"The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the
Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and
criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him
fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of
other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you
hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify
Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will
be grateful."
2:185
Glory be to Allah the Most High for allowing us to reach the month of
Ramadhan, one of the most sacred months. Salutations to His Messenger,
our Prophet, Guide and Mercy to this world, and his Companions and family
members.
This booklet serves to guide our respective families, in the beloved month of
Ramadhan, in our Teraweeh and Tahajjud prayers, in hopes that we may
inspire the feeling of the mosque at home and for families to confidently
lead and understand these prayers. We hope to increase the sweetness of
these acts of worship when conducting them on our own so that if Allah
wills the mosques to re-open, we will taste the ni'mah of these acts in divine
detail.
We would like to thank all who have assisted us in the compilation of this
guide, may Allah accept your deeds and raise your ranks in the hereafter.
May Allah bless our teachers and guides who have built the foundation of
Islam within us and in the community.

Women and Ramadhan
While others busy themselves with acts of worship and teraweeh, most women spend
a portion of Ramadhan in the state of menstruation. According to Matn al-Ghayat wa
al-Taqrib by Abu Shuja' al-Asfahani, it is not permissible for a menstruating woman
to pray, fast, read or hold the Qur’an and this may lead to some who are in that state,
to feel deprived of the rewards of the blessed month of Ramadhan, especially as they
are unable to perform teraweeh. However, women can still take full advantage of the
blessed month of Ramadhan and its bounties to draw closer to Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, insyaaAllah!
Here are 7 things you can do if you cannot pray:
1) Make abundant dhikr and du’a
“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.”
(al-Baqarah, 2:152)
According to Imam an-Nawawi, it is permissible for women to recite (aloud) familiar
du’a that are taken from the Qur’an with the intention of reciting the supplication for
protection and remembrance. Therefore, if you cannot pray or fast, you can increase
your dhikr and du’a to build a stronger connection with Allah in the month of
Ramadhan. There’s many ways you can invoke the name of Allah, be it through praise
(subhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Laa ilaahaa illallah, Allahu akbar), or through supplications
such as:
ربنا ال تزغ قلوبنا بعد إذ هديتنا وهب لنا من لدنك رحمة إنك
أنت الوهاب
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobn ba’da idh hadaitana wa hab lana
milladunka rahma innaka antal Wahhab
2
“Oh Allah, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us
from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”
(Ali ‘Imran, 3:8)
2) Make plenty of selawat
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels (ask Him to do so). O you
who have believed, ask (Allah to confer) blessings upon him and ask (Allah to grant him)
peace.”
(al-Ahzab, 33:56)
Increasing one’s love for Rasulullah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص through reciting selawat can also bring about
tremendous benefit and blessings. For examples of selawat you can recite, do refer to
the selawat section of this booklet. One may also recite litanies and qasidahs to
invoke a greater connection with the Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص. It is also good time to
read up on his stories, reflect upon his noble nature and express your gratitude to
Allah for sending mankind the Mercy to the Worlds ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص.
3) Listening to Qur’an and ponder about its meanings
“So when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that
you may receive mercy.”
(al-A’raf, 7:204)
The Qur’an brings forth many blessings, even to those who just listen to it. Thus,
even if you may not be able to pray or recite the Qur’an, you may still receive the
shower of Allah’s blessings and mercy by listening attentively to it. To better aid
your understanding and connect deeper to its glorious content, you can also read the
translations or read up tafsirs of your favourite surahs. It is stated in the Qur’an that,
“Indeed, in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is
present (in mind)” (Surah Qaf, 50:37). May the unveiling of meanings in the Qur’an
bring you to great reminders of His Magnificence and guide you on His straight
path!
3
4) Prepare sahoor and iftar for others
The Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص. said:
“Whoever gives iftar to one who is fasting will have reward like his, without that detracting
from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.”
(Tirmidhi)
Feeding others is an act that brings great rewards, and you can still reap the benefits
of fasting by serving iftar to those who are fasting. You can also wake up a little
earlier to prepare some sahoor for your family and spread goodness to those who are
preparing for the day of fast.
5) Seeking knowledge
“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
(Surah Taha, 20:114)
Use the extra time and energy you have from not fasting and praying to increase
your knowledge of the faith. Search for good, reliable and useful knowledge, be it
online, from books or teachers, and stay away from content that brings you no
benefit. You may also recite this du’a in search of good knowledge:
اللهم إن ي أعوذ بك من علم ال ينفع وقلب ال يخشع ودعاء ال
يسمع ونفس ال تشبع
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'ilmin la yanfa'u, wa qalbin la yakhsha'u, wa du'a'in la
yasma'u, wa nafsin la tashba'u.
O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, a heart that is
not humble, a supplication that is not heard and a soul that is not satisfied.
(Darussalam)
4
6) Increasing Sadaqah (charity)
“If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give
them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds
(thereby). And Allah, with what you do, is (fully) Acquainted.”
(Al-Baqarah, 2:271)
We are surrounded by countless blessings, so do remember to share these blessings
with others in the month of Ramadhan through sadaqah (but don’t forget your zakah
too). Sadaqah can come in many forms, from helping your mother in the kitchen to
donating part of what is in your wallet to the nearby mosque. Take some time to help
your family set up the prayer mats for isya’ and teraweeh too. Be kind, give kindly and
spread goodness in this blessed month of Ramadhan, as the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص has mentioned:
“Enjoining, all that is good is Sadaqah.” (al-Bukhari)
7) Increase repentance
Ramadhan is the best time to increase your repentance to Allah. Use the time when
other are praying or breaking fast to ask Allah to forgive you and your loved ones and
to keep you from returning to sin. One of the best times to make du’a and ask for
forgiveness is the time between the adhan and iqamah as it was said by the Messenger
of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, “The supplication made between the Adhan and Iqamah is not rejected.”
(Darussalam). A supplication you can recite to ask for forgiveness that Rasulullah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص
recited in the last ten days of Ramadhan is:
اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عن ي
Allahumma innaka ‘afuqqun tuhibbul ‘fwa fa’ fu ‘anni.
“Oh Allah, you are the Forgiver, You love to forgive, so forgive me.” (Tirmidhi)
5
What is important to remember is that these are not only limited to the period during
which you are unable to pray and should also be practiced on top of the obligatory acts
of worship. May Allah allow all of us to attain istiqomah and continue these practices
beyond the beautiful month of Ramadhan as well, ameen.
Teraweeh
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated,
Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said “He who prays during the night inRamadan with faith, and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins
forgiven”

