Synopsis:■ My idea is a Thriller/Mystery based short film called ‘The Text & Note’. This idea is quite

supernatural/suspenseful as well as being physiological. The story begins with a girl who lives alone with her parents. One evening her parents went out in the late evening as the girl was studying and they wanted to meet up with their family friends

■ At this point the girl receives a text message from her mum saying ‘We won’t be back tonight, see you tomorrow morning XX’. She then assumes that they are staying the night at their family friend’s house. She then carries on with her studies, she begins to get stressed (heartbeat sound effect in the background) at her work and starts tapping her pen on her notebook – then all of a sudden she closes her book suddenly (these are the stereotypical actions which happen when you are stressed about revision or work in general)

■ After she closes the notebook she can hear the sound of a ticking clock in the background. After a few minutes, she gets a call from a number called ‘Unknown’. She presses decline after that she begins to receive endless amounts of text messages, some of which say: ‘Your all alone’, ‘I’m coming’, ‘Lock your doors because you know I’m coming’ – This all seemed very strange to her as how did this person even know she was alone?

■ The girl runs to her door checking that it’s locked just in case as she wondered that this person maybe tricking her. Then the front door rings she receives another message: ‘I’m here now let me in or I’ll let myself in…’

■ She reaches for the door handle where a note was found on her porch, she then leaves her phone on the floor (the note says saying: ‘I knew you would let me in’,) she then turns around and sees a figure who grabs and places their hand over her mouth (they are wearing a black glove). As this happens she receives a message on her phone which was left on the floor by the front door with one last text - ‘I knew you were alone that’s why I came for you, only you, I hope you can understand why I came for you’

■ It will then end on the phone being in focus then the camera will make it out of focus then finishing with the phone message being out of focus

■ It will end with a ‘cliff-hanger’ – a common technique used when composing the story line

FROM IDEA TO FINAL PRODUCT PRE – PRODUCTION:This Pre-Production pack/portfolio includes all the information needed for the preparation of my Pre-Production for the final major project of the year. However, before I even begin the production and filming process of my project I need to collect everything together in one document so that I am totally in control of my project, this process is also called pre-production. I have previously been getting my idea into shape by completing my ‘Proposal Pitch’, ‘Production Board’ and completing Chapters one to four. The content in this pack will totally depend on the medium I have specifically chosen for my final major project. For mine it is a short Suspense Thriller film which will include many of the same elements as other previous projects as it is a short film again. Some of the elements of this pack and the content will include some of these below:

An overall budget Health and Safety/Risk Assessment Location Recce with risk assessment A schedule for the whole production Call Sheet - A list of contributors with telephone numbers and addresses A crew list A post production schedule Technical requirements Copyrighted material sorted out Permissions signed A storyboard for fictional based project List of props

Won’t include: Script (fictional story) A storyboard for visual sequences (factual based project) Outline script for pieces to camera and intended voice over (factual project)

Health and Safety / Risk Assessment:This document will be presenting the Health and Safety risk assessment which is very important for any production due to the fact that we need to make sure that the whole production is safe to carry out. Ensuring that all members of the crew are able to proceed with the project and that it is safe enough for them to take part in. I have carried out a risk assessment below in a table which demonstrates the risks and hazards which are in my particular location for my final major project. I am filming in my house and already know the hazards which could possibly be a risk to everyone involved but the assessment shows what actions should be taken if it does happen as we all need to be aware.

A risk assessment usually contains the following information:

Activity taking place/location Hazard name The risks People at risk Controls and actions which can be put in place to prevent the risk Level of risk – High, Medium or Low The purpose of the Health and Safety assessment is to ensure that the activities such as filming,

sound record, measuring the lighting are carried out safely.

The table below shows all the risks in my specific location inside of my house which is an average looking hallway to my front door entrance. The aspects which I have clearly considered include:

Slips trips and falls Electricity Safety Fire Prevention Safer use of display screen equipment

Storyboard for my Final major project – ‘The Text & Note’:

Storyboards are a way to visualize how your shots hope to look like before you go out and film during the production process. Storyboarding is a way of telling your film story visually. For each picture where there is a square on the storyboard this is where you should include a small snippet of what should happen or take place for each shot. It essentially tells your film in small images or pictures which you have either taken yourself in reality or have drawn them into the box. The importance of a storyboard is to see how each scene or sequence is to be filmed and edited to make your story effective on the screen. Some of the key elements which a storyboard should include are the position of the people in each shot, the shot size (‘Extreme Close up’ etc.), any important background elements which is essential for the scene and lastly the important action to take a close closer look at. Factual programs can also benefit from a storyboard, first to show how the factual story will be presented on screen and secondly to show how key sequences will be shot. Here are examples of the two different ways you can do your storyboard:

Example 1

Example 2:

Here are my storyboards for my production – ‘The Text & Note’ :

