Welcome from the Principal

We’ve designed this guide for parents and Guidance Teachers to show the courses that we offer at South Lanarkshire College for school students.

In response to the Wood Report on the “Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce” we’ve added options for S5 and S6 students to our College programme. These include a range of SQA Higher National units, Higher National unit clusters and Higher level Group Awards in all areas of the College. There are also qualifications available from other Awarding Bodies e.g. City & Guilds and BIIAB. Often success in these subject areas can guarantee entry to full-time South Lanarkshire College courses the following year, giving an alternative route to university. The College has established strong links with universities and has secured guaranteed places from some Higher level courses into second or third years of degree programmes.

Programmes can be designed to allow a variety of modes of attendance depending on the individual needs of the student and the school. All courses offer the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications which provide progression pathways from National 4 through to Higher National levels of study.

We’ve dedicated teams of staff and take great pride in the quality of the programmes that we offer. We’ll work closely with schools and South Lanarkshire Council to make sure that we offer the very best to young people attending South Lanarkshire College. Our campus in the Scottish Enterprise Technology Park in East Kilbride offers a bright, modern learning environment with excellent learning resources and state-of-the-art facilities. SLC has a strong history with origins dating back to 1948. INTRODUCTION

LEARNING ENVIRONMENTAll our staff are approachable and lecturers are available to guide you through your studies. Many departments operate an open learning environment where you can speak with lecturers on a one-to-one basis. There are guidance sessions every week, which you can use to discuss course queries as and when they arise. Help is always on hand when needed.

GUIDANCE TUTORYou’ll also be assigned a course tutor who’ll be available to talk about any aspect of your course and help with course-related questions. You’ll find this particularly useful as it provides a consistent and reliable solution to course-related issues.

The Senior Phase Programme is open to S5 and S6 students from all schools across the South Lanarkshire region Duration and days of courses are given in the appropriate course page (please note duration and days are subject to change to meet class demand) Courses will run subject to demand There are a number of course areas and course choices available to you You should discuss your options with your Guidance Teacher.

How to applyIn consultation with your Guidance Teacher you can apply for one of our exciting courses at SLC.

To apply please complete our application form and pass to your guidance teacher, who’ll make sure we receive your application.

We recommend you submit your application form as early as possible and at least by the end of February if you plan to start college in August.

Quality of Programmes

Our reputation for quality is outstanding. Our Education Scotland reports have consistently shown South Lanarkshire College to be excellent in all areas with significant sector leading practices. In 2015, the College was visited by 44 External Verifiers from three awarding bodies including the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Every report highlighted significant strengths with no areas of weakness. We’re one of only two Scottish colleges in this position.

We’ve a wide range of programmes on offer which lead to qualifications from recognised awarding bodies such as SQA.

Faculty of Business

This is a dynamic, diverse Faculty, offering courses from the mainly practical: Hospitality; Horticulture; Photography - to the largely theoretical: Accounting; Business; Administration; Human Resource Management – with those between, a mixture of these: Travel & Tourism; Working with Communities; Counselling; Interactive Media.

The courses for school students are mainly over one full day or two half days per week for the duration of the academic session. Some are of a shorter duration. All have progression routes detailed in this brochure.

As one of our students you’ll have a dedicated Guidance Tutor as your first point of contact in college, who’ll be on hand to assist you with educational or pastoral issues.

Our full-time qualifications range from SCQF Level 2 for students with additional support needs to Level 10, third year of the Bachelor of Accounting degree for UWS. We’ve courses of varying lengths leading to further study on higher level college courses or onto university second or third year degrees, or directly into employment.

Some of our full-time courses have professional or industry qualifications embedded within them. Some are made up of smaller awards e.g. some HNs comprise Professional Development Awards.

COURSE CONTENTThe NPA in Cyber Security provides foundation knowledge and skills in data security, digital forensics and ethical hacking and provides a skills pipeline into the cyber security industry. This award will encourage you to improve your cyber hygiene and enable you to identify security weakness safely, legally and ethically. This will also help you to contribute more safely to virtual communities.Ethics and the law are fundamental aspects of these awards

Ethical considerations are included in every component unit, and legislative considerations are included in all appropriate units. The aim of the award is to produce knowledgeable and skilled individuals who are aware of the potential misuses of, and unauthorised access to, computer systems but who use these competences for legal and ethical purposes

The Faculty of Care has successfully delivered SQA accredited courses specially designed for schools provision for more than 10 years.

In response to the Wood Report on the “Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce” we’ve created options for S5 and S6 students which have been added to the College curriculum. These include Higher level Group Awards in Care, Childcare and a cluster of Higher National units in Make-up Artistry.

All courses offer the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications which provide progression pathways from National 4 through to HN levels of study.

EDUCATION PROGRESSIONOn satisfactory completion of the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services & Healthcare you’ll be eligible to enter employment with Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration as a Support Worker.