What is Teraweeh?
Teraweeh is a special sunnah (encouraged) prayer that is only performed in the blessed
month of Ramadhan. It is done after isyak prayers and can be done in congregation,
or alone. Teraweeh comes from the root word “raaHaah” (راحة) in Arabic which means
“rest”. This is demonstrated in the prayer by it being broken down into sets of 2 rakaat
with a total of either 8 or 20 rakaat.
In the last year of the Prophet’s ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص life, he came out one night and prayed Teraweeh.
On that night, some Companions ( عنهم هللا رضي ) prayed with him ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص. The news spread,
and for subsequent nights, more and more Companions ( عنهم هللا رضي ) joined him ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص for
Teraweeh. On the fourth night, masses of people waited for the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص in the
mosque but instead the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص prayed at home by himself. After Fajr, he ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said,
“Nothing prevented me from coming out to you except the fact that I feared that it
would be made obligatory for you.” (Muslim)
The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص also mentioned that “Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadhan
out of sincere faith and seeking its reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins
forgiven.” (Al Bukhari and Muslim)
The Teraweeh prayer is special and holds a lot of blessings, especially since it is only
conducted in the month of Ramadhan. Allah s.w.t opens His Doors of Mercy for us
and we should try our best to reap all the benefits we can get insyaa’Allah.