Altogether I have sixteen shots which will have:

All of my shots and film will be filmed in the ‘Daylight’ White Balance setting as I believe it gives a lighter more effective look to the film as well as post editing the colours during the editing process to warm/red tones:

Factual Program Production

A factual program production is a visual outline of the scene or whole storyline which clearly presents what I imagine in my mind what the whole story or scene should hope to look like. The option out of drawing it or listing each shot is to list each shot as I personally believe that I can detail more by doing this whereas by drawing it, I have technically done this for my storyboard as this shows what I hope each visual to look like in pictures

Shot list:1. Opening shot: an ‘Establishing shot’ of the house location from the side panning across

the room as well as the subject who is sitting on the sofa2. ‘Close up’ of phone which details what hopes to happen in the next upcoming shot

(‘Dutch Angle’)3. Then the camera turns to the main subject which is the person, ‘Midshot’ of the girl

reading the text and seeing her phone – the camera will look straight on the subject rather than at a ‘High or Low angle’

4. ‘Medium Long shot’ presenting a ‘Close shot’ of the girl character 5. Camera will be positioned behind the subject who is sitting on the sofa – so you will see

the back of their head, the TV and where they are sitting (straight on angle)6. This shot is of the notepad and the girl tapping her pen on it – the camera will be

positioned from above looking down on the paper, so the audience can see the character’s actions

7. The overlooking from above continues from the camera man’s perspective from the previous shot

8. This time the camera is positioned lower and will just about level up with the surface of the screen of the phone on the table

9. ‘High angle’ of the phone – audience can see the whole picture from above10. This then continues 11. Shot eleven visuals are a ‘Close up’ of the door handle which the girl is holding tensely,

the camera will be positioned looking over her shoulder as a tilt angle12. A few ‘Extreme Close up’ shots13. ‘Long shot’ – ‘Establishing shot’ at almost the end of my film which shows where the

story will hope to finish14. ‘Close up’ – camera will tilt showing ‘Camera Movement and Direction’ for the audience15. Another ‘Close up’ which is very similar to shot fourteen16. And again, another ‘Close up’ like previously

Shooting Script The shooting script is very similar to the storyboard however it is more detailed and is more elaborate and precise. It is an overwritten version of the script for the movie. The Director along with the Videographer writes the shooting script usually while discussing their ideas and shot ideas which they hope to desire and use for their movie. In broad terms, the main difference between the script and the shooting script is that the script is a selling tool, whereas the shooting script is a production tool.

The shooting script is normally broken into scenes and shots, based on location, featuring precise cinematography terminology such as ‘Close up’, ‘Medium shot’, ‘Tracking shot’ etc. The idea here is to inform the crew what is going on in each location. Before filming starts, the shooting script will be divided into dates, so everyone knows what is being shot when and of course when. The shooting script varies from one production to another, it is almost like a recipe.

Treatment:This document is called ‘the treatment’, some of the key elements of ‘the treatment’ include a detailed description of my project. My project contains specific elements some of these include,‘characters’,‘location’,‘storyline’,‘shots’. A treatment mainly consists of a more detailed version of the story as a whole. My film is mainly in the form of a short Suspense Thriller format as personally for my final projects I haven’t explored into this genre yet so wanted to for this final project of the year. My project is called ‘The Text and Note’, the reason being because the character discovers two main findings firstly being ‘the text’ and ‘the note’. Both of these are revealed in the story as the film develops but I wanted to keep the name simple as people will remember it more easily as the name is really basic but also effective. As a new audience member, you would read the title as something unusual because you would think that the story is about a piece of paper and a text message however what they don’t know is the inside of the story and what necessarily happens within it with the Thriller aspects. This is what you find out when you watch it. My overall area of concern is to demonstrate how intimidating phone messages can be, and how easy it is to become terrified in your own home. One element in the production is to capture the audience’s attention as this will make them sense the character’s fears and emotions. I hope to capture their imagination by using a cliff-hanger at the end.

My main project is about a girl who is currently home alone in the storyline but does have parents as this is shown by the girl character receiving a text message from her mum as in my storyline the parents leave the girl home alone as they go out to stay round their family friend’s house. When this girl is home alone she begins to start studying as she is a hard worker who is keen to be successful in her education life and shows that she gets stressed in my film by doing the stereotypical things which are tapping her pen on her book, placing her hands on her hand (showing that she has a headache). She receives a call from a number called ‘Unknown’, she then presses decline as she instantly thinks that it’s someone tricking or pranking her. After a few moments she starts receiving text messages from the same person repeatedly which state, ‘You’re all alone, I’m coming’, ‘Lock your door, because you know I’m coming’ etc. The character does feel quite anxious, scared and worried at this point this is why she runs to her door checking that it is securely locked. She then receives a new message saying that ‘I’m here now, let me in’ as this happens the doorbell rings. She opens the door and discovers a note placed on the floor reading, ‘I knew you would let me in’. At this point the tension builds up with the series of events happening at this current point. As the note is read she turns around finding the unknown character holding her mouth and receiving her phone which was left on the floor as she picked up the note. Another message comes through reading, ‘I knew you were alone that’s why I came for you, only you’. The girl character does feel very confused and trapped inside her house throughout the story as if she went out she knew she probably wouldn’t go back as she knows what the risks are. What we don’t know as the audience is why this unknown knew the girl was alone in her house or why they came for her. This is why the story is left on a cliff-hanger to make the audience ask questions which can’t be answered unless the story is completed perhaps in a second part.

