HISTORY AND REPUTATION

The University of Chester has a long and distinguished history. It was established in 1839 by

a group of prominent local fi gures including Britain’s greatest 19th century Prime Minister -

William Gladstone. We were the fi rst institution in England set up to train teachers and are

one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country pre-dating all universities except

Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and London.

The University has expanded extensively - a £62 million investment programme has delivered

impressive new facilities in Chester and Warrington over the last six years and the University

now off ers a wide range of courses to over 16,700 students at undergraduate, postgraduate

and doctoral levels.

University of Chester is a popular student’s choice. Figures released by the University and

College Admissions Service (UCAS) in February 2011 show that the University of Chester

has attained the fourth highest growth in the number of UCAS applications out of 318 UK

institutions providing higher education!

Our Careers and Employability department has been declared ‘world class’ after being awarded

the maximum fi ve stars in a rigorous assessment by British Quality Foundation. We have an

excellent record of graduate employment with a success rate of 93%. This places the University

2nd in the North West region and 25th in England for graduate employment success rates

– ahead of the University of Oxford (90.2%) and within a hair’s breadth of the University of

Cambridge (93.6%).

In choosing the University of Chester, you will be selecting an institution with a strong learning

tradition, and one which will challenge you to give the best of yourself in your academic work

and your contribution to our student community. In return, we will give you both an unrivalled

foundation and a student experience to remember for life.

LOCATION AND OPPORTUNITIES

When it comes to beautiful cities, Chester, one of eight British Heritage cities, is one of the

loveliest and on every tourist’s ‘must see’ itinerary. Located in the heart of the UK, not far from

Liverpool and Manchester, it attracts over 8 million visitors a year. The city, one of the best

preserved walled cities in Europe, dates back to the Roman times. As soon as you arrive in

Chester you will appreciate its unique atmosphere and sense of history. Chester off ers you

an excellent backdrop for your studies and you will see that Chester Business School, Chester

Campus is ideally placed to furnish you with the skills, knowledge and experience you need to

fl ourish in the world of business and management. Companies such as Airbus, Bank of America,

HBOS, Bristol Myers Squibb, Coca Cola Schweppes and Marks & Spencer all have large scale,

long-term operations based in the immediate area along with a myriad of local businesses

and SMEs and Chester Business School has built strong links with these organisations and the

wider business community. This both enhances the relevance of our degrees and helps our

students to fi nd professional work-based placements.

Our Warrington Campus combines the best of long-established university traditions with

up-to-date modern developments including newly-built learning resource and business

centres. The Campus is host to the North West Media Centre and is 20 minutes away from

Salford Keys – the UK’s second biggest cluster of media and advertising businesses outside

London and the South-East, home of the BBC in the North and some of the world’s biggest

companies in broadcasting and new media technologies. Our Warrington Campus is also

home to the Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club – winners of the 2010 Challenge Cup.

As a result of these fi rm links with the media and sports industries, the University is ideally

placed to provide innovative creative courses and our students fi nd it highly benefi cial

to combine our Business Management, Events Management and Marketing and Public

Relations degrees with other subject areas that correspond more closely with their career

ambitions such as TV or Radio Production, Commercial Music Production, Film Studies,

Our Students Say…

Name: Nan Liu

Country: China

The wonderful experiences I have had at Chester will aff ect

me forever. When I fi rst arrived, I felt I would have a tough

time because of the language barrier however; the tutors

in Chester are really friendly and easy-going! They always

helped me with any problems I had regarding my studies

and other issues involved in settling into student life. I

have made lots of foreign friends and have learnt how to

communicate with them. My course is very interesting and

as I studied it further, I became more convinced that I had

made the right choice. I have certainly learnt a lot of things

that will help my career when I graduate. I have told my

friends about how great it is to study at Chester.

Name: Tamta Gamezardashvili

Country: Georgia

Course: Business Studies/MBA

Chester is a gorgeous city with a friendly atmosphere and the

staff at the university are always willing to help and support

you. I am from Georgia and my university (in Georgia) is a

partner institution of the University of Chester. I studied a dual

degree in Business Studies and am now pursuing MBA, both in

Chester. The staff at the University of Chester contacted me and

gave me a lot of useful advice, which helped me to make the

right decision and come to study at Chester. The most helpful

departments for international students are the International

Offi ce and the Student Support and Guidance Department. Staff

at the Business School are very friendly, always ready to help and

are available to speak with you and give you the right advice and

direction. I was off ered a part-time job within the fi rst week of

being in Chester. This is a great experience as I learnt about the

British culture and am meeting new friends all the time. There

are lots of opportunities for international students here.

Chester is a very safe city for international students. Students

can enjoy their ‘student life’ with a lot of events organized by

the University. There are many clubs and societies which you

can join.

So, don’t miss your chance and don’t hesitate to apply to Chester.

Course: MSc Management with HRM

I found my course very interesting. I learnt to work as part of

a team, supporting and being supported by my colleagues

and it also helped boost my confi dence. My tutors were

fantastic and I say this in all honesty. They made it clear

that they were not there to impose their thoughts on us

but to facilitate our learning. They were very sensitive and

considerate, approachable and always encouraging.

Everything the University says as its ethos is exactly what it

is. Students are made to feel that they matter and are given

every necessary support without indulging them. Chester as

a city is quiet and beautiful - a conducive place for learning.

I was able to get African foods and the cost of living is quite

moderate compared to some other areas.

I hope to be a HRM Consultant in future and I think the

University of Chester has prepared me towards achieving

my dreams.

When I was choosing where to study the location was very

important to me. I chose Chester which is a quiet and safe

picturesque traditional English city. I like that I can get

process positively. The lessons at the University are so well

organised and students have time for self-education. The

University makes a lot of eff ort in supporting students and

trips to diff erent parts of the country throughout the year.

The University of Chester is a university in the truest sense of

the word and it is a place that gives you the opportunity to

evolve yourself in terms of mental and sport activities. Also

the fact that I can study for my degree in one year rather

than two makes me happy as I save time and money.

Our Students Say…

Name: Kyawt Zar

Country: Burma

Course: Business and Marketing/MBA

I have been studying in the University of Chester for almost

5 years now. It may seem such a long time but for me it is as

though only a year has passed. For my undergraduate study,

I did a combined degree in Business and Marketing. It was a

very interesting course and I enjoyed it very much. I chose

this course because my goal was to become an entrepreneur.

To achieve my dream, I am now studying an MBA also

in Chester to gain higher business knowledge. Studying

the MBA has given me a real in-depth knowledge of

management and personal development. The tutors are

always willing to give me help and support. Chester is not

just a great city with an excellent University but also feels

like home to me and I believe for all other international

students as well. Therefore, I just have to say that choosing

the University Chester was defi nitely the right choice for me.

Name: Kunal Barthakur

Country: India

Course: MBA

My experience in University of Chester has been the most

enriching in my life. I have met some awesome people and

made some great friends for life!

The city of Chester is a calm and quiet place suitable for study

environment. Studying abroad has helped me broaden the

horizons of my knowledge and accentuate my personal

goals and aspirations. The MBA programme gave me many

opportunities for enhancing and demonstrating leadership

abilities. The theoretical models covered in the programme

were directly applicable in real world management setting.

The lecturers were very supportive and helped me a lot in

attaining in-depth knowledge of the subjects.

One of the most valuable lessons that I had learnt while

doing MBA was how to manage my time; balancing the

demands of study, part time work and friends.
