The BFa program is made of nine majors: ceramics, Drawing, Fibre, Glass, Jewellery + metals, media arts + Digital Technologies, Painting, Print media and sculpture.

Students are introduced to a broad

spectrum of traditional and contemporary

media, techniques, subject matter, and

theory that will assist them in developing

a personal definition of drawing as well

as critical and conceptual approaches

to their work. Drawing is a student-centered

program, and whether it involves the pursuit

of traditional drawing or more experimental

approaches, it is the individual student’s

practice that leads the instruction. Students

are challenged and supported with in-depth

critical analysis of their independent studio

research and through this experience

Drawing majors acquire the skills necessary

to pursue professional practices, exhibitions,

residencies, graduate degrees and cultural

employment opportunities. Faculty

members in the Drawing program are

engaged professional artists, supportive

of students in this exciting, rigorous and

community-minded area of study.

The Sculpture major encourages

students to explore the widest range of

sculptural possibilities, from traditional

figure modeling to contemporary

installation and performance art, kinetic

and interactive objects, or constructions

that may employ video, audio or

digital components.

Students explore a broad spectrum

of additive, subtractive and reproductive

methods such as modeling, casting, carving,

welding, woodworking and fabrication.

The sculpture faculty – all practicing,

exhibiting artists – encourage conceptual

and material-based inquiry as students build

an individual practice in the visual arts.

Sculpture Liberal StudiesThe goal of ACAD’s Liberal Studies

program is to support students in becoming

confident art and design practitioners by

helping them to situate their professional

practices within society in an ethical

and responsible manner.

Serious study of art and design, in the context

of contemporary culture and society, requires

familiarity with a broad range of historical,

critical and methodological perspectives.

Creative practice draws on many disciplines

including literature, visual arts and design

histories, anthropology, cultural studies

and professional practices. Liberal Studies’

emphasis on critical discourse and methods

supports student engagement with the

practice of interpretation in a contemporary

context. This knowledge helps students

to understand their own production and

to respond to the work of others. All Liberal

Studies courses include the study and

application of processes of interpretation

and methods of analysis. These essential skills

prepare students to engage effectively

with contemporary culture.

artist lectures…these come up a lot within the school

and are really important to take advantage of.”

1

Leave the world better then you found it.

I think it’s important to have a big idea and just go for it.

Q What do you value

the most about ACAD?

A KW: What I value

most about ACAD is

the community. The

college is alive with

active minds and new

and challenging ideas.

The energy here is

extremely dynamic and

everyone seems excited

about each other’s

work and what will be

created next. Also the

conversations about art

and the world in general

or what some might

call “critical dialogue”

I found to be very

intriguing and inspiring,

if anything helped drive

my work and fuel its

development it was these

conversations with

friends, faculty and the

broader community.

A lF: Some of the

faculty and instructor’s,

really dig deep into

some interesting topics.

It’s those topics a lot of

the time that stimulate

interesting conversations

with other students

afterwards. I’ll also

really miss just being

surrounded by such a

diverse range of artists.

Coming into the studio

everyday and seeing

what everyone is

working on. It’s that

particular sense of

community within the

studios I’ll really miss

a lot.

A Bm: I value the small

supportive community

of students and instruc-

tors. Being able to work

with your instructors

on an individual basis

is really fantastic and

I think that many

students attending

large Universities

don’t often share that

experience because

of the large class sizes.

At ACAD there is

a network of people

that are supportive,

encouraging and under-

stand why you make art,

that is what I will miss

most when I graduate.

“There really is a great creative community in Calgary and ACAD plays a large role in that.” BM

“We first worked together in a third year typography

class and the rest is history. Since then we’ve

worked on a number of projects together and our

individual design styles really complement each

other, bringing out the best in both of us. Through

this, we’ve come to realize the importance of

collaboration and count ourselves lucky to have

found someone with whom we work so well.”

Q What advice would

you offer to someone

considering an art

school education?

A The most surprising

thing about art school

is that it doesn’t feel like

school. Yes, you work

very hard, often late

into the night, but you

do it because you love

it. You’ll never have to

be in a gymnasium full

of hundreds of rows

of desks taking a math

test, instead, you have

the opportunity to

really learn from and

enjoy your experiences.

Q How would you

describe your work

to someone who

doesn’t know much

about design?

A Our work aims

to communicate and

clarify, we strive to

challenge conventions

and redefine the way

people view their every

day. We don’t simply

create beautiful

magazines or posters

but take the medium

and turn it into

an experience.

Q How do you see

your work developing

in the future?

A We never stop

evolving as designers.

Everything we do

contributes to this

creative growth. As

such, it is impossible

to know where we will

be creatively, years

down the line, but we’re

excited to find out.

