Strength in PanelsAs a leading importer and distributor of panel products, Timbmet offer an extensive range including veneered boards, melamine faced boards and marine plywood as well as a range of ‘specials’ such as flexible MDF and plywood, and fire retardant products.

We constantly source new products to add to our wide panel portfolio. New additions include:

Egger Zoom Range As an Egger Platinum Distributor we now stock all 112 decors in the current Egger Zoom Eurodekor range in 18mm MFC with matching 2mm ABS edging tape all under one roof.The range is further enhanced with a range of 8mm MFC and 18mm MF MDF boards as well as 0.4mm and 0.8mm ABS edging tapes.

Egger Laminate We have added Egger laminates to our stock range. All 112 decors are in stock to match our 18mm MFC range with a further 126 decors available to order.

Fire Retardant Plywood, MDF and Timber As part of our commitment to quality and safety we have introduced a range of high performance, fire retardant treated panels, available from stock and ready for delivery in 48 hours. Timbmet are one of only two UK suppliers to stock an approved, London Underground (LUL) branded, Dricon, fire retardant treated plywood.

KoskiDecor A Finnish birch plywood with a smooth white melamine finish both sides, KoskiDecor can be used in a wide range of joinery and furniture applications.

Finsa Iberpan 400 Oak Veneered Lightweight MDF board is 40% lighter than standard MDF and stocked exclusively by Timbmet in the UK.

DecoGloss A high gloss acrylic finished board, available with complimentary or matching edging. Including a new, extended range of decors.

Aquamura A wall panelling system made from WBP (Class 3) Birch Plywood faced with a decorative laminate. Including a new range of decors.

Construction Product RegulationThe Construction Product Regulation (CPR) came into force on in July 2013, under which manufactures of wood and wood-based products designed for the construction market which are covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or European Technical Approval (ETA) will be required to declare their performance characteristics via CE marking.

To reflect the new CPR, section 7 of the UK Building Regulations has also been amended and adopts CE marking as the primary route to show fitness for purpose in the UK.

It is not envisaged that this change will cause major disruption to the supply of wood products as manufacturers have been working towards these changes for a number of years. However alongside the manufacturers responsibilities, importers and distributors will also have a responsibility to ensure the required information is passed along the supply chain.

The CPR recognises it is not always possible or convenient to include all the information required in a physical CE mark so manufacturers are also required to produce a separate Declaration of Performance (DoP) document for their product to accompany the CE mark.

This DoP is the principle piece of information which is required to be made available throughout the supply chain.

Ways of SlicingThe description of the faces of veneered boards e.g. crown or quarter cut refers to the front face only; the reverse on two-sided boards may be either.

Quarter Cut

Produced by cutting at right angles to the growth rings

producing a straight grained effect.

Crown Cut

Produced by cutting a log in half and then slicing parallel to its centre to produce the crown or

heart effect.

Rotary Cut

The log is rotated around its axis against a knife as if unrolling a carpet. This

produces a continuous sheet with sometimes very wild

characteristics.

Burrs

A natural defect on the outside of the tree and/or its root. Characteristically there are small knots grouped closely

together giving a highly decorative appearance. The veneer is mainly rotary cut.

Important changes from 1st July 2013

The fire performance for all materials to be used in permanent constructions, including wood and wood based panel products, is stated in approved document Part B to the Building Regulations of England and Wales.

From 1st July 2013, under the Construction Products Regulation 2011 (CPR), it has become mandatory for manufacturers to apply CE marking to any of their products which are covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or European Technical Assessment (ETA).

Products covered under harmonised European standards for reaction to fire (EN 11925-2, EN 13823 test methods) supersede all national standards thereby removing any barriers to trade throughout the European Union.

The Euro classification system covered by EN13501-1, allows products under this system to replace any reaction to fire standards previously in place in all individual EU countries. In essence products conforming to Euroclass B and C will replace BS476 parts 6 & 7 known as Class 0 (propagation) and Class 1 (surface spread of flame) respectively.

Euroclass B or CTimber based products are tested to EN ISO 11925 (ignitability test) & BS EN 13823 (SBI or single burning item test). The SBI test records parameters relating to the rate of fire growth, lateral flame spread, total heat release, level of smoke production and number of flaming droplets.

