Best Western Walworth Castle Hotel near Darlington looks like a real castle but its imposing turrets and arrow slits are designed for decoration not defence. In 1600, when the extraordinary house was being built for Thomas Jenison, all the best families had castles and so the features were added to give it a fashionably grand appearance. ‘As far as we know, it was never used as a defensive fort,’ says the hotel manager. However, a true castle did stand on the site in the 12th century; it was the home of an ancient Norman family, the Hansards, who arrived in England with William the Conqueror.

MANY A STORY TO TELL
bestwestern.co.uk
This 15th century Coaching Inn was once a major posting house and has played host to many famous people. The oldest parts of the hotel date back to at least 1422, when it was mentioned in an article by Tony Scrase on The Inns of Wells.
Over the centuries the Best Western Plus Swan Hotel, Wells has experienced the disputes between the Bishops and the citizens, hosted a feast in honour of Anne of Denmark and witnessed the Age of the Train when the hotel ran its own conveyance to pick up passengers from three local stations. More recently, the hotel has been captured on fi lm, featuring heavily in the box offi ce smash, Hot Fuzz.

A WHOLE LOT OF HISTORY
bestwestern.co.uk
The Best Western Plus Ullesthorpe Court Hotel & Golf Club, Lutterworth dates back to the Domesday Book.
Between 1915 and 1918, the new wing, museum and gallery were converted into an auxiliary hospital caring for twenty sick and wounded soldiers. Robert, the ghost of one of the soldiers, still haunts the building, according to reliable sources!
During World War Two, the hotel was once again requisitioned as an American Serviceman’s Hospital, and hutted military barracks were set up in the fi eld opposite. A young German pilot was shot down over Wolvey and held by the Americans at the hotel.

BEER WITH A HEAD START
bestwestern.co.uk
Old Miner Tommy, Bobby Dazzler and Silver Buckles are just some of the cask ales you’ll fi nd behind the bar of the Stables Restaurant at Beamish Hall Hotel, BW Premier Collection outside Durham. You’d be hard pushed to fi nd fresher beer – they’re brewed less than 20 feet away. When the 18th-century stable block was turned into a bar and restaurant in 2009, head brewer John Taylor suggested to owner David Craggs, that he open a microbrewery – and David agreed, providing John would take the reins. John and his team now produce eight real ales, from IPAs to stouts, all with names relating to the local area.