Tips for Teraweeh
1. If you can read the Qur’an but have not memorised surahs, you may refer to
your phone Qur’an app (place it in your chest pocket or somewhere easy to
reach out to) or a big Mushaf placed in front of you when you are praying.
Just ensure that you do not move more than 2 large motions in prayer, if not
your prayer will be invalid!
2. If you are leading the prayer, prepare some water nearby so you may take sips
in between sets
3. Take turns with your male siblings!
4. If you have memorised some surahs but not enough to cover 8 or 20 rakaats of
prayers, recite your memorised surah in the first rakaat in each set, and Surah
Al-Ikhlas in the second rakaat.
5. It’s okay to repeat surahs! As long as you try your best Insyaa’Allah
6. Focus on quality rather than quantity!
And Allah knows best, Insyaa’Allah.
Qiyamullail’The night prayer
“And as for the night, keep awake a part of it as an additional prayer for you, soon will your Lord raise you to a station of praise and glory”
(Al-Isra 17:79)
38
What is Qiyamullail? The term ‘Qiyamullail’, literally means to ‘stand during the night’ but it refers to when
you spend some part of the night, from after Isya’ till Fajar, to worship Allah. However,
the most preferred time is before sunrise, during the last third of the night.
Worship such as prayers, recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah (zikrullah),
or any acts of worship can be performed. In terms of the syari’ah law, the legal ruling
for performing Qiyamullail is sunnah muakkadah (strongly encouraged).
Why do we perform Qiyamullail? In the earlier phases of prophethood, the Qiyamullail was made mandatory for the
Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), by Allah. Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) taught us that in order for us to
achieve success in our lives, it is important for us to constantly refine and strengthen
our connection with Allah.
It was narrated by Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba ( عنه هللا رضي ) that Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) used to
pray so much that his feet used to become swollen. When he was asked as to why he
prays so much even though Allah had forgiven all his (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)’s sins of the past and those
to come, he would say, "Shall I not be a thankful slave (to Allah)?" (Sahih al Bukhari
6471)
The significance of Qiyamullail is found in a narration by Sayyidina Ali (رضي هللا عنه)
in which Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:
39
"Indeed in Paradise there are chambers, whose outside can be seen from their inside,
and their inside can be seen from their outside." A Bedouin stood and said: 'Who are
they for, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "For those who speak well, feed others, fast
regularly, and perform salat [for Allah] during the night while the people sleep."
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1984)
The significance of Qiyamullail is also stated in the Quran on several occasions:
ا أن يبعثك ربك مقام لك عسى د بهۦ نافلة ومن ٱليل فتهج
ا ) حمود (٧٩م
“And as for the night, keep awake a part of it as an additional prayer for you: soon will your
Lord raise you to a station of praise and glory” (Al-Isra, 17:79)
"O you wrapped in garments! Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. Half of it or a little less
than that or a little more. And recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style.
Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, laws). Verily, the rising by
night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing oneself, and
most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah)" (Al Muzzammil, 73:1-6)
40
Indeed, the more one stands (voluntarily) in front of Allah in the silent depths of the
nights to seek His Help and rely upon Him alone, the more he feels content and certain
of being granted provision. Therefore, the less he relies on people around him or
worries excessively over worldly issues.
Benefits of Qiyamullail It is indeed not easy to perform Qiyamullail especially at a time late at night when
most people are sleeping. Here are a few benefits that can motivate us!
1. It is the best prayer after the obligatory prayers.
Abu Hurairah (رضي هللا عنه) reported that Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "The best month for
observing Saum (fasting) next after Ramadan is the month of Allah, the Muharram;
and the best Salat (prayer) next after the prescribed Salat is Salat at night (Tahajjud).”
[Muslim]. (Riyad as-Salihin)
2. It brings the worshipper closer to Allah.
Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "Hold fast to Qiyam al-Lail, for it is the practice of the righteous
