Double St. Pete GT winner makes Long Beach debut in Pfaff/Castrol Porsche

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Young Scott Hargrove has always set his sights on competing at the famed Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach which stages its 44th edition next weekend (April 13-15) in the streets of the Southern California harbor city.

The direction of Hargrove’s racing career changed four years ago when he alsodrove a Porsche GT3 Cup sports car in the Canadian Porsche Cup Series to two series championships. Versatile Racer back after 22-year absence at Long Beach in GT4 car

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Legendary motocross champion Jeff Ward, one of the most versatile racers of his time, is anxious to return to the streets of Long Beach after a 22-year absence when he will drive the No. 7 Black Swan Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR sports car in the April 15 Pirelli World Challenge 50-minute sprint race during the 44th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach event.

Ward, 56, has one of the most impressive racing resumes ever seen in North American motorsports history with; seven AMA motocross titles; 56 AMA victories; two X Games Super Moto gold medals; one IndyCar race win (Texas Motor Speedway, 2002);second,thirdandfourthplacefinishesintheIndianapolis500;andseatsinthree LBGP Indy Lights events (1993, 1995, 1996). Jeff went back to motorcycle racing in 2004 and won the AMA Supermoto (dirt and pavement racing) in 2004 and 2006 in his 40s.

Most recently, Ward has competed in off-road trucks and Red Bull GRC Rallycross competition.

Few racers have as diverse a racing career and now the Newport Beach, Calif., competitor will make his GT sports car debut just a few miles from his home when practice opens next week at the 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit near the Long Beach harbor.

“I’mveryexcitedtotaketothestreetsofLongBeach.Streetracingisunlikeanythingelseinmotorsports,”saidWard.“AndthenatureofthePirelliWorldChallengeandtheir sprint racing format means you have to be instantly on the pace and willing to racehard. It’sanopportunityI’vereallybeenlookingforwardto, andIcouldn’tbemore appreciative of everyone at Black Swan Racing and Porsche Motorsport North America for making the opportunity possible.”

Ward still has great memories of his Indy Lights races at Long Beach including battling the late, great Greg Moore in the 1995 event.

“I didn’t racemany times at Long Beach but that 1995 racewithGregwas veryspecial,”saidJeff.“IwasracingGregfortheleadandIwentinverydeepintoturnoneandcouldn’tmakethemove.Islidwayintotherunoffareaandmissedachanceat winning there. Black Swan Racing team principal Tim Pappas, a Pirelli World Challenge regular, was a dirt bike racer in his younger days and Ward was a hero to him. Tim is very excited tohaveJeffjoinhisracingteaminthisyear’sPWCeventatLongBeach.

“It’s great to return to action at LongBeach, especially being joined by a legendlike Jeff Ward,” said Pappas, the Boston, Mass., driver who recently won his class at the12HoursofBathurst inAustralia. “Igrewupasanaviddirtbiker,andJeffwasalways‘theguy’foranykidwholookeduptomotocrossracing,sotohavehimjoinourgroupissomethingwe’realllookingforwardto.TheeventatLongBeachisunlikeanyotherwegoto,andwe’rethrilledtoaddittoourglobalrosterofeventsthisyear.Whileour911GT3Rprogramisaprovenone,it’sgreattofinallyputourCayman GT4 Clubsport MR to work, and with a guy like Jeff behind the wheel we knowit’singoodhands.”

Ward, now serving as an instructor/consultant for selected AMA Supercross riders, established himself as a legend in motorcycle racing before making the jump to Indy Lights in 1992. He then became a quick contender in that series as well as the IndyCar Series in the late 1990s.

“It’sfunnythatI jumpedtotheIndyLightswithnofour-wheelracingexperience,”saidWard. “But Iwasable toadaptprettyquickly. Ihope I cando thesamewiththe Porsche in Pirelli World Challenge. I was able to test a day at Willow Springs (Raceway) lastweek and learned about the car. I’mexcited to get to LongBeachagain.”

Ward will compete in the GT4 Invitational class at Long Beach which will be headlined by the fast GT3 sports cars in the GT division set for practice at 3:30 p.m. PDT on Friday (April 13). Qualifying is Saturday at 9:20 a.m. PDT with the 50-minute GT/GT4 Sprint event scheduled for Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Both Qualifying and the Race sessions will be live-streamed at World-Challenge.com/streamvideo.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Defending Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach winner Alvaro Parente continued his impressive street racing performance Sunday in Round 3 of the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix presented by Optima Batteries with another Long Beach GT victory despite a race stoppage on lap ten of the 31-lap contest.

Parente, a six-time winner in 2016 and GT series drivers champion, started on the pole Sunday at the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit near the Long Beach harbor and never looked back to secure his second 2017 PWC GT win in the No. 9 K-RAX Racing McLaren 650S sports car. Alvaro captured Round 1 last month at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Parente, a 32-year-old driver from Porto, Portugal, held off the turn one challenge of local star Patrick Long of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and extended his winning margin at thecheckeredflagto2.86secondsinawildeventthatsawfloodingbetweenturnseightandnineduetoafirehydrantincidentonaLongBeachsidestreet.

The 50-minute sprint event was halted for 15 minutes on lap ten as the PWC Safety Crew cleanedupthefloodedtracksurfaceduetorunningwaterfromthesidestreetmishap.

Parente, who set a track record in qualifying Saturday, also clocked a race lap record with a time of one minute, 19.070 seconds (89.62 miles per hour) easily besting the mark set last year by Michael Cooper at 1:19.638 (88.99 m.p.h.). Parente now leads Long by one point,70toLong’s69,inthe2017PWCGTpointstandings.
