“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.”

—Luther Burbank

With over 8,000 plant species identified in Guatemala, you’re going to see a few flowers around the country. This month our photo contest theme is “Flowers of Guatemala” and as you flip through the photographs on these pages, you will see a great cross-section of representatives. A

special thanks to all of the photographers who submitted so many beautiful images.

From May 28 through 30, representatives from environmental organizations and institutions of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean will meet in La Antigua to participate in the IUCN (Interna-tional Union for Conservation of Nature) Regional Conservation Forum for Mesoamerica and the Caribbe-an. Created in 1948, IUCN is the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network. It works with its members and partners on a portfolio of conservation projects to halt and reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve human well-being.

In our feature article this month we hear from Dr. Grethel Aguilar, the Regional Director on some of the topics that will be covered in this important forum.

Mother’s Day in Guatemala is celebrated on May 10, often beginning with loud music and fireworks. But the intention is the same as it is internationally, giving thanks to the moms who do so much every day to make our world a better place.

Prize-winning Chef Amalia Moreno-Damgaard recounts some of her memories of Mother’s Days gone by with On Mother’s Day, Sharing is Caring. She also shares a tasty recipe for Pan con Pierna (open-faced sandwich with roasted pork).

Be sure to check out the DateBook upcoming calendar events. We wish all of you a flower-filled May.

Representatives from environ-mental organizations and in-stitutions of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

will meet 28-30 May in La Antigua, Guatemala, to participate in IUCN (In-ternational Union for Conservation of Nature) Regional Conservation Forum for Mesoamerica and the Caribbean.

Created in 1948, IUCN is the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network. It works with its membership and partners on a portfolio of conservation proj-ects to halt and reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve human well-being.

The Regional Forum constitutes a key platform to share knowledge, ideas and solutions about sustainability; an opportu-nity to discuss and debate the most press-ing problems of conservation and human wellbeing in the region.

IUCN’s Regional Director for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, Dr Grethel Aguilar, underscores that “IUCN’s work in Guatemala and the region over the past three decades has been possible thanks to the concerted effort of government agencies, civil society organisations and international cooperation entities, all banking on conserva-tion and sustainable development.”

She states as well, that this regional event, that will bring together some one hundred delegates from more than 20 countries “will constitute an act of cel-ebration and recognition of the joint suc-cesses and results achieved.”

A Knowledge Day will take place as part of the forum, to be held on May 28th at the Spanish Cooperation Train-ing Centre in Antigua, Guatemala. IUCN from its Guatemala Country Office, promotes a number of initiatives that could be known during that day, among which we can highlight the fol-lowing:

In the Laguna Lachuá eco region of Guatemala, more than 830 producers have improved their ecological produc-tion of sourced fine cacao, increasing annual yield per hectare from 70 kg to 238 kg while simultaneously boosting their capacities to place more than 100 metric tonnes a year in the Bean to Bar international cacao market. With advis-ing from IUCN and support from Fun-dación Argidius, producer families thus reap benefits from an economic activity that improves their livelihoods in har-mony with conservation of nature.

To promote conservation and sustainable use of Pacific coast man-groves and contributing to the Na-tional Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy, IUCN with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has promoted capacity building for local mangrove forest users, employing restoration opportunity assessment methodol-ogy (ROAM) to identify economic benefits from the ecological conser-vation of this valuable ecosystem.

With the support of the German Development Bank (KfW), conser-vation and protection of the Selva Maya as a unique corridor of em-blematic protected areas in Guate-mala, Belize and Mexico have been

reinforced by IUCN together with authorities of the protected areas of the three countries, through the strengthening of administrators’ scientific knowledge and technical capacities and the design of a joint regional strategy to conserve and protect these areas.

Mother’s Day in Guatemala and a few other Central American countries is always on May 10 as opposed to dif-ferent days in other countries. It is an

ancient Christian celebration also celebrated by the Greeks and Romans.

Mother’s Day In modern times, this day celebrates all women

who have played the role of a nurturing and good role model for any child despite where they come from whether by natural birth or adoption. Motherhood comes with aches and pains, ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and above all, with unconditional love.

It is this unconditional love that makes for a lasting bond as it requires a loving yet firm hand to have an im-pact (positive or negative) in the life of a child. I am so fortunate to have had a pillar and mentor who made a lifelong impact in my life, my mater-nal grandmother.

Mother’s Day also celebrates grandmothers especially the ones who have been very much present in their grandchildren’s lives. There are some that deserve special recogni-tion, like my grandmother, that have taken the role of mothers when times have demanded it and have been mothers twice.

Hearts, flowers, cakes, jewelry, and cards are tokens to acknowledge the special mom in our lives but per-haps a simpler yet longer lasting way to show affection is giving our special mothers the gift of our time. As we grow older, get married, have kids, have families, and develop our own lives, we distance ourselves from our mothers.

As our mothers age, they encoun-ter new challenges and need our at-tention more than ever. This is our opportunity to give back. It does not

cost a penny, but it is worth a fortune. Sharing our time with them is the greatest gift any mother would ever want on Mother’s Day.

Here is an idea to make your Mother’s Day Celebration even more meaningful and delicious. This recipe is perfect for re-bonding in the kitchen while creating an easy and scrumptious lunch or dinner sand-wich.

¡Feliz Dia de La Madre! Happy Mother’s Day!

I am so fortunate to have had a pillar and mentor who made a lifelong impact in my life.