before you, and indeed Qiyam al-Lail is a means of nearness to Allah, a means of
prevention from sin, an expiation for bad deeds, and a barrier for the body against
disease." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3549)
41
3. It includes a special time period where dua is granted.
Jabir (رضي هللا عنه) said he heard Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) say, “There is an hour during the night
in which no Muslim individual will ask Allah for good in this world and the next
without His giving it to him; and that applies to every night.” (Sahih Muslim 757 a)
Adab (etiquette) of Qiyamullail 1. Arrangement to wake up for prayers Even though the prayers of Qiyamullail can be made after Isya prayers, the full reward
mentioned in the Quran and Hadiths refers to worship that is preceded by sleep. This
is also understood from the meaning of Tahajjud, which is the struggle to rid oneself
of sleep.
The best time to perform Qiyamullail is in the last third of the night, which can be
seen in a narration by Abu Huraira (رضي هللا عنه) where Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "Our Lord,
the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when
the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I
may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his
request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?" (Sahih
al-Bukhari 1145)
2. Waking up
Wake up during the night at the time you've chosen and perform your wudhu. If you
make an honest effort to wake up and perform Qiyamullail but accidentally sleep
through the night, don’t be too harsh on yourself.
42
It was narrated from Abu Ad-Darda’ (رضي هللا عنه) who attributed it to Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص):
"Whoever goes to his bed intending to get up and pray qiyam at night, then sleep
overwhelms him until morning, will have recorded that which he intended and his
sleep is a charity given to him by his Lord, the Mighty and Sublime." (Sunan an-Nasa’i
1787)
3. Prayers
As you prepare to do prayers, make an intention of performing it such as “I intend to
pray sunnah Tahajjud, 2 raka’at, because of Allah The Most High.'' Any type of night
prayers such as solat Taubah, Tasbih, Hajat and Isthikharah is also a form of
Qiyamullail.
We will be going through how to perform each of the prayers, but it is recommended
that the first prayer of Qiyamullail would be 2 quick raka’at (Tahajjud), followed by
any other prayer after that. 'A'isha (رضي هللا عنه) reported that when the Rasulullah
stood up at night to pray, he began his prayer with two short rak'ahs. (Sahih (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)
Muslim 767)
Finally, end your night prayers with “Witr” prayers. It is a prayer consisting of 3
rakaat with two salams. This is done by first performing 2 raka’at of Witr prayers
followed by the salam, then continuing it by another one raka’at of Witr, followed by
the salam.
I’m struggling to get up and perform Qiyamullail. Is there anything I can do
that might help?
Here are some ways that could help us to perform Qiyamullail:
43
1. Sincere Intentions We must have sincere intentions in our effort to wake up for Qiyamullail. If our
intentions are sincere, insyaAllah we will have the strength to wake up during the
night to perform Qiyamullail.
Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "The (reward of) deeds, depend upon the intentions and every
person will get the reward according to what he has intended.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6689)
2. Avoid committing sins As has been stated before, sins and bad deeds are the strongest bind and preventer for
anyone to perform Qiyamullail.
A man once asked Ibrahim bin Adham: “Indeed, I am unable to wake up for
Qiyamullail, please give me a cure.” Then, Ibrahim bin Adham replied: “Don’t you
commit sins during the day while stand up for prayer in front of Him at night. Indeed,
the gift of standing in front of Him at night in worship is the greatest honour, and
sinners do not deserve that honour.” (Fasl Al-Khitab Fi Al-Zuhd Wal- Raqaiq (9/400))
Types of Sunnah prayers for Qiyamulail There is a total of 5 types of prayers that can be done during Qiyamullail which are
Tahajjud, Taubah, Tasbih, Hajat and Istikharah.
Tahajjud
Since “Tahajjud” literally means “rising from sleep”, one is highly encouraged to sleep
first before performing Tahajjud, even for a little while. Tahajjud is prayer that is
44
performed at night, for 2 raka’at, though it may be performed for as many as possible
if you wish to do so.
The execution of this prayer is the same as that of the other sunnah prayers. Upon
completion of Tahajjud prayer, supplement it with Witr prayer and end it with
Tahmid, Tasbih, Istighfar and then recite a short du’a.

