 400 degree programs in business, education, arts, social sciences, health sciences, information technology, engineering and the environment. We are also a truly international institution that proudly celebrates cultural diversity, with a worldwide alumni family of more than 180,000.

At the University of South Australia, you will discover a vibrant on-campus culture and join an active and diverse student population. This blend enriches the intellectual and social life of our academic community, providing both an enhanced student experience as well as the ideal teaching and learning environment for cultivating tomorrow’s leaders and innovators.

I hope that you will consider joining us and I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.

More than just a degreeTabby RyanBachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement and Health Studies), Bachelor of Education (Middle and Secondary)

At the start of her UniSA degree, Tabby Ryan had never been overseas. In fact, she hadn’t even planned to go to university. At the end of her degree, she had travelled to Cambodia, Kenya, and Indonesia as well as Aboriginal communities within Australia.

‘I had always wanted to travel and experience the world and felt that being a student for four years would greatly limit my capacity to do this,’ says Tabby. ‘However, after joining the Global Experience (GE) program, I was able to benefit

from a travel grant to help fund volunteering in a remote Kenyan village, a study tour to Indonesia, and a trip to a remote Indigenous community. I also gained recognition for previous volunteer work teaching in Cambodia and in an Aboriginal community, and benefited from lots of professional development through a variety of events and activities.’

Tabby says that the start of university can be overwhelming with so many opportunities available. ‘It’s really easy to get bombarded with all the things you can do but I think the stand-out thing you can do at UniSA is the GE program. The way they have structured the program, it’s suitable for anyone to have a go,’ she says. ‘UniSA students are so privileged to be able to join GE at no cost and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to leave uni with more than just a degree.’

Help identify interests and career choicesTogether with your child explore their interests, strengths and skills. Consider past work experience, volunteer work and talking to people in different professions to determine their preferred areas.

Once interests, strengths and skills have been narrowed down, help them choose a career that will allow them to express these points. This may take some time. In fact many students change their minds regularly and even change degrees.

explore and choose university preferencesEncourage your children to attend events at UniSA during Open August. This includes Open Day and a series of information events which will be their (and your) chance to ask questions, listen to lectures about study options and tour our campuses.

Help your child research, perhaps with assistance from a School Career Adviser, their selected programs and identify specific entry requirements (such as ATAR scores, prerequisites and assumed knowledge). Make sure they are able to meet each of these prior to applying and take into consideration that students may be eligible for bonus points.

life at universityThe transition from school to university can be quite dramatic. At university, students are expected to be more independent and are treated like an adult.

UniSA has a friendly and flexible environment that allows students to succeed in their studies. We support students to have fun, make new friends and enjoy life. Read more about life at university and the support services and facilities available on pages 8–17.

Costs The costs of university will be different for everyone. Check out our fees and finances (right) for more detail.

Encourage your child to explore and apply for scholarships to help with costs, see next page.

See table for a breakdown of student contribution amounts for 2014, as per Australian Government guidelines.

UniSA CollegeUniSA College offers a range of diplomas and a Foundation Studies program which can provide a pathway to the university degree of your choice. UniSA College programs build your academic skills and pre-requisite knowledge, preparing you for degree-level study.

diplomasDiplomas offered through the UniSA College are two-year programs designed to provide a pathway into a university degree for those who may not meet the requirements for direct entry. You will learn the skills required for successful tertiary-level study as well as gain discipline-specific skills and knowledge with support from UniSA College staff. Studying a diploma allows you to build networks as you study alongside other undergraduate students in your chosen field.

Upon successful completion, you will graduate with a university diploma qualification. You will then continue seamlessly into the second year of your undergraduate degree at UniSA.

Foundation studiesUniSA Foundation Studies is a free*, one-year program with no entry qualifications required.

Students learn the skills required for successful university-level study. On completion of the Foundation Studies program, you can use your grade point average (GPA) to apply for entry into a university degree. This process is competitive. Foundation Studies students are taught on campus by UniSA staff, and have access to our full range of support services, leading to a smoother transition into a UniSA degree.

* Foundation Studies students are not charged course fees but may be required to pay student amenities fees as determined by the Australian Government.

Guaranteed EntryMany programs offer guaranteed entry with a certain Year 12 score through UniSA Preferred. If your ATAR meets the UniSA Preferred qualification for that program, you have met any prerequisites, and you have listed the program as your first preference then you’re in. It’s guaranteed. UniSA Preferred also applies to TAFE/RTO diplomas or higher qualifications. Check the program table on pages 26-28.

Bonus Points - entry in 2015Boost your chances of gaining entry when you apply to study with UniSA Advantage, our two-tiered bonus point scheme. As a Year 12 student you could receive up to a total of nine Achievement and/or Aspire points, in line with SACE requirements.

achievement bonus pointsAt UniSA we believe that studying subjects in Year 12 that relate to your preferred degree will prepare you better for university.

You will automatically receive two achievement bonus points (up to a maximum of five) if you score a C- or better in subjects that are relevant to the UniSA program you apply for. These may be SACE Year 12 tertiary admission (TAS), interstate equivalent or International Baccalaureate subjects.

Achievement bonus points are awarded by degree program. For example, the points you receive when applying to the Bachelor of Pharmacy would be different to the points awarded for the Bachelor of Commerce. See our program table on pages 26-28 for more information.

aspire bonus pointsStudents who attend a school recognised by UniSA as under-represented, regional and remote are eligible for five automatic bonus points.

Students on a school card (or state equivalent), Youth Allowance and/or Health Care Card or or Low Income Health Care Card and who do not attend a recognised Aspire school can apply by downloading an application form.

The total number of UniSA bonus points a student can receive is capped at nine.
