Nurturing hope through education, health care and business development in Ethiopia. How Partnership Ethiopia Began . . . In 1971, Gayle Bogenschneider – newly graduated from nursing school – arrived in the district of Selekleka, in northern Ethiopia as a volunteer. The community compound where she worked included a health clinic, elementary school, literacy outreach program, trade school and agriculture program. A few years after Gayle returned to the States, Ethiopia became a communist-ruled country; during the next 20 years the health care and educational infrastructure was dismantled, and the country experienced unprecedented drought and famine. Gayle lost contact with the young students she had mentored. In summer 2013, Gayle revisited Selekleka and reunited with a number of her former students. They have gone on to become doctors, business people, teachers and Ethiopian government professionals. All of them told Gayle the same thing: their access to education and medical care as youths had made their present lives possible. Today, the compound where Gayle volunteered 40 years ago is owned by the Ethiopian government. Order has been restored and infrastructure is being rebuilt, with education and medical care as top priorities. Aksum University has been given jurisdiction to redevelop the programs that once flourished in Selekleka. Partnership Ethiopia, Inc. – a joint effort of concerned Ethiopians and Americans – exists to help bring education, medical care and opportunity to the people of northern Ethiopia. Partnership Ethiopia – Nurturing Hope Through Medical EducationToday in northern Ethiopia fewer than 10 percent of mothers have access to prenatal, neonatal and maternal childbirth care.*

The community has limited access to emergency health services and thousands in the region suffer from preventable communicable diseases, due to inadequate access to medical care.

Ethiopia needs qualified clinicians to staff hospitals and community clinics. Aksum University has established a Health Sciences Program to train a new generation of physicians, nurses, and midwives. But the program currently lacks enough physician-educators to teach this new generation.

Partnership Ethiopia’s Guest Medical Faculty Program was established to meet this need.

Partnership Ethiopia Guest Medical Faculty ProgramThis program recruits, sponsors and sends volunteer physicians and Allied Health Professionals from the United States to Aksum University School of Medicine for 2 weeks to one month, to provide teaching opportunities to Ethiopian healthcare professionals, by enhancing the medical education curriculum through lectures, clinical case presentations, small group didactics, clinical laboratory demonstrations, participation in clinical rounds and demonstration of medical/surgical techniques, procedures and skills.

U.S. physicians, drawing on their expertise, will provide practical clinical knowledge and medical training to Ethiopia’s healthcare professionals, such that they will be able to bring these skills directly to the community at large. In exchange, Ethiopian healthcare professionals, will offer insights, experiences, skills and knowledge to the US physicians concerning common regional illnesses, local medical practices and cultural issues impacting medicine in the local communities in Ethiopia.

Guest Medical Faculty Volunteer Requirements:Proficiency and expertise in one’s chosen field of medicine;

Experience or ability to share medical knowledge with others;

Ability to commit to 10 to 30 days;

Completion and acceptance of the Volunteer Application;

Successful interview with Partnership Ethiopia Founder and Clinical Director.

Partnership Ethiopia provides Guest Faculty volunteers with:

Airfare and flight arrangements

Arrangements for necessary inoculations

Housing while in Ethiopia

Pay and assist with Visa

Transportation to Aksum University in Ethiopia

Navigator/Coordinator for your trip

Packing list of all personal items and suggested materials