whatever I concealed or revealed, And You are the One who make (some people)

Taubah This is known as the prayer of repentance. The reason for the prayer of repentance is
if a Muslim falls into sin, whether it is a major or minor sin, he has to repent from it
straight away and it is recommended for him to pray these two rak’ahs. And when he
repents, he should do a righteous deed which is one of the best of deeds, namely prayer.
So, he may draw close to Allah by means of this in the hope that He may accept his
repentance and forgive his sin.
This prayer can be done anytime during the day except for after Subuh and A’sr
prayers. The execution of this prayer is the same as that of the other sunnah prayers.

that your past sins could be forgiven. Alternatively, there are also certain zikr and du’a
for repentance that you may want to recite.

Tasbih
This prayer was once taught by Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) to his uncle Sayidina Abbas bin Abdul
Mutalib (رضي هللا عنه). Tasbih prayer is named this way because one will be reciting
Tasbih for 300 times during this prayer.
If it is done during the day, it should be done with 4 raka’at in with one salam. If it is
done at night, it should be done with 4 raka’at with two salam.

“I intend to pray sunnah Tasbih, 2 raka’at, because of Allah The Most High”
How do I perform this prayer? The steps to perform this prayer are slightly different than that of the other sunnah
prayers. There are various opinions on the recitation in performing the Tasbih prayer.
This is just one of the examples - Recite Surah az-Zalzalah in the first raka’at, surah
al-Adiyat in the second raka’at, surah An-Nasr in the third raka’at, dan surah Al-Ikhlas
in the fourth (last) raka’at.
Below are the detailed steps to perform this prayer:
First raka’at
1. Make niat (intention) to perform the sunnah Tasbih prayer during Takbiratul
Ihram

Istikharah Istikhara literally means "to seek that which is good" and is the third part of a 3-step
decision making process:
1. Preparation - Use your own rationale and assess your circumstances. Do your
own research.
2. Istisyarah (seek advice) - Ask someone of experience and knowledge in the topic
that you are looking for guidance on
3. Istikharah (seek goodness) - Maybe you've narrowed it down but are conflicted
in making your final decision. You want confidence and clarity, and this is
where istikharah finally comes into play
The execution of this prayer is the same as that of the other sunnah prayers.
Niat (intention) for Istikharah prayer

O Allah, I’m asking You for goodness through Your (Infinite) Knowledge, and I’m
asking You for strength through Your Divine Ability, and I’m asking You from Your
Infinite Grace. Because You’re completely able to do it, while I simply cannot. You
know everything, and I do not, and You know everything that’s unseen. O Allah, if
You know that this decision [mention decision here] is good for me in terms of my
religiosity, my worldly life, and afterlife, then decree it, facilitate it for me with ease,
and bless me through it. But if You know that this has bad consequences on my
religiosity, my worldly life, and afterlife, then get it away from me and get me away
from it, and (instead of that) decree what’s better for me, whatever it may be, and make
me content with it.
Hajat The hajat prayer (prayer of intent) is usually done when we ask for a wish for Allah,
whether it is to gain something good for us or to reject something that is bad for us.
Allah says in the Quran:
ستكبرون عن وقال ربڪم ٱدعونى أستجب لكم إن ٱلذين ي
(٦٠عبادتى سيدخلون جهنم داخرين )
And your Lord said: "Invoke Me, [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islâmic Monotheism)]
(and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your (invocation). Verily! Those who
scorn My worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness,
(Islâmic Monotheism)] they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!" (Ghafir, 40:60)

