Julio Le Parc began to experiment with light in 1959. Originally, light was the means of giving a concrete form to several of his concerns, including the desire to create works in perpetual transformation. The result is “a constant and unpredictable game of light and shadow.” For the artist, the aim of these incredibly beautiful yet simple works is to “initiate or pursue the destruction of traditional notions about art, its elaboration, presentation and appreciation.” D.B.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Julio Le Parc decided to create works whose appearance would alter according to the viewer’s movements. The viewer is directly involved in the artist’s creative process, as his proximity to the work literally endows it with life. In Cloison à lames réfléchissantes (1966-2005), an image (geometrical shapes, whose uniform repetition enhances the possible variations and deformations) and/or the image of the spectator as he/she passes behind the work are fractioned and multiplied, creating a feeling of confusion. » D.B.

The “Modulations” are a striking example of the great diversity of Le Parc’s work. The artist seeks out the ways in which he has revised or abandoned theories he had promoted previously. First in black and white, then in colour from the end of the 1970s, paintings of grids, undulations or light beams, evoke a ghostly intuition: “An immaterial presence floats there, a few centimetres from the painting, or occasionally behind it, in a world that must be entered.” D.B.

Julio Le Parc has constructed two large mobiles, large works interspersed in the exhibition space, from the entrance hall to the heart of the museum. With a great economy of means, the artist explores the notions of movement and instability. He relies on the reflection of neighbouring images and of light in movement on small forms made of Plexiglas or of metal, connected simply with string. Through his immersive practice and by eliminating reference points, he alters our perception of and our relation to the scale of the space. D.B.

Mike Kelley

Mike Kelley (1954-2012) who died prematurely last year was one of the most outstanding artists of his generation, for the diversity of his erudite work, nurtured by popular culture. The influence of psychoanalysis, the obsession with suppression and repression, give it an irony of a melancholy nature. On several occasions Mike Kelley said how important reading Roussel had been for his work. The series of works Kandors, started in 2000, evokes an episode in the childhood of the hero Superman; after his parents have sent him away from their planet Krypton, he transports his native city Kandor with him, miniaturized in a bottle. With Exploded Fortress of Solitude (2011), the cave is the scene of regression, a return to childhood, and memory put into a bottle, a simultaneous source of enchantment and terror.F.P.

Revue « Locus Solus »

Set up by the American writers John Ashbery, Harry Mathews, Kenneth Koch and James Schuyler, the short-lived literary journal Locus Solus took its title from Roussel. Published in Paris between 1961 and 1962, the journal formed a bridge between French authors, both historical and contemporary, and writers from the New York School and the Beat Generation. In the 1950s Ashbery was one of the first people to inquire into the work of Roussel with a view to writing a thesis, meeting a number of the people who had known him. Subsequently he translated Roussel and had his work published in the United States, influencing many writers and artists. Harry Mathews became a member of the OuLiPo, and together with Georges Perec wrote Roussel et Venise. Esquisse d’une géographie mélancolique [Roussel and Venice. Outline of a melancholy geography], published in 1977, an erudite and satirical pastiche of the critical discourse devoted to Roussel. F.P.

Bolstered by his artistic and scientific training, Hicham Berrada (b. 1986, lives and works in Paris) combines intuition and knowledge, science and poetry to present the changes and metamorphoses of a chemically or mechanically activated “nature.” From the laboratory to the studio, through chemical experiments and performances, Hicham Berrada explores in his work scientific protocols that closely imitate various natural processes and/or climatic conditions. An authentic chemical theatre, Présage is the result of a performance in which the artist, by combining various chemical products in a beaker, creates a chimerical world animated by his manipulations. These transformations of matter, simultaneously filmed and projected on-screen, immerse the audience in a world of fascinating colours and shapes. These experiments result in scale models of living organisms, which are then set in resin to become veritable still-lives.In this manner, Hicham Berrrada creates a personal universe that is intrinsically tied to an experimental method, playing on its codes and protocols while inviting the audience to experience the original presence of energies and forces emerging from matter. Much more than mere formal artifice, this work brings visitors to an alternate world both living and inert, and suggests that they contemplate and question the notions of creation, nature, and matter.M.M.

HELL AS PAVILION/HELL AS TEXT/HELL AS ART PRACTICE/HELL AS EXHIBITION/HELL AS METHOD/HELL AS MODUS OPERANDI/HELL AS MODUS VIVENDI/HELL AS EXODUS “Hell As Pavilion” is an exhibition that examines the question of “being contemporary” within a culture in crisis. It is conceived as a strange fresco gone wild, an inhabited migrant wall of “horrible mixtures,” which brings together Greek artists from various generations, explores a neglected field of rhizomatic relationships and unexpected affinities, and urges us to “read history in unforeseen ways,” to imagine into existence new mobile and minor networks. With a title inspired by the briefly glimpsed “HELL AS” in Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme, the Greek Pavilion could be understood as a fantasma, a premonition or a twinge of remorse, a disturbing idiorrythmy, the monster (teras) par excellence in the current temps de crises. The European bête noire hangs on a wall in an undetermined borderline condition considered here as a possible tactic; a laboratory of the para-logon (that which lies next to and beyond logos/reason); a precarious position from which current takes on humanism, punishment, radicalization, the collective and the connective can be reexamined. “Hell As Pavilion” can be perceived as a toolbox for the understanding of various Greek paraloga in the rather common and unsettled struggle to “be in” the present; as a chance to consider the viability of deviations, abnormalities and inconsistencies, in the xaos (chaos) of a situation where nations, states and all kinds of entities suspect and monster one another for economic misconduct and “lack of progress.” N.A.
