GettingtoPekingUniversityfromBeijingCapitalInternationalAirport

1) Cab(knownas):Uponexitingtheairport,headtotaxistands,whichwillbeclearlydemarcated.Whiletherehasbeenaneffectivecampaigntoreducethesoperatingattheairportsnow,illegaloperatorsmaystillapproachyouifyouhavea lot of luggage. Do not follow illegal taxis (known as),especially if you are unfamiliar with Beijing. You should rejectthem. At least for now, stick with taxis that have a 2.00RMBstickerontheirwindow.TherearemanycaboperatorsinBeijing,allofwhichhavethislabel.

i) ToShaoyuan:Tellthetaxidrivertogotoandenterviathe;remembertoshowthesecurityguardsyourletterofacceptancesothattheywillallowyou to enter. Upon entering the school, go straight and then turn right at the firstjunctionthatyousee.Thengostraightfor another30plusmetersbeforeturningrightagaininto. The cabride will cost about 110RMB (inclusive of10RMB ofhighwaytoll),andthejourneyshouldlastforaroundanhour,dependingontraffic.

ii) To Zhongguanxinyuan (ZGXY): ZGXY is located along .However,themaingatealongisnotopenedyet,hencepleasetellthecabdrivertoenterZGXYvia.Showingtheletterofacceptancewouldallowyoutoenter ZGXY.Uponarrival, please proceed toZGXYBlk 9 tosettle accommodationrelatedissues.ThecabfareanddurationtoZGXYshouldbesimilartothatofShaoyuan.

2) Bus(knownas):Takeanairportexpressbusfromthe airportto(route5).Fromtheterminal,takeacabto,andentervia(seeabove)forthoseheadingtoShaoyuan.ForthoseheadingtoZGXY,tellthecabdriverto enterZGXYvia(seeabove).

Thebus fare costs 16RMB while thecabride should cost between 12-14RMB. The busjourney should last for 45 minutes, while the cab ride should not take more than 10minutes. It is not difficult to get a cab at the terminal as there should be many cabswaitingatthesideforyou.ThisisagoodoptionifyouarecomingaloneandwillarriveinBeijingwithinthe operationhoursof theairport bus. Forthisroute,the firstbusleavestheairportat8:30amandthefinalbusleavesat21:30. The two places of accommodation on campus are Shaoyuan and Zhongguanxinyuan(ZGXY). Asof the 2010FallSemester,all incoming CGS scholars whochoose tostay oncampuswillhavetostayatBlock5ofZGXY,whilenon-CGSscholarscanchoosetostayat

eitherShaoyuanorZGXY.X-Visaholderscumforeignstudentsarerequiredtoapplyforaresidencepermitwithin30days afterthey touch down in Beijing. Please proceed to the Overseas Student Office,Floor1,Building3fortheresidencepermitapplication.

Whenever you change your passport, visa orresidencepermit,youneedtocheckinwiththeteacheragain.

Supermarkets

andarethe2mainsupermarketsinschool.While relatively small in size, they do stock mostnecessities andemergencypurchasesthat you mightneed. There is alsoaCarrefour () nearschool,locatedat whichis a10-minutecabride fromschool, as well as 2s, one a 10 minute walkfromthe, the other alongonthewayto.Thereisanothersupermarketatand one atthe basement of U-centre. Thereare many fruit stalls withinschool,aroundandinsidethe,whichisnear.Additionally,thereisa(5minutebikeridefromthewestgateoftheschool,)openfrommorningstoearlyafternoon,thatsellsfreshfruits,vegetablesandmeatetc.essentiallyawetmarket.

Water

TapwaterinChinaisnotpotablesomostofuswouldpurchaseawaterdispenser.Barrelsofwatercanbepurchasedfromat62767007.Afreewaterdispensercomeswithevery30barrels of water purchased. Of course, you can also purchase your water dispenser fromCarrefour (which would definitely be better than the one which comes free). These waterdispensers costs anything between 99RMB and 399RMB, depending on their functions, likemakingcoldwaterinadditiontothederigourhotwaterfunction.Ifyoudonotwanttouseawater dispenser, the other alternative would be to buy big bottles of mineral water fromschoolCarrefourbutthatwoulddefinitelybemoreexpensive.

Laundry

For those living in Shaoyuan, we usually go to and to purchase second-handwashing machines. The washing machinesare usually sharedamong a few people (about 5,usuallythoselivingonthesamelevel)andwillbeputtogetherwithotherwashingmachinesat

the common washing area. A second-hand washing machine costs about 200-300RMB. Theotheralternativeistosendallyourlaundrytotheinschool.Eachload(5kg)costsabout10RMB. There are many laundry services within school, including dry-cleaning, pressing,washing, as well as tailors to mend spoilt zips or the like. There are more professionaldry-cleanersatand,ifyouwanttolookafteranicesuit.

ForthoselivinginZGXY,washingmachinesareprovidedbyZGXY,hencethereisnoneedtobuysecond-handmachines.Thereare2machineslocatedoncertainlevels,andallyouneedtodoistopayacertainamountofmoneytousethemachine(amountstillcurrentlyunknown).

USD can be changed into RMB at the ICBC branch in school;however,itdoesnotallowSGDtobechangedintoRMB.ForPKU,youwillneedtogotothemainICBCbranchoutsidetochangetheSGDinyourbankaccountintoRMB.ForTHU,headtotheBOCbranchatC.

Therearenomoneychangers(likethosewehaveinSingapore)inChinasoallcurrencyexchangecanonlybedonein banks.In fact, it isrecommendedthat yougototheBOCwhenever you needtoexchangecurrencies.