O God, you have heard my words, you have seen my abode, know my birth, and none
of my business is hidden from your knowledge.
I am a poor and needy servant, a servant who seeks help, a fearful servant, who begs
for mercy, who confesses and confesses all his sins to You.
O Allah, I ask You as the poor man asks and I pray to You as the prayer of the despised
sinner.
I beg of You as a timid and blind person, as well as to pray for those who lower their
souls, lower their bodies, their faces, and their nose.
What is Lailatul Qadr?
According to the al-salaf al-ṣāliḥ (السلف الصالح, ‘the pious predecessors'), there is no
night that has been emphasised more than the night of Lailatul Qadr (Night of Decree)
which falls in the month of Ramadhan. This is the night in which Allah began the
revelation of the Quran to Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص). It has the potential, when approached with
sincerity, to grant a person forgiveness and mercy from Allah.
In the Quran, Surah Al-Qadr (97) is dedicated entirely to this night:
ه فى ليلة ٱلقدر ) ـ ك ما ليلة ٱلقدر ) (١إنا أنزلن ليلة (٢وما أدرٮ
ن ألف شہر ) وح فيہا بإذن (٣ٱلقدر خير م ٮكة وٱلر ـ ل ٱلمل تنز
ن كل أمر ) ( ٤رب ہم م
م هى حتى مطلع ٱلفجر ) ـ ( ٥سل
“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur'ân) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) (1) And what
will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is? (2) The night of Al-Qadr
57
(Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allâh in that night is better than
worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months) (3) Therein descend the
angels and the Rûh [Jibril (Gabriel)] by Allâh's Permission with all Decrees, (4) (All that
night), there is Peace (and Goodness from Allâh to His believing slaves) until the appearance
of dawn.(5)
It was narrated that Anas ibn Malik (رضي هللا عنه) said, “Ramadan began, and the
Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said: ‘This month has come to you, and in it there is a night
that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it is deprived of all
goodness, and no one is deprived of its goodness except one who is truly deprived.’”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 1644)
The reason behind Lailatul Qadr
Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) loved his community (ummah) so much and thus Lailatul Qadr has been
described as a gift for us. There is a hadith that states: "The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, was shown the lifespans of the people (who had
gone) before him, or what Allah willed of that, and it was as if the lives of the people
of his community had become too short for them to be able to do as many good actions
as others before them had been able to do with their long lives, so Allah gave him
Laylat al- Qadr, which is better than a thousand months." (Muwatta Malik 706)
The reward of Lailatul Qadr
It was recorded by Ibn Khuzaymah in his hadith collection, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah,
narrated through Salman Al-Farisi (رضي هللا عنه) that Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, “And this is
a month, the beginning part of it (first 10 days) is (full of) mercy/rahma. And its middle
is forgiveness. And its last (10 days) is freedom from the fire.”
58
Is there an exact date? Most scholars predicted it would fall on the odd nights of the last 10 nights of
Ramadan.
Based on a hadith narrated by Aishah (رضي هللا عنه), Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said,
"Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2017)
The truth is, nobody knows exactly the precise night of Lailatul Qadr, and there is
great wisdom behind this. A great scholar Ibn Qudamah writes:
“God has concealed this night from the ummah so that they may strive in seeking it
and performing worship throughout the month in the hopes of catching it. Similarly,
He concealed the hour of special acceptance on Friday so that one would increase in
their supplications throughout the day, and He concealed His Greatest Name (ism al-
a’dham) amongst His Divine Names and His Pleasure with acts of obedience so that
people would strive for them. And He concealed an individual’s lifespan and the Hour
[of the Day of Judgment] so that humanity would continuously strive in good deeds,
being heedful of them.”
Only Allah knows the exact night and therefore, to ensure that we reap the full benefits
of Lailatul Qadr, we should aim to perform Qiyamullail on each of the last 10 nights.
What should I do during Lailatul Qadr? Since Lailatul Qadr is the most blessed night of the year, it would be a shame for us to
miss it! Many scholars mentioned that what’s to be avoided beyond sin is wasting time
on that precious night, unnecessary socializing with people, arguing, shopping, etc.
We should keep in mind that the night technically starts at Maghrib (sunset), and be
59
heedful of how time is spent from that point onwards. If possible, we should strive to
spend the entire night in worship and obedience.
First, by simply praying Isha and Fajr in congregation on that night is enough to fill
its scales. Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) had said, “He who observed the 'Isha' prayer in congregation,
it was as if he prayed up to midnight, and he who prayed the morning prayer in
congregation, it was as if he prayed the whole night.” (Sahih Muslim 656 a)
Furthermore, Imam Malik narrated that he had heard Said ibn al-Musayyab used to
say, "Whoever is present at isha on Laylat al-Qadr has taken his portion from it."
(Muwatta Malik 707)
If we are able to do more than that, the next step would be to perform extra voluntary
prayers during the night. Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) had said, "Whoever established prayers on
the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his
previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901)
There is a special link between the night of Lailatul Qadr and seeking forgiveness from
Allah. It was narrated by Aishah (رضي هللا عنه) where she said ‘O Messenger of Allah,
what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in
it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon,
so pardon me (Allāhumma innaka Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu annī).’”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3513)
60
It was also recorded by Ibn Khuzaymah in his hadith collection, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah,
narrated through Salman Al-Farisi (رضي هللا عنه) that Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, “O people!
When the great, blessed month (Ramadan) comes to you, do lots of these four acts in
it. Two acts with which you would please your Lord and two acts with which you
cannot do without. As for the two which please your Lord, they are the testimony that
there is no God but Allah and the seeking of His forgiveness. As for the two acts that
you cannot do without, you should seek paradise from your Lord and seek protection
from hell fire.”
With these two hadith, comes a zikir that is commonly recited during the month of Ramadan.
نعوذ بك من نة و ج ألك ال س ستغفر هللا ن هللا أ ل ه إ ل إ ل ن شهد أ أ