The above test results are evaluated in accordance with BS EN 13501-1 (fire classification of construction products and building elements) and the appropriate Euroclass awarded and a classification report issued. ONLY A CLASSIFICATION REPORT FOR A EUROCLASS FIRE PERFORMANCE IS EVIDENCE OF COMPLIANCE – A TREATMENT CERTIFICATE ALONE IS NOT SUFFICIENT.

The thresholds to achieve Euroclass B are higher than those for Euroclass C and, therefore, if material conforms to Euroclass B then, by definition, it also conforms to Euroclass C.

A common question: Are the new Euroclasses as good as the old British Standards? The answer to this is that they are simply a new set of reaction to fire tests that are deemed as acceptable by Building Regulations as the old British Standards.

Building Regulations dictate the fire performance required, depending upon the location of the fire treated material within the building.

The fire performance commonly required for internal wall and ceiling linings is Euroclass C in accordance with BS EN 13501-1.

The fire performance commonly required in higher risk areas such as external cladding within 1m of a boundary, escape routes and staircases is Euroclass B in accordance with BS EN 13501-1.

PLEASE NOTE - where a Fire Certificate is required for fabricated material, care must be taken to ensure that the total composite will achieve the required result, which can only be determined by appropriate testing. Customers and specifiers must satisfy themselves that the products they chose are fit for the required applications.

EUROCLASS B Fire Retardant Panels

The highest possible level for fire retardant treated wood products. Measurements are based on the rate of fire growth, lateral fire spread, total heat release and smoke production.

Egger Laminate is the perfect material for high traffic areas or where a hard wearing surface is required and is a more cost

effective solution to veneers. It performs better in terms of durability and resistance to scratches and is easier to replace if panels are damaged.

Egger ABS edging for Eurodekor MFC, MDF and Eurolight is colour - and texture matched to Egger boards, ensuring a consistent appearance which can be easily fabricated by hand or with an edge banding machine.

The decors are available in a variety of textures and effects including matt unicolours, woodgrains and abstract glosses.

Our melamine ranges are all FSC or PEFC

certified and are of the highest quality and the Timbmet cutting, bonding, edge banding and CNC services enable us to provide bespoke components to your requirement.

Aquamura Decorative laminate faced birch plywood used as a wall paneling system. Hard-wearing and easily cleaned and maintained, it is an ideal alternative to tiling in bathrooms, changing rooms, hospitals and restaurants.

The EGGER® Range Eurolight® Eurolight boards are revolutionising furniture and interior design with high stability, low weight and reduced raw material usage. Eurolight looks contemporary, substantial and premium, yet is both light and inexpensive.

Eurolight is a rigid honeycomb core sandwiched between two high quality 8mm chipboard panels. It is available as a raw board or White W1000 from stock. Other decors are available to order.

Conditioning Fibreboards / Glossary

| 71Conditioning Fibreboards

Before final fixing, fibreboards should be conditioned to bring their moisture content into equilibrium with their surroundings which helps prevent subsequent movement problems.

Board Conditioning by exposure to air Conditioning with water

Standard Hardboard 3 to 5 days. Ideally 48 to 72 hours, min 24 hours.

Tempered Hardboard 5 to 7 days. As above.

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) Only required if boards have become very dry, 3 days. Not recommended.

Insulating Boards Remove all packaging, 1 to 2 days. Not recommended.

Flame Retardant Board FR Boards contain water-soluble salts so only condition in air. Not recommended.

To condition with water, lay the boards down under cover. With a brush, rub clean water into the back face of the board at the rate of half a litre for a board 2440 x 1220 x 3.6mm. Work from the centre outwards then place them wet side to wet side in a neat stack. The boards should then be allowed to stand for the appropriate minimum length of time given above.

Small PrintQuality Every effort is made to ensure the consistency of our products, subject to natural variations in grain and colour. Natural products do not always match the expectations of the user. Please ensure that all products are inspected prior to processing to establish the visual suitability for the intended use. Claims can only be considered if materials are returned in the same condition as received.

Storage All products should be stored flat on pallets in a dry area before use. Ideally timber and wood based products should have moisture content when installed, close to the moisture content they will attain in service.

Sizes All sizes are nominal unless otherwise stated and are subject to normal trade tolerances.