The girl character feels quite trapped overall, her parents expect a lot from her and expect her to do well with her education. From her perspective she would probably feel scared and anxious whenever someone rings the doorbell when she is home alone however she will overcome this as this is the little of things for her to worry about. Whereas with the unknown character they aren’t revealed a lot as the build-up of suspense allows the audience to get a feel of what is coming up for not just themselves but what the girl character has to face alone. This character is firstly introduced using

social media/networking. This is what I hope my audience to pick up and be more educated about the use of social networking, don’t always think and go with the flow of it as it can potentially be dangerous and worrying for the individual experiencing it. The character mainly communicates with this girl through social networking but first physically introduced in the last shot which is a cliff hanger. The reason why this is done is to leave the audience hanging with the character appearance and personality.

My target audience has been clearly written in previous pieces of work in my portfolio for this trimester but to remind ourselves, the target audience of my final major project is mainly targeted to people who enjoy feeling on edge and like being in the situation of a cliff hanger scenario within a film. I believe that to target the audience towards peoples’ interests are more specific rather than targeting my film to an age group.

Throughout my whole story and filming process I have mainly decided to include as many different techniques which I have learnt and picked up from trimester one to trimester three as I believe it is vital to demonstrate as many as you can to show that you understand each one, I have included most shot types, camera movement, being able to use each piece of equipment, use of ‘Colour Correction’, ‘White Balance’, ‘Camera angles’ to show different perspectives for the story, ‘Stereotypes’, ‘Representation’, ‘Semiology’ and other ones. Each shot type will represent something different for the character and the audience as some shots will make the audience feel more included.

Lastly, the location was something which I wanted to seriously consider. For the last two projects I had experienced filming out of my comfort zone which was in the College and outside in the ‘Dane John gardens’ in Canterbury. This time for this last project of the year I wanted to film something in my home as I wanted to see what it would be like filming in my own environment which would be intriguing to find out for myself. There is lots of room in my house but the main part which I am filming is in the main hallway downstairs (entrance to front door of my house) as well as filming a few shots of the kitchen lounging area which is very close to my front door. The genre of my film is a Suspense Thriller which is something I have never done before but to clearly show that it is a Suspense Thriller, different elements are used such as the angles, White Balance (filming it in the ‘Daylight’ setting), shot types and main storyline. When it comes to Post Production which is the process after filming I will be using ‘Colour Correction’ to add colour tone to create a dark eary atmosphere as well as sound effects, ‘Foley sounds’ which I will be producing myself on a zoom recorder/shotgun microphone and lastly background music which will be eary or tense to create tension for the viewers.

Overall, I hope to include all of the elements which I have clearly stated above to the best standard which I can using all the knowledge which I have picked up from all three trimesters as I believe it is vital to show my understanding and skills to their best ability. I hope my film turns out the way I visualize it to be in my shooting script/storyboard in production as well as editing it during post production which comes later during the whole production process.

Production FormsProduction forms include:

Contributors’ release form Location permission agreement

Contributor’s release form is the most useful one. All contributors who appear in your production should sign release form. The purpose of release form is to prevent any sort of misunderstanding over your production giving you legal permission to film and later showcase in public your project.

The only time when you do not require people to sign release form is when filming in public places. This applies only to non – speaking members of the public who are filmed in public places going about their rightful business. Public places means streets and roads and shopping areas, and other areas owned by community.

Location agreement form;

Use the form for any location. Always get permission unless you are filming in the street or public places. Tell people you are filming and for how long and in what particular location. You will certainly need permission to film in a historical settings (Canterbury Cathedral etc.) You will also need permission if filming on private property.

Filming in public places does not require permission for filming but…

It is good idea to inform the local police if you are staging something unusual. They can often be very helpful. Police will also need to be informed if you are filming at derelict locations. Use common sense when planning your production.

Insurance:

If you filming on any premises other than your own, you will need to take out Third Party Public Liability Insurance. Educational institutions such as Canterbury College must obtain Third Party Public Liability Insurance and will provide you with a copy if you need one.

It insurers you and the production against liability, loss, claim or proceeding arising from the law relating to the production in response of personal injury, loss or damage to anyone’s property etc.