Selawat
“Indeed, Allah and His Angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed! Ask Allah to send blessings upon him, and salute
him with a worthy salutation”
(Al-Ahzab 33:56)
62
What is Selawat?
ه ن إ ئ كهتهه للا له مه لونه وه الن ب ي عهلهى ي صه ا يها ينه أهيهه ن وا ال ذ لوا آمه صه
وا تهسل يما سهل م عهلهيه وه
Surely, Allah and His angels send blessings to the Prophet. O you who believe, do pray Allah to
bless him, and send your Salām (prayer for his being in peace) to him in abundance. [Surah Al-
Ahzab, 33:56]
Selawat upon Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص means "Prayers of peace and blessings upon our beloved Prophet
Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص".
From the verse above, much can be understood and pondered. One of them being the
meaning of Selawat upon Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص. Amongst the key lessons are as follows:
1. Allah the Exalted establishes the sending of prayers upon Prophet Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص
first Himself, followed by commanding the Angels, and lastly all those who believe
in Him to do the same. No Prophet nor man have been and will never be granted
such an honour, upon whom Allah the Exalted Himself sends prayers of peace and
blessings upon.
2. The next key lesson that relates to us is the honour that one may receive from this
noble command, whereby those who enjoins Allah s.w.t. and the angles in sending
peace and blessings, he too may be granted such an honour as narrated in various
hadiths and works on the matter
3. Imam ‘Abdallah Sirajuddin Al-Husayni mentions in his book “Sending prayers upon
the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص; It’s rulings, virtues and benefits”, that by the aforementioned verse,
Allah the Exalted announces to His servants the lofty station and dignified rank of
63
Prophet Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص with Him. The use of his description as “The Prophet” (An-
Nabi) instead of mentioning him by name is also contrary to the predominant way
Allah the Exalted addresses the other Prophets in the Qur’an (upon all of them be
peace and blessings).“The mention of his description is in order to indicate the
added magnificence, nobility, and lofty rank and position with which Allah has
uniquely granted him ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص to the exclusion of all others... elevating his status above
that of others.”
A companion of the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, Ubayy bin Ka’ab (RA) said, “I once told the Messenger of
Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ‘O Messenger of Allah, I invoke much. What portion should I offer salutations
upon you?’
The Prophet replied, “However much you wish.”
To this I asked, “A fourth?”
He said, “If you wish, but should you increase the number, it will be better for you.”
I then asked, “A third?”
He said, “If you wish, but should you increase the number, it is still better for you.”
I then asked, “A half?”
He said, “If you wish, but should you increase the number, it is still better for you.”
I then said, “Indeed in my invocation, I shall make all of my prayers upon you!”
To this, the Messenger of God replied, “If you do that you will be freed from anxiety and
all your wrongs pardoned.”
[Hadith, recorded by Imam at-Tirmidhi]

O Allah, bestow perfect blessings and complete peace upon our Master Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص,
through whom knots (of hardship) are untied, calamities are averted, needs are
fulfilled, aspirations are attained, the best outcomes are achieved, and the clouds
deliver their rain by virtue of his noble countenance. And (bestow such salutations and
peace) upon his family and his companions at every moment that lasts the duration of
the flickering of an eye and the drawing of a breath and do so to the number of
everything that is known to you.

O Allah, bestow prayers upon our Master Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص and upon the family of our
Master Muhammad, a prayer by means of which we will be saved from every awe-
inspiring harmful thing, and that will take care of all of our needs, and purify us by
means of it from all of our ugly qualities and characteristics, and raise us up by means
of it in Your Presence to the highest of degrees, and cause us to reach by means of it
the extremes of all goodness in our life and after our death

secrets, who reduces grief and confusion, who holds the key to the door of ease; that is
our Leader and Master Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, the Chosen One. And [prayers and peace be
upon] his pure family, and chosen companions, as much as the bounties and grace of
Allah SWT.