There is support for

Q What advice would

Q How did you choose

A I have always loved

art and though I tried

in university to look

at different paths, it

was art that held my

interest and fed my

curiosity and creative

nature. I love that art

can intersect so may

other interests, such as

With undergraduate degrees in Genetics and

the California Institute of the Arts in 2000. Over the

last 11 years I have taught undergraduate and

graduate students at the University of California,

San Diego, The University of British Columbia and

now enjoy teaching at ACAD. My artwork is not easily

put into a single category, the medium is usually

chosen after the basic idea is formed. Process,

experiment, play, evolution, refinement – these all

reflect the development of my work. Sometimes

my practice exposes relatively unknown technology,

sometimes it creates a space for individual reflection

on some issue, sometimes I directly engage with

individuals and invite meaningful exchanges.

His hand-woven cloth has been exhibited in Canada,

China, Japan, Korea, and the United States. He has

written for several Canadian publications including

Artichoke Magazine, Craft, and Perception and

A The enthusiasm of

– when a project comes

together, when a skill

is mastered, when

a work is understood

the individual with the

Dave and Jenn have made a career of

collaborating through different processes.

Being a painter isn’t just about painting.

Go to the Sketch Book, page 17.

Q Why did you choose

to go to ACAD?

A The fact that we

could major in painting

while messing around

with weaving, glass

blowing and audio was

too tempting for our

restless minds. We’re

obsessive problem

solvers and we wanted

to be challenged. Being

able to explore such

a variety of mediums

gave us a taste of what

we could do and helped

form our practice into

what it is today.

Q What advice

or information would

you offer to someone

considering an art

school education?

A A lot can change and

happen in a few years.

You really can learn an

amazing amount. You

just need to be open to

it. We both went sepa-

rately into art school

having fuzzy, vague

ideas of what we might

do with our lives when

we finished. But by the

time we graduated we

found ourselves not

only fused together

but knowing what we

wanted and focused

on building up our

art practice. We also

discovered that working

twelve hours a day is

awesome if you love

what you do.

Meet DaveandJenn, 2006 Graduates

After receiving their Fine Art Diplomas from

Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Jennifer Saleik/

David Foy arrived at ACAD to finish their degrees.

They formed DaveandJenn in 2004 while they were

in their fourth year at the college and have up kept

an unhealthy amount of unity ever since. They’ve

exhibited their work in public and commercial

galleries, art fairs and special project spaces across

Canada and abroad. They’ve been shortlisted

for the RBC’s Canadian Painting Competition twice

(2006 and 2009), received the Lieutenant Governor

of Alberta Biennial Emerging Artist Award in 2010

and made the Sobey Art Award long list in 2011.

ALBERTA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN

Meet Tim, 1989 GraduateMeet Tammy, 1998 Graduate

Born in London, England, Tim holds a Cultural Studies

degree from Trent University and an ACAD diploma

in Sculpture/Printmaking. His work in a range of

media has been shown in artist-run and public galleries

across Canada since 1983. He has been creative

head of Zero G art + design since 1986. From 1991

to 1996 Tim worked in the Media and Visual Arts

departments at the Banff Centre for the Arts,

culminating in the position of Assistant Curator at

the Walter Phillips Gallery. Since 2008 he has been

Programming Director of The New Gallery (TNG),

Calgary’s original artist-run centre.

Q What was the most

unexpected aspect

of art school?

A The sheer scope of

practical experiences

available here was quite

unanticipated. I feel so

fortunate to have had

an opportunity to learn

to blow glass and do

hand-drawn animation;

consequently I feel that

I graduated with both a

practical understanding

of and well-informed

appreciation for some

of the arts that I hadn’t

previously given too

much thought to.

Q What makes

ACAD unique?

A Although the College

has changed in several

ways since I graduated

in 1989, the strongly

studio-centered

education ACAD offers

its students has not.

Q What advice would

you offer to someone

considering an art

school education?

A When I started

at ACAD I had no idea

how important getting

involved in the

art community was

going to be. For many

students the most

important career move

they can make is to

volunteer at galleries

or artist-run-centres

so that they learn how

the art world works.

The facilities and faculty

at ACAD are world-class,

and the opportunities for

artistic exploration have

been expanded every

year. I also believe that

the College’s symbiotic

relationship with the local

visual and media arts

communities in Calgary

provides ACAD students

lots of opportunities to

get involved themselves

in one of the most vibrant

and dynamic cultural

ecosystems in Canada.

If you are already

involved in the ACAD

and Calgary art

community when you

graduate half the battle

of creating a strong art

career is already won.

Q What makes

ACAD the best choice

for students?

A As a student

you decide what kind

of art career you want

to pursue – ACAD has

all of the people and

resources to help make

this happen as long

as you are willing

to do the work.

As a student at ACAD, you’ll have a

chance to exhibit your work from your

first day of study. With eight different

student run independent exhibition

spaces including the In Cahoots Gallery,

the Warehouse Closet Gallery, the Poly

students have an opportunity to share

their work and to begin their practice as

professional artists and designers from

their first day of classes.

Our campus is also home to two

professional gallery spaces – the Marion

Nicoll Gallery, and the Illingworth Kerr

Gallery. The student-run Marion Nicoll

Gallery (MNG) showcases only student

work, and is curated and managed each

year by ACAD students. This professional

gallery space has been home to the first

exhibitions by some of Canada’s most

exciting artists, and opening receptions