Stock Not all products are stocked at every branch.

Glossary

BalancerA balancing back of equal or similar density to face veneer to prevent warpage by moisture and/or pulling. The balancer can be of any species and grade.

BM TRADA Q-MARKBy specifying or selecting a Q-MARK product you can be assured it has demonstrated the required performance levels through independent accredited testing or appraisal against exacting requirements.

BRE Building Research EstablishmentBRE carries out research, consultancy and testing for the construction and built environment sectors in the United Kingdom.

BREEAM Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment MethodA scheme to award points for environmental good practice in buildings other than houses. These points result in a building rating from Good to Excellent. This is applicable in England only. North America has a similar scheme called LEED.

CARB 2 compliantThe Californian Air Resources Board (CARB) system measures the airborne emissions rather than the amount of formaldehyde in the board – emerging as the standard in the market. The CARB 2 regulation is established as the toughest production standards in the world for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panels.

CE-MarkCertificate European – all wood based panels intended for use in construction must be CE-Marked in accordance with EN 13986.

CE2+CE2+ is awarded to plywood which has normally undergone Attestation System 2+ demonstrating it is suitable for use in structural applications. An independent organisation must test products to ensure they conform to this guarantee.

CE4+The CE4+ mark demonstrates that all tests for non structural use have been conducted. No independent organisation is involved with these tests.

Chain of Custody (CoC)A generic phrase for systems that allow traceability of wood through the supply chain to the forest of origination.

CPR Construction Products RegulationFrom 1 July 2013, under the Construction Products Regulation 2011 (CPR), it will become mandatory for manufacturers to apply CE marking to any of their products which are covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or European Technical Assessment (ETA).

Crown CutA veneer which gives a more figured face, produced from flat slicing.

DelaminationSeparation of veneers from substrate through failure of the bond.

DoorblankA thick panel usually 45 or 54mm thick which can be trimmed and lipped to produce a finished door. They are normally a solid timber or solid chipboard core faced with either plywood or MDF ready for finishing.

DoPDeclaration of PerformanceA document that provides information about the essential characteristics of a product covered by a harmonised European Standard (hEN) or European Technical Assesment (ETA).

DurabilityNatural durability is the inherent resistance of wood to attack by wood destroying organisms.

Fire Resistance/Fire RetardantA measure of the ability of a product, when part of a complete structure to prevent the passage of fire from one area of a building to another. Panel product fire resistance is identified under the Euroclass B & C system, whereas doors are normally measured in units of half hour.

Fire Door 30 (FD30)This identifies the door as guaranteeing to prevent the passage of fire from one area of a building to another for 30 minutes, when part of a complete structure. This is certified under the BM TRADA Q Mark Third Party certification scheme.

Fire Door 60 (FD60)This identifies the door as guaranteeing to prevent the passage of fire from one area of a building to another for 60 minutes, when part of a complete structure. This is certified under the BM TRADA Q Mark Third Party certification scheme.

FSC Forest Stewardship CouncilFSC is an international, non-governmentalorganisation dedicated to promoting environmentally appropriate, socially benefical and economically viable management of the world’s forests.

Harmonised StandardA principle European standard, made by CEN in accordance with a mandate from the European commission, consolidating the harmonised European requirements of a defined building product or group of building products. In the case of wood based panels, the Harmonised Standard is EN 13986.

MR Moisture ResistantMR boards are treated to protect the product against moisture and high humidity.

PEFC Programme for the Endorsement of Forest CertificationAn international forest certification scheme.

Quarter CutA veneer with a straight grain face produced by quarter slicing.

Sheet LengthDimension in the direction of the grain of the face of the sheet.

Sheet WidthDimension perpendicular to the direction of the grain of the face of the sheet.

SubstrateBase panel onto which veneer lay-ons are applied.

TDCA Timber Decking and Cladding AssociationAn independent technical and advisory organisation. It is focused on the promotion of quality materials, installation best practises and aftercare of timber decks, associated landscape structures and timber cladding.

TRADA Timber Research and Development Association.

WBP (Class 3) Weather and boil proofPlywood that is suitable for exterior environments; it is manufactured with water resistant adhesives and can resist a certain amount of moisture. WBP (Class 3) plywood requires paint or varnish to protect the outer veneers and edges from the elements.
